Do a search for Insight on the Sacramento craigslist, and there is a salvage title Insight for sale. Yes, 5 speed; 87k miles. Needs some paint on the front end and has a cracked windshield, but you could drive it as is if that didn't bother you. I was sorely tempted but running the numbers have to admit I don't drive enough to justify the switch, or the gamble in buying used, esp as I've had my Scion less than 2 years. Good luck!
I suspect the condition of the engine and batteries is the big unknown....would really like to know the lifetime mpg.
Yes, I doubt engine/battery cond or lifetime mpg is possible to know--sounds like the owner bought it from the insurance company and has only had it a few months. The damage looks to be pretty minor compared to some I've seen that cost similar or even more; and in N. California priced at about half what a clean one would go for--still, with no warranty on the packs due to salvage status, this car was a slightly bigger gamble than my budget allowed. Maybe it's time to start saving for a CR-Z?
