US Q2 2025 Automotive Sales Overview

As expected, U.S. consumers continue to purchase more pickups and SUVs than sedans. Q2 2025 US automotive sales reached 4.19 million vehicles, up 2.2% over the 4.10 million sold during the same period a year ago.

For June, new vehicle seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) declined as the market decreased from the tariff induced prepurchase frenzy in the first quarter. Affordability is in retreat as tariff cost increases begin to reach dealership showrooms. The June SAAR declined 1.7% to 15.3 million, down from May’s 15.6 million but up from 15.0 million a year ago.

GMs Q2 2025 sales topped the industry with a positive 7.3% increase in sales volume over Q2 of 2024. Toyota and Ford experienced increased Q2 2025 sales volumes up 7.2% and 14.2% over Q2 2024 respectively.

To contrast the US Q2 automotive sales uptick, Stellantis’ sales deterioration continues with Q2 volumes down 10.2%, the company’s eight consecutive quarterly decline. Nissan, Subaru, Tesla, Mazda, VW, and Audi also experienced US Q2 2025 sales declines.

US Q2 2025 EV Sales Overview

In June, new EV sales totaled 103,945 units, marking a modest 1.4% decline from May. Despite the dip in volume, market share rose to 8%, up from 6.9% the previous month.

As the EV market enters the second half of 2025, Q2 sales rose 4.9% over Q1, and total EV sales for the first half of the year hit a record 607,089, up 1.5% YTD. With the federal EV tax credit under the Inflation Reduction Act set to expire at the end of September, the next few months are likely to bring a wave of compelling EV offers, creating a critical window for consumers to act. Once gone, the segment is in thin air or on thin ice to stand on their own.

    Q2 2025 EV sales of 310,839 were lower by 6.3% vs 331,853 sold during Q2 of 2024. EV sales through H1 of 2025 set a record at 607,089, up 1.5% over H1 of 2024.

Q2 2025 US Auto Sales Market Share

During the second quarter, Ford shined. This OEMs share was a stunner as it was up 1.5% in just one year! GM and Toyota achieved noteworthy 0.8 and .7% share increases respectively.

On the downside, Stellantis once again took the largest hit with a market share falloff of 1.0%. I am not expecting an improvement any time soon.

The tariffs are not going away while the Fed Tax Credits on PHEV/EVs are so expect higher prices on every new automobile if you are in the market.

I don't care what they want to call it, the Cadillac Lyriq is an electric station wagon, and I like it !

And I already know how good a RAV4 Hybrid is. Can't imagine why anyone would just buy the ICE version.
Now they have no choice ! What a huge home run for mighty Yota !

Exactly right. The 2026 will be HEV/PHEV only. And they will build them in Georgetown, KY. Interesting - and probably related - point is that Kentucky discontinued the $60 a year registration charge for hybrid vehicles. The PHEV/EV surcharge goes from 160 to 165, though. I suspect Toyota had something to do with it because the Camry, RAV4, and related Lexus hybrids are built in Georgetown and there was probably a phone call made to Frankfort to tell them the hybrid penalty has to go. Now that Camry and the upcoming RAV4 are hybrid only, the surcharge would penalize Toyota customers who cannot choose the gas version to lower the annual registration cost.

And I'm reading that the upcoming - probably 2027 - reimagined Hyundai Tucson is also going to be HEV/PHEV only. It's too early to confirm this for North America, but it will be the case in the home market. Seeing Hyundai hybrid models selling better and better over time in the US and Canada, and seeing the Metaplant down in Savannah already tooled up to build electrified models, it's a pretty fair bet that the next Tucson will be hybrid only.
