US Q1 2025 Automotive Sales Overview

U.S. consumers continue to purchase more pickups and SUVs than sedans. Who really offers high volume sedans outside of Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, and Tesla anyway? US Q1 sales volumes were helped in part by the threat of President Donald Trump's tariffs on auto imports, which he implemented via Executive Order on March 26th and collection which began on April 3rd. A 25% tariff was applied to all imported passenger vehicles and key automobile parts – engines, transmissions, electronic components, etc. This came after he placed a 25% tariff on imported Steel and Aluminum on Feb. 11th. Both will and in some cases, already are causing extreme pricing pressure on US and non-US OEM manufacturers MSRPs to the consumer.

With that backdrop, in late March, US dealership traffic rose dramatically as consumers proactively purchased vehicles before the levies pushed wholesale and retail prices higher. I personally purchased an iPhone 16 Pro for my wife to possibly avoid massive tariffs imposed on all imports from China - Up to 80% of Apple's iPhones intended for US sale are manufactured in that country. I digress... This sales front-loading activity helped US Q1 auto sales which “may” prove to slow as we wait for Q2 2025 auto sales results a few months from now.

Q1 2025 US automotive sales reached 3.91 million vehicles, up 5.7% over the 3.70 million sold during the same period a year ago.

GMs Q1 2025 sales topped the industry with an excellent 16.7% increase in volume, the highest of the majors. Subaru and Mazda set March monthly sales record, their 32nd and 11th straight gains respectively.

To contrast the US Q1 automotive sales good news, Stellantis’ sales deterioration continued with Q1 volumes down 11.8%, the company’s seventh consecutive quarterly decline. Tesla and Mercedes also experienced US Q1 2025 sales declines of 8.6 and 9.2 percent respectively.

US Q1 2025 EV Sales Overview

Regarding US EV sales, nearly 300,000 were sold in the US during Q1 of 2025, an increase of 10.6% year over year according to the KBB Q1 2025, EV Sales Report. In terms of market share, 7.5% of total new-vehicle sales in the first quarter were electric vehicles, an increase from 7% a year earlier.

Like the overall automobile market, consumer EV purchases may have also been pulled ahead but for a different reason than outright tariffs. With Trump having threatened to remove the $7,500 Federal tax credit, purchasers may have bought an EV ahead of any change in the tax credit.

Tesla’s sales peaked in the U.S. in February and Q1 of 2023 with 60,325 and 173,000 Tesla EVs sold respectively. The company's sales have not crossed those volume levels in any month or quarter since. At that point in time, its share of the total U.S. auto market hit a high of 4.3%. In Q1 of 2025, Tesla fell back to earth with sales of 128,000, down 25.5% from the 2023 peak and off 8.6% from the number sold in Q1 of 2024. Tesla’s market share came in at just 3.3% of the US Automobile market and 43.5% in the EV space in the quarter.

GM is targeting to be the #2 seller of EVs in the U.S. and given the bang up Q1 sales results with 31,887 sold, up 94% over Q1 of 2024, I have no reason to doubt that prognostication…

Top 10 US Q1 2025 EV OEM Sales Ranks and Volumes

Q1 2025 US Auto Sales Market Share

During the first quarter, consider GM. This OEMs share was a stunner as it was up 1.8% in just one year! When have we ever seen a domestic automaker achieve a 1% increase let alone a 1.8% increase over the course of a year? Honda achieved a nice 0.8% share increase.

On the downside, Stellantis took the largest hit with a market share falloff of 1.5%. I am not expecting an improvement any time soon. Ford and Toyota lost 0.8% and 0.7% share respectively. Both eyeopeners as well.

From the 2024 US Auto Sales Overview and Results story, I wrote:
Adding to that expected hit, the tariffs of 25% on autos and related component parts that make up their manufacture are going to hit the US consumer even harder with massive retail price increases unless they are backed down soon. “If” the tariffs stay, I have a hard time believing the US Automobile sales will reach even 15 million vehicles in 2025.

Are people just now beginning to see that the Model 3 is handsome, and the Model Y is butt-ugly ?

I agree although the 2025 refresh is a lot less "Pregnant Guppy" looking from the profile and rear than the 2024. ;)

    Hi Ed:

Upfront, Tesla has improved the Ys design, but it was a very conservative update with the thin light bar. It looks more like a minor refresh than a completely new redesigned model which is proving out to be the case from those that own them. Exterior and interior fit and finish has "supposedly" been improved as well.

    Hi All:

California having the 5th largest economy in the world all by itself has its own brand of auto sales. With fuel prices approximately 33% higher than the national averages, its citizenry choose a different path when it comes to their daily drivers. Meaning far fewer pickups and SUVs and a lot more sedans. And many of those sedans are electric or hybrid.

    2025 Tesla Model Y

A lone Model Y on a California Highway to Hell.

The California market got off to a strong start in Q1 with the state’s new light vehicle registrations, up 8.3% vs Q1 of 2024. This result was better than the overall US market sales that were up 5.7%. Pent-up-demand, combined with

improvements in affordability were expected to propel the market in 2025 but like most business forecasts, they went out the window when Trump began ramping up the tariffs. The sales results above may have in fact been pulled forward as many consumers were trying to complete purchases prior to the tariffs going into effect.

Current forecasts are for the state’s new vehicle registrations to fall to 1.71 million units for 2025, a 2.3 percent decline from 2024. Due to the fluid nature of current trade policy, that projection is subject to change.

    Tesla loses ground

Tesla registrations fell 15.1% in Q1 vs a year earlier, while registrations for all other ZEVs increased by 35 percent. Tesla’s share of the state electric vehicle market fell from 55.5% in 1Q ‘24 to 43.9 percent in Q1 of 2025. Like the rest of the country, an aging product lineup and backlash against Elon Musk’s political activities were attributed to the decline in Tesla BEV market share.

Despite those headwinds, Tesla’s Model Y was still the state’s top seller.

ZEV market share declined slightly in Q1 of 2025 at 20.8%, down from 21.3% in Q1 of 2024.
