Even with the CT added to the 2024 lineup, volumes are heading south in one hell of a hurry. Wayne Gerdes – CleanMPG – Jan. 3, 2025 2025 Tesla Model Y The redesign improves the platforms appearance but the underpinnings do not revolutionize it. The 2025 Tesla Model Y has finally been redesigned with some decent specs as described below. 327 mi Range 4.1 sec from 0-60 mph 76 cu. ft. of cargo w/ power folding rear seats – suspect as passenger and cargo volumes have been grossly exaggerated by Tesla in the past 6.6” ground clearance 15.4" Center Touchscreen 8" Rear Touchscreen 4,396 lb. curb weight 250 kW peak charge rate 4 years or 50,000 mi, base warranty 8 years or 120,000 mi powertrain and battery warranty The exterior is completely redesigned plus an updated suspension and quieter wheels and tires. Tesla has fallen to #10 just behind Subaru while Mazda leapt two places to #11 placing both VW and Mercedes in its rear view. VW also jumped up two spots to #12, now ahead of both Mercedes and BMW. 2025 Toyota RAV4 PHEV A name change from "Prime" with the next gen set for a 2026 MY release. Tesla’s Model Y fell two places from #4 to #6 as the RAV4 and CRV passed it in 2024. As expected, Honda’s award winning compact Civic moved into the #10 spot with the value-oriented Corolla falling short of this year’s list by just over 9,000 vehicle sales. 2025 Ford Mustang Mach-E Ford's EVs had a good 2024 in terms of sales although the pair are still losing $s per vehicle sold. And onto the EV sales finish... Top 10 2024 US EV Model Sales Tesla Model Y - 372,613 vehicles sold during 2024, down 6.6% below the 398,782 sold in all of 2023 Tesla Model 3 - 189,903 vehicles sold during 2024, down 17.4% below the 230,015 sold in all of 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E - 51,745 vehicles sold during 2024, up 26.9% over the 40,771 sold in all of 2023 Hyundai Ioniq5 - 44,400 vehicles sold during 2024, up 30.9% over the 33,918 sold in all of 2023 Tesla Cybertruck - 38,965 vehicles sold during 2024 vs 0 sold in 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning - 33,510 vehicles sold during 2024, up 38.7% over the 24,165 sold in all of 2023 Honda Prologue - 33,017 vehicles sold during 2024 vs 0 sold in 2023 Chevrolet Equinox - 28,874 vehicles sold during 2024, up 6163% over the 461 sold in all of 2023 Cadillac Lyriq - 28,402 vehicles sold during 2024, up 210.3% above the 9,154 sold in 2023 Rivian R1S - 26,934 vehicles sold during 2024, up 23.4% over the 21,831 sold in all of 2023 2025 Tesla Model Y A new year and finally a refreshed design may help slow the sales slide? Through all of 2024, Stellantis took the largest hit with not just the sales decline but in lockstep, the market share falloff of 1.6% shows how poorly it performed last year. Mazda's 0.4% and GMs 0.3% increase were well deserved. With 20 years’ worth of US Automotive sales data to rely upon, 2024's US Automotive Sales of 15.92 million units increased by 2.5% over the 15.53 million sold in 2023. That total was the highest achieved since Covid decimated the global economy back in 2020. The 2024 US sales totals were unfortunately nowhere near the 17 million plus unit peaks in 2005 and 2015 - 2019. Estimates to reach 16.5 million in 2024 are to me a bit optimistic as Government downsizing – Government employment disappearing, is going to be a noticeable drag on consumer spending and the second largest purchase decision most make is not going to be immune. Hi All: Throughout January, the most spoken of brand continued to lose ground as CEO Elon Musk joined forces with the new Republican Trump Administration to slash and burn all Government spending in favor of holding onto tax cuts for the wealthiest individuals. US -- In January, Tesla sales were off 24% despite all new electric vehicle sales volume reaching 102,243 units, up 29.9% year over year. January marked the tenth consecutive month with over 100,000 units sold. Following a record month in December, when U.S. EV sales reached the highest level ever, a month-over-month sales decline was expected. The top five selling models, ranked by sales volume, were the Tesla Model Y, Model 3, Volkswagen ID.4, Tesla Cybertruck, and Honda Prologue, together making up 54% of total EV sales for the month. Volkswagen ID.4 had a comeback month, with sales up 653% to reach 4,979 units. EU -- In January, EV sales were up 37.3% but Tesla sales fell 45.2% in the EU. Overall sales of all drivetrain types were down 2.6% across Europe in January. While the Tesla sales declines are mostly related to Musk's political and personal activity, I find the exterior build quality appalling and wonder how the cars left the factory in the condition I see them on the road each and every day? Just a random sample of Tesla's build quality from vehicles I have parked next to over the past month. Wayne
Hi All: Tesla's Declining Global Market Share Slide Continues During Tesla's Q3, 2024 shareholder meeting, Elon Musk indicated that Tesla sales could grow 20 to 30% in 2025 which would have correlated to deliveries between 2.15 million and 2.33 million, but his recent political activities have called into question those eye-popping prognostications and creating a marketing mess for the 22 year old EV company. In February, Tesla sales volume declines accelerated in both Europe and China. Tesla new car sales in Germany fell by 76% in February with just 1,429 new vehicles delivered compared to more than 6,000 in February 2024. Germany is by far Europe's largest EV market which adds even more concern. The blame sits clearly on Musk who backed Germany's far-right AfD party in the country's most recent elections. Adding to the German sales collapse, Tesla sales were down 24% in the Netherlands, 42% in Sweden, 48% in both Norway and Denmark, 45% in France, 55% in Italy, 10% in Spain and 53% in Portugal. The UK was the only positive with February sales up 14%. In Australia, Tesla sold 1,592 vehicles in February of 2025, down 71.9% below the 5,665 sold in February of 2024. In China, Tesla delivered 30,688 Shanghai-made Model 3 and Model Y EVs to buyers in February, down 49.2 percent from February of 2024. This compares to the 720,000 EVs purchased by Chinese consumers in February, down just 3%. Wayne
Hi All: This has not been a very good month for the world's most wealthy man... Along with one of his Falcon 9 Space-X rockets experiencing "a rapid unscheduled disassembly", aka, it exploded, for the second time in a row, and calling an AZ Senator a traitor for visiting Ukraine, there is something else overhanging the billionaire's head. Musk, really? And what is that? Musk could be headed for a loan default on his twitter loans. According to the Washington Post, Musk used more than half of his more than 170 million Tesla shares as collateral to acquire loans, and planned to borrow more to buy Twitter. Musk acquired X for $44 billion in Oct. of 2022 with Reuter's reporting that he borrowed an additional $13 billion from several banks, including Morgan Stanley, Barclays, and Bank of America. They reported last month that just $1.3 billion remained on the banks’ balance sheets. In a 2024 SEC filing, Musk was listed as holding 238,441,261 shares of Tesla stock that were “pledged as collateral to secure certain personal indebtedness.” At the time, he held 715,022,706 shares in total, according to the filing, meaning that roughly one third of Musk’s shares were serving as collateral for his loans. If the stock price goes low enough - that share price has not been disclosed, Musk could be forced to sell his shares to cover those loans that would be in default. Imagine the financial hit on that while owing the US Government 23.8 percent on the gain (personal income tax rate of 20% for long-term capital gains plus a 3.8 percent tax to fund Medicare). As of this afternoons close at $240.68, the stock has fallen 40.4% YTD. Adding insult to injury, over the past two days, I have parked next to to two Tesla's and took the following pics. The body panel build quality just like those I posted above is absolutely third world. Why would anyone buy one of these? Wayne
Lots of people who aren't "car people" don't care about panel gaps, consistent fitment, and things like that. I get a lot of comments about how nice my Model 3 is and that I must love it. A lot of people seem to think that Teslas are the ultimate car. To me, it does some things really well, and others surprisingly badly.
Hi Bill: I wish it was accident damage but to see it on every single Tesla I have walked around or seen in traffic ahead indicates it is the continuing poor build quality. I have only found one Tesla with proper HW fitment in the last year after looking at maybe 100 up close and hundreds on the road. Wayne
Hi All: You cannot make this stuff up! An acquaintance of mine purchased a foundation series and lost the motors just over a week ago. Now we have a Tesla CT sales stop due to body panels falling off. The Q1 2025 sales US and Global sales reports are going to be very interesting reads indeed. Wayne
Hi All: Embedded is a very well done video on two different Advanced Driver Assistance Sytems (ADAS) philosophies that is also both interesting and quite entertaining. The Tesla std is now all visual whereas everyone else uses a combination of Radar, LiDAR, and Video in combination to create their semi-autonomous driving platforms. Wayne
