Stellantis Future REEV and EV Large Vehicle Platform Introduced

    Stellantis unveiled its STLA Frame platform, a BEV-native, multi-energy platform engineered for full-size body-on-frame pickup trucks and SUVs.

    The STLA platform is designed for large packs and powerful motors with range-extender electric-vehicles (REEV) of up to 690 miles and 500 miles with battery only vehicles, a maximum tow cap of 14k lbs and a payload of 2,700 lbs. Additionally, Stellantis said the platform should supports water fording up to 24 inches.

    Intended to underpin RAM and Dodge full-size pickup trucks, light commercial vehicles and SUVs, STLA Frame vehicles will be offered as a full BEV system or REEV configuration. STLA Frame can also accommodate internal combustion, hybrid and hydrogen propulsion systems in the future.

    REEVs use an on-board generator and internal combustion engine to charge the battery. With no direct mechanical path from the engine to the wheels, the generator powers the motors to propel the vehicle and recharges the battery as needed, ensuring extended range while benefitting from the torque of the electric engines that bring the vehicle’s dynamics to new heights.     The STLA Frame is built with high-strength steel, delivering durability and rigidity with less weight. The widened center section houses the battery pack, with reinforced frame rails that protect the battery in the event of a side impact. A full-length belly pan reduces aerodynamic drag to help maximize driving range, underscoring Stellantis’ commitment to efficiency without sacrificing performance.

    The platform is designed for a BEV with a liquid-cooled battery pack ranging in size from 159 to more than 200 kWh. It’s also engineered to accept future energy storage technologies.

    Stellantis designed and assembled front and rear – up to 250 kW, motors that deliver AWD capability and can propel a vehicle from 0 to 60 mph in under 5 seconds. Flexible suspension designs, including air suspension, offer an optimized ride for diverse driving conditions and loading scenarios.

    The STLA Frame supports fast charging w/ 800-volt architecture and DCFC up to 350 kW. The REEVs can achieve up to 50 miles in 10 minutes with 400V DC fast charging at up to 175 kW.

    Future vehicles using the STLA Frame will be equipped with bi-directional charging allowing the vehicle’s battery to charge another EV, power a home in an emergency or feed electricity back to the grid.

    The release provided little on details but enough to see where they may be headed. I hope they move soon or their time could be up.

    I'm surprised they're still alive.
    Of course, I'm always surprised to see people using a full-size
    pickup to carry one human to their job.

    HI Edwin:

    I raised this question when the new owners renamed FCA to Stellantis. Some of the then employed US PR people railed on me. I stood my ground and said this was a dumb move with no good outcome. Of course that was just a name but sales were already flattening way back when.

    It only got worse from there...

    Over the weekend, Stellantis CEO, Carlos Tavares, resigned from the 4th largest automaker in the world with European shares hitting new 2 year lows this morning. Stellantis' shares were down 8.5% after hitting their lowest point since July 2022. The stock is down 45% year to date. An unsustainable level of unsold product in the U.S. and competition from Chinese rivals make the resignation more poignant.

    The next CEO will need to decide what brands to ax and where to cut.
