Q3 of 2024 US Auto Sales September saw new light-vehicle sales drop by 12.8% year over year, recovering slightly to a seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of 15.8 million, up from the previous year’s 15.7 million figure and August’s 15.3 million. Q3 of 2024 US OEM Auto Sales Overall Results and Highlights GM sold 659,601 vehicles in the US during Q3, down 2.2% from the 674,336 sold in Q3 of 2023. YTD sales of 1,949,920 were off 1.0% from the 1,969,522 sold through the same period of 2023. Highlights include another record quarter of EV sales with 32,095 total deliveries, up 60% year-over-year and up 46% compared to the second quarter of 2024. ********************* Toyota sold 1,729,519 vehicles in the US YTD, up 6.2% over the 1,628,816 sold through the same period of 2023. YTD electrified vehicle sales consisting of hybrids, plug-in hybrids, pure electrics were 41.1 percent of total sales volume and totaled 710,060 vehicles, up 56.0% over the 455,148 sold through the same period of 2023. ********************* Ford sold 504,039 vehicles in the US during Q3, up 0.7% over the 500,504 sold in Q3 of 2023. YTD sales of 1,548,172 were up 2.7% from the 1,508,072 sold through the same period of 2023. Ford's US Electric Vehicle sales totals were positive with 23,509 sold in Q3 of 2024, up 12.2% over the 20,962 sold in Q3 of 2023. YTD sales of 67,689 was up an even more impressive 45.0% over the 46,671 sold through the same period of 2023. Ford's US Hybrid vehicle sales really ramped up as they sold 48,101 hybrids during Q3 of 2024, up 38.0% over the 34,861 sold during Q3 of 2023. YTD sales of 140,344 vehicles were up 45.4% over the 96,514 sold through the same period of 2023. ********************* Stellantis sold 305,294 vehicles in the US during Q3 of 2024, down 19.6% below the 380,563 sold in Q3 of 2023. YTD sales of 982,827 were down 17.0% from the 1,183,538 sold through the same period of 2023. There were really no highlights to speak of given the onerous overall sales declines during Q3 and YTD. ********************* Nissan sold 212,068 vehicles in the US during Q3 of 2024, down 2.2% below the 216,878 sold in Q3 of 2023. YTD sales of 701,524 were up 0.6% over the 697,049 sold through the same period of 2023. Highlights included Versa sedan sales were up 68.1% during Q3, Ariya EV sales were up 23.3% during Q3, and Sentra sales were up 9.8% during Q3. ********************* Hyundai sold 210,971 vehicles in the US during Q3 of 2024, up 5.2% over the 200,534 sold in Q3 of 2023. YTD sales of 610,494 were up 2.6% over the 595,147 sold through the same period of 2023. ********************* Kia sold 584,170 vehicles in the US YTD, down 3.4% below the 604,674 sold through the same period of 2023. Highlights include September sales of Kia’s EVs and PHEVs were up 43-percent and 11-pecent respectively. The all-new EV9 experienced September and YTD sales of 2,096 and 15,970 respectively. ********************* Subaru sold 493,612 vehicles in the US YTD, up 5.6% over the 467,223 sold through the same period of 2023. In September, Crosstrek achieved its best sales month ever with 16,633 vehicles sold (surpassing the record of 16,092 set in September 2022), a 24.7 percent increase compared to September 2023. ********************* Tesla sold 166,923 vehicles in the US during Q3 of 2024, up 6.6% over the 156,621 sold in Q3 of 2023. YTD sales of 471,374 were down 4.5% below the 493,513 sold through the same period of 2023. Highlights include Q3 2024 US sales of 16,692 Cybertrucks from 0 in Q3 of 2023 and YTD sales of 28,250 from nothing before. ********************* Mercedes-Benz sold 97,806 vehicles in the US during Q3 of 2024, up 13.1% over the 85,850 sold in Q3 of 2023. YTD sales of 276,025 were up 1.2% above the 272,687 sold through the same period of 2023. ********************* Volkswagen sold 93,271 vehicles in the US during Q3 of 2024, up 6.3% over the 87,756 sold in Q3 of 2023. YTD sales of 275,984 were up 15.7% above the 232,543 sold through the same period of 2023. ID4 sales were off some 37% in September. ********************* BMW sold 83,412 vehicles in the US during Q3 of 2024, down 9.2% below the 91,849 sold in Q3 of 2023. The RAV4 (#16) and CR-V (#18) were standard stalwarts within the Top 10 just below the pickups but their sales have declined so sharply that they do not even appear in the Top 10 anymore! The Tesla Model 3 and Model Y have truly taken their place. If only Toyota and Honda would have spent more R&D on EVs instead of downplaying them, maybe they would not have lost so much market share to Tesla in particular? Q3 of 2024 US EV Sales U.S. EV grew 11% year over year in Q3 and reached record another high for both volume and market share. According to KKB, an estimated 346,3091 EVs were sold in Q3 2024, up 5% over Q2 levels. The EV share of sales in Q3 hit 8.9%, the highest level recorded and an increase from 7.8% in Q3 2023. After seeing sales fall year over year in the first half, Tesla returned to growth in Q3, with sales up 6.6%, thanks mostly to the Cybertruck. GM EV sales jumped significantly in Q3, up nearly 60% to 32,095. While still a distant second to market leader Tesla, GM improved its standing in the EV race thanks to strong sales from three of its four core brands – Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC. Hyundai/Kia fell behind GM into third place, with sales generally flat year over year at 29,609. Ford was fourth with EV sales of 23,509.
