Hi All: When I found out that a Buc-ee's in Ennis, TX was charging just $2.139 for a gallon of liquid gold, I started putting this plan together in my head. With a start in San Diego and a finish in Brunswick, GA, it appears this can be done in 3+ days while behind the wheel of my 2021 Prius Prime for ~ $80 in fuel. I would start at my San Diego area home and divert for emergency work along the way plus come back to my Nashville home as the final destination but just over $80 to cover 2,258-miles while crossing the country from coast-to-coast given today's fuel prices around the country? Wow! San Diego, CA Love's Travel Stop, 8993 Robert Larson Blvd, Las Cruces, NM - 672/672-miles ($2.859) -- 70 mpg/9.6 gal/$27.50 Buc-ee's, 1181 Creechville Rd, Ennis, TX - 694/1,366-miles ($2.139) -- 75 mpg/9.25 gal/$19.80 Shell, 205 S 16th Ave, Laurel, MS - 489/1,855-miles ($2.439) -- 75 mpg/6.5 gal/$15.90 Walmart, 11 Glynn Plaza, Brunswick, GA 31520 - 503/2,358-miles ($2.739) -- 75 mpg/6.7 gal/$18.35 Coast to Coast Fuel Cost Total: $81.55 Google Maps - 2,358-miles from coast to coast I must drive out to Memphis tomorrow and this thing was buzzing around in my head... Any thoughts? Wayne
Prices are heading downward, so it may be possible to lower that $80 to $75? "From Pacific to Atlantic, Across Four Time Zones, Spending Less On Fuel Than A Family Of Four Spends On Dinner At McDonalds" McDonalds is having their share of declining revenue because people aren't visiting as often since the prices have jumped.
Yikes! Shows I haven't been to McD's in a long time. If that's how the prices are going, my local restaurant chicken parmesan dinner takeout competes quite well. Two of us eat well for $22, tip included. Less nutrition and similar pricing from pizza joints, too.
Hi Chris: And just like that, prices at my local Sam's Club jumped $0.28/gallon last night. WTI is up just $3 since Monday at $71.88/bbl. The Buc'ees that was posted at $2.139 was $2.289 last night and $2.499 today so maybe someone mistyped a price on Tuesday? In any case, McDonald's did have one deal for yesterday and yesterday only. Wayne
I think the change in pricing has more to do with certain pagers exploding and the resulting regional instability. They will seize on any excuse to add a quarter to every gallon. We can't blame it on the winter-blend changeover because that doesn't happen for almost two months. Hopefully I can skate through on what I have in the tank until prices come back down again.
True, but it doesn't stop them from fiddling with the price because there is a pause in production while they transition. I passed BJs the morning and their gas prices were 2.85 and 2.70 for members with the BJs credit card? So far the NYC area hasn't been hit by any sudden bumps in price.
Hi All: Marian and I ate at the famous "Peg Leg Porker" in Nashville yesterday. On the way back, I had to stop at BNA which guides me past the local Sam's Club about 2-miles from the AP. Within the GB app over 36-hours, prices have gone from $2.43/gal to $2.75/gal, and back to $2.71/gal as of last night. Somebody posted on Gas Buddy that they are back down to $2.43 as of this afternoon. Crazy indeed. Chris, I was thinking of the pagers and walkie-talkies in Lebanon as well. Wayne
Hi All: Since I am starting to get more interested in this project as an inflation reduction act story, here is the latest. While looking over the GB heat map, I am sure some of you remember me speaking about seeing $2.50/gal prices up near Alamogordo, NM when Marian and I visited White Sands NP a few weeks back. Sure enough, they still have a number of stations at $2.58/gal incl a Circle K where I receive a $0.03/gal discount. I might add a gallon at a Murphy's Express - currently running at $2.719 today, which will provide enough fuel to make it to Alamogordo covering 68-miles if I do not still have enough in the tank to make it their directly. I will use the same methods I always use while heading to higher priced fuel locations. Refuel sooner and top off before hitting Brunswick., GA for example. My latest... San Diego, CA Murphy's Express, 3480 Northrise Dr., Las Cruces, NM - 692/692-miles ($2.719) -- 70 mpg/1.0x gal/$2.75 Circle K, 657 S White Sands Blvd. Alamogordo, NM - 62/754-miles ($2.559) -- 70 mpg/9.8 gal/$25.10 Murphy's Express, 401 S Beckham Ave, Tyler, TX - 675/1,429-miles ($2.429) -- 75 mpg/9.0/$21.90 Marathon, 5213 Hwy 11, Laurel, MS - 405/1,834-miles ($2.319) -- 75 mpg/5.4/$12.55 Walmart, 11 Glynn Plaza, Brunswick, GA 31520 - 501/2,335-miles ($2.699) -- 75 mpg/6.7/$18.10 Crossing the Continent on $80 2,335-miles Wayne
I checked expedia just now and the cheapest flight from SAN to SAV (Savannah GA, nearest big airport) one way on 10/4 is $226. Worth mentioning because people often say it's cheaper to fly than drive. At 20mpg, I would think so. But in this case, the drive will be roughly 1/3 the cost. Or if you prefer, a 65% savings. Nice chunk of inflation reduction right there.
Allegedly (by Skyscanner) one can fly 2500 miles Boston to Portland, OR for $89 in October and November. Tough competition if you can fly cattle class. Add: crush this easily by having 2-4 people.
I'd rather drive 1000 miles or more, just need time and preferably without a hotel stay. The latter is hard to do if traveling with my wife.
Nine hundred miles was about my daily limit. Once, we traveled to my friend's mom's place in 2.5 days because of a semi-emergency & had the car doing 70+MPH. Would have adored my present over-sized tires in that time period for the low geared car. Her brother was in the military & drove in a non-military but radar equipped convoy from the ship docked in southern Texas to northern Wisconsin in 24 hours. At times they were going 100MPH. Generally, I poke along at sub-speed limit, pleasantly watching the terrain moving slowly by me.
900 miles is plenty in a day. I could do the thousand miles plus with a nap along the way. It's been a long time since I did the Massachusetts to Chicago trip.
I did the thousand miles in a day thing. But I was young then (41). Oh, and it was on my Honda VFR750F. A thousand miles in a car is easy. To be honest, the last time I did that was 15 years ago. I wouldn't try it today.
Hi All: I checked all the stations along the CA to GA corridor and they are still tracking plus or minus $0.02/gallon from the last post above. This still appears doable in this day and age. Now all I have to do is execute. And if Marian will come along, this is a 3-day drive. If not, 4 + days. Wayne
