Someone in the apt. complex here, flew a drone over the Osprey nest Tower just outside the complex & got a close picture of the nest....with one very angry parent Osprey. The Osprey attacked the drone, but the drone pilot was able to avoid the Osprey & land the drone safely.

    Hi Litesgon:

Whenever I am flying the Mini3 Pro, I am careful to look for birds of any type as well. They will attack the drone so I am quick to decrease altitude in one hell of a hurry if I see one swooping in.

Hot Deal - DJI Mini 3 just $299.99 at Costco

[IMG] 4k, high quality drones are finally affordable for the average consumer.

    Wayne Gerdes – CleanMPG – June , 2024

While the DJI Mini3 Pro is heading back to Toyota since they purchased it last year, I picked up a Mini 3 Fly More Combo (DJI RC) with this hot deal but for $559 plus tax. The Fly More Combo (DJI RC) includes the RC controller (5.5" screen) vs the Costco RC-N1 with no screen in which you use your smartphone for the display, (3) 38-minute flight time batteries (~ 30-minutes in actual use), 3 sets of spare props, a 2-way charging hub -charges the three batteries - one at a time, and can be used to charge external USB-C items like smartphones or whatever from the charging hub and batteries within. It also includes a USB-A to USB-C and a USB-C to USB-C cable(s), plus a worthless shoulder bag.

As an introduction, here is what the DJI Mini 3 is:

    Meet the DJI Mini 3

The DJI Mini 3 is a Sub-249g Drone for Everyone, Anywhere

In December of 2022, DJI introduced the Mini 3, a compact, ultra-lightweight camera drone. At less than 249 grams with foldable motor/prop arms, the Mini 3 is portable enough to take anywhere. In addition, due to the light weight, is exempt from most drone regulations worldwide. Its 1/1.3-inch camera sensor films 4K HDR video and 12MP photos with True Vertical Shooting. With these features and more, DJI Mini 3 lets users capture any moment from above the ground and down to it.

The DJI Mini 3 followed in the footsteps of its sibling, the forward collision avoidance equipped and live tracking Mini 3 Pro.

Lightweight, Portable, and Affordable are its Standouts

The Mini 3 was specifically designed to weigh under 249 grams with the std. 2,453 mAh, 38-minute, Li-Ion battery pack. This compact design makes DJI Mini 3 easy to carry in your bag or pocket while also satisfying drone regulations in many parts of the world with no registration or exam required.

    DJI Mini 3 in Detail

The DJI Mini 3 records in 4K/30fps in HDR with true-to-life colors, both day and night. A 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor and fixed f/1.7 aperture allow excellent image resolution, a sharper depth of field, and lower image noise generating cleaner images. 4-in-1 pixel technology can create photos from 48MP to 12MP in size. Dual native ISO and chip-level HDR technology helps create incredibly clear images with excellent results. The image quality continues with True Vertical Shooting in which the camera rotates 90 degrees (portrait mode) for social media platforms.

    Fly Longer, Smoother, Further

DJI Mini 3 comes with the standard Intelligent Flight Battery to provide a max flight time of up to 38 minutes. Extend your flights by up to 51 minutes with the Intelligent Flight Battery Plus. DJI O2 digital video transmission delivers a 720p/30fps live feed from up to 10 km away while using anti-interference technology to deliver a reliable connection throughout the flight. With a wind resistance of up to 24 mph, the Mini 3 can hover steady and keep a stable image in a variety of conditions. In practice, flying in a crosswind of > 15 mph will overwhelm the image stabilization and create a yoyoing effect. In other words, do not fly in heavy crosswinds and/or gusty conditions.

    Cinematic Shots with a Tap

DJI Mini 3 makes content creation a breeze with QuickShots, a suite of pre-programmed flight and filming paths to let anyone make beautiful footage in both landscape and vertical shooting. These include:
    • Dronie: Aircraft flies back and up with the camera locked on the subject
    • Helix: Aircraft flies up and spirals around the subject
    • Rocket: Aircraft flies up with the camera facing down
    • Circle: Aircraft circles around the subject
    • Boomerang: Aircraft flies around the subject in an oval path, ascending as it flies away and descending as it returns
Effortless from the unboxing to actual flight

Flying is easier than you would think, and DJI Mini 3 supports several automatic intelligent functions to help get you started. Auto Takeoff to 4' elevation above its launch elevation helps you start your journey. The Return to Home (RTH) function includes Smart RTH, Low Battery RTH, and Failsafe RTH, instructing the aircraft to automatically return to its starting point in situations like a dropped signal or low battery. The Mini 3 also combines GNSS with the downward vision system and the infrared sensing system to hover stably and accurately, so you fly confidently. I had my 12-year-old grandson flying within 1-minute of a 5-minute tutorial and he enjoyed the hell out of it too. ;)

    DJI Accessories

The DJI RC is a lightweight and easy-to-use remote controller with a built-in screen. Thanks to the built-in DJI Fly app, it is ready to use without the need to connect to a smartphone, making takeoff more focused and aerial photography more enjoyable. And yes, using the RC is so much easier than using your smartphone as I had about a week experience doing that and it sucked due to the connections and disconnect of the std. non-screen controller, spring loaded smartphone retention setup, and ungainly cabling.

An Intelligent Flight Battery Plus supports a max flight time of 51 minutes although with it, drives the drones weight above 250g adn becomes private pilot non-compliant without some FAA certifications for example.

The Two-Way Charging Hub charges the remote controller and three batteries in sequence, serves as a mobile power source, and stores batteries for convenient carrying.

An available ND Filters Set adapts the Mini 3 camera to strong lighting conditions with ND16/64/256 filters to always be ready for the perfect shot. I found these to be too much of a guess as to which was the right one to use at the right time. The non-DJI variable ND filters are a real answer to flying in bright light.

A 360° Propeller Guard fully covers the propellers and is easy to attach and detach, ensuring flight safety in a simple and efficient way. They added mass and did not allow folding of the drone without removal after a flight day was complete.

And a DJI Prop Holder that binds the front and back propellers without stressing the connections when the aircraft is folded for more convenient storage

    Additional Feature sets
    • 180°, Wide, and Sphere panorama, with Sphere Panorama Viewer 2.0 in the DJI Fly app offering a 720° view to drag and zoom a Sphere panorama
    • QuickTransfer with max download speed of 25 MB/s
    • Supports large-angle tilt to introduce more creative possibilities
    • Digital zoom at 2x in 4K/30fps, 4x in 1080p, and 2x in 12MP photo. It introduces noise at max zoom so I rarely found it to be useful
On top of the Mini 3 with RC Controller and Fly More Combo kit, I purchased off Amazon the following accessories for an additional $105:
All in, I just got tagged for almost $700 of drone and drone gear. It was probably not worth it but it may entice me to complete more automotive vids. ;)
