    Hi Chris:

Toyota picked up this drive but only on an official second. They asked me not to submit the paperwork for this non-adjudicated one but go through the motions to train their fuel partner, Chevron. I will save the final results on the second drive for the second officially adjudicated one. I have had this drive in the Guinness World Records queue for over 2 years waiting for the all-new 5th gen but so much for that. ;)

That said, Chevron was kind enough to provide $200 worth of fuel cards but when fuel has averaged more than $5/gallon, a 10-gallon fill costs 1/4 of the drive and I am filling 4 times to get to NY with maybe a gallon left. In other words, they do not cover the first amount to top off the fuel or any to get back.

So this has turned out to be a learning drive from LA to NYC and I am good with that. Toyota asked that I not share any numbers but they are significantly higher than the previous attempt.

I am writing this up in Augusta, GA, less than 800-miles from NY City Hall so another long day and this "practice" run is in the books. I mean, complete and only to be seen by Google servers holding my Google Drive contents.

Augusta = not far from Tybee Island. Beautiful destination this time of year.
Between Augusta and NYC, there is a lot of construction on I-95. And we know that's pure gold on fuel economy drives in hybrid vehicles as long as you're not on a time deadline.
3.06L/100km is the record, eh? I could clobber that in the HEH and it doesn't have the capabilities of the latest Prius. The HEH has a little baby Smartstream engine that doesn't have a lot of low end oomph so climbing hills is rough on the trip average. I suspect the larger engine in the '23 Prius is going to do a much better job of climbing up to the Continental Divide.

    Hi Chris:

All good points. From the launch in LA at 100' ASL, the climb over the San Bernardino Mountain range's Cajon Pass - 4,200' ASL, to Needles, CA at 520' ASL, the new Prius was south of the mid 9s.

If weather and winds cooperate, it's going to be a very revealing journey.
If the destination is actually NYC and you find yourself near Flushing Meadow park, there's a good spot for a photo shoot after the run.
I think this link will work - https://goo.gl/maps/8BVDEmLahLrZ5QDQA - the New York Hall Of Science, with the two rockets in the background. The Prius would look sharp with that backdrop.

    Hi Chris:

Possibly the first week in Sept. for the official one?

    Hi All:

Adding another comparison data point for taller drivers. After almost 20k miles in the 5th gen and going back to my 4th gen Prime for a few miles, there are notable differences.

The 5th gen has longer and more comfortable seat bottoms and the track length has been extended significantly allowing more ergonomic comfort for taller drivers on longer drives.

On the downside, your ankle angle while on the pedal has been reduced to almost 90 degrees from an obtuse angle previously and it hampers long term, behind the wheel comfort. Most will be on RCC so it will not matter but there is a difference.

For taller drivers... With the lower seating position and longer track, I am having to use my shoulder against the B-Pillar to to swing my legs and than my torso up and out. My shoulder is actually causing premature wear to the door seal where my shoulder rubs against it every time I get out.

I am being a bit more careful now but it is something taller drivers will need to take note of.

    Hi Chris:

Bob called me a few months back when I was planning the first drive just after purchasing the 23.

The GWR is in the bag. As long as you have the one of the best CleanMPG'ers alongside you, the journey will be far less stressful.

Wayne, did you ever make a speed vs. FE chart of the 2023 Prius? An admittedly quick search didn't show anything.

    Hi Nerfer:

I did not but plan to do a review of an off the lot - Press Fleet, this coming December in California. It will not be an LE as there are no LEs in Press Fleet's in the entire country.

Thanks. I should mention, this was a great review, with detail you don't find at the big car review sites!

I'm thinking of getting back to a hybrid, probably PHEV, after 8 years of driving a "gas guzzler" (Mazda 3i sedan, manual, which is giving me 37 mpg (calculated) and has a lot more pep than my G2 Prius did). This is a good place for doing some research.

See, Wayne. As I've said before, my over-sized tires solve that problem. It's wonderful to get in or out of my Elantra now. All those OE small tires are ruining the health of everybody. :p;) OK, ok. It helps with my shorter legs, too.

Of course not. Yota doesn't want to promote such a low-profit unicorn. Here in the Midwest we may never see one.

The low entry probably is the price of aerodynamics. Otherwise difficult to achieve unless the car is shaped like an airplane's fuselage and has 2 to 3 wheels.

Except the Cd of the gen5 is higher than the gen4's. The CdA might equal out from the lower roof.

Sure. I agree. Still, have to go with the people's preference for power and subjective looks. I doubt every crease is aerodynamically useful. Worth the likely number of ICE-to-hybrid converts provided Toyota keeps up with supply.

The love for SUV/CUV is hard to crack aerodynamically, though the typically available, extra volume for cargo is really useful for most people, myself included. The Model Y is pretty amazing aerodynamically.

At least for my ICE Elantras, the taller tires do NOT reduce MPG, because the rpms are lowered 8%. Coupled with my slow driving, which reduces the need for lowest coefficients of drag, my older non-hybrid Elantras, have both reached 46MPG. Yeah, the Elantras have been sued successfully by lead-footers, who couldn’t(in truth, wouldn't) get 30MPG.

Why on earth would they want to do that ?

I'm unhappy with Toyota at the moment because of my experience with the Prius.
I may never buy another Toyota.

I've always been unhappy with Toyota, because their prices never let me experience Toyotas.
