Complicated interpretations of satellite data performed in multiple wavelengths, now show that calving icebergs are just as important as warming temperatures that melt ices. A complementary study detailing how warmth intrudes to the interior, away from coastlines to move & melt ices & a video also add greatly to our increasing knowledge of Antarctic ice changes.

As of August 7, 2024, Antarctic sea ice is 2nd lowest amount, of which only to-date 2023 losses were lower. Only 1 week before, this year’s loss was nearly the same as 2023. Antarctic sea ice loss was 15.86 million sq km, nearly 10% lower than the to-date 1981-2010 year average.
