Electrify America Debuts First Upscale Indoor DCFC Station in San Francisco

Located two blocks from the Bay Bridge, the indoor charging station provides easy access for EV drivers visiting the South Market (SoMa) neighborhood. It features 20 350 kW hyper-fast chargers. While waiting for their vehicles to charge, customers can make use of the dedicated temperature-controlled lounge areas with food and beverage vending options, complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi and restrooms.

With a focus on the customer experience, the all-new indoor charging station offers EV drivers 24/7 access, round-the-clock monitoring and security, and a lounge area providing customers with comfort and convenience amenities, in addition to 20 of Electrify America’s next-generation chargers.

In 2022, Electrify America introduced "The Charging Station of the Future, Today" concept to create comfortable spaces to enhance the EV driver experience.

Electrify America already has outdoor flagship charging stations in Baker and Santa Clara, California, that have ten or more chargers. The station on Harrison Street is the first station in the Electrify America network to reflect its strategy to build larger stations to meet the growing demand of EV drivers. Electrify America will continue this transition with new flagship charging facilities planned in metro areas nationwide.

While I waited for over 18-months from the initial announcement that the first station in ND would open - Jamestown, ND, the second opened up just a few weeks after with little fanfare and even less notice.

From what I am reading online, they are quickly upgrading their underperforming cabinets with new power modules and it is moving the reliability and consistency needle more than just a little. I cannot wait to check them out in person!

Moving forward, in May of 2023, the Electrify America network celebrated its fifth anniversary of its first installed and working high speed DCFC charging station. In those five years, the company has grown logarithmically paralleling the industry as thousands of BEV owners come to rely on the company’s hyper-fast charging experiences.

At the start of 2024, their North America network had over 900 stations and 4,000 total chargers in the United States and Canada and experienced year-over-year increases expressed by the doubling of the number of charging sessions each of the last three years.

They expect 2024 to be one of their best years as with continued expansion and updates to their network including the very latest charger hardware, open larger charging stations to meet the demand for public DC fast charging and expand Plug&Charge payment technology. Electrify America’s Commercial 350 kW DCFC Infrastructure Expands By One

Milestone HD DCFC Charging Infrastructure Project including Microgrid with energy storage and solar enhances commercial charging resiliency and sustainability.

Electrify America and NFI just announced the grand opening of NFI’s state-of-the-art DCFC facility in Ontario, CA. Supporting NFI’s fleet of 50 heavy-duty all-electric trucks, the project advances the electrification of drayage operations between the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. The new charging facility will feature roughly 7 megawatts of charging capacity shared across 38 chargers, with 350 kW rate DCFCers for trucks so equipped.

NFI collaborated with Electrify America and Southern California Edison to energize its electric charging depot at its warehouse facility in Ontario, California, completing a crucial milestone in the electrification of NFI's dedicated port drayage services. NFI's newly inaugurated electric truck maintenance shop at the site is also operational.

NFI’s battery-electric fleet is used to run routes from Ontario to the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, performing drayage operations and delivering products to warehouses in Southern California – for customers spanning from manufacturing to retail. Its fleet of Freightliner eCascadia and Volvo VNR Electric trucks typically runs two port pickups per day, per truck, for an average of 220 miles driven between being recharged.

When fully completed later this year, the depot will be coupled with nearly four megawatts (nearly eight megawatt-hours) of onsite battery energy storage and approximately 1 megawatt of solar power, helping to promote vehicle-grid integration and reduce stress on the grid by shifting energy usage to off-peak times. The charging depot will also feature microgrid functionality – allowing for charging resiliency for fleet operations even when utility power is otherwise unavailable. The capability of the cumulative charging, energy storage, and solar power capacity at the charging depot exceeds the reported peak load of the Empire State Building at roughly 10 megawatts.

Electrify America and NFI’s new initiative will continue efforts to address the negative impact of emissions.

In addition to NFI and Electrify America’s investments, the project is funded by the Joint Electric Truck Scaling Initiative (JETSI) between the California Air Resources Board, California Energy Commission, Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee, Port of Long Beach, Southern California Edison, and South Coast Air Quality Management District.

Along with a number of new and better performing - charging rate and reliability, Gen 4 chargers now installed across the country, here are a few new additions to the ongoing Electrify America story.

First off, the Gen 4 chargers...

In late September, Electrify America (EA) and Porsche will be adding the all-new, 2025 Macan Electric to the one year of complimentary 30-minute sessions with Plug&Charge plan nationwide.

The all-new Macan Electric is the latest addition to the Porsche vehicle lineup. Its 800V architecture supports a 270-kilowatt (kW) potential charging rates under ideal conditions, making it one of the fastest charging rates in the industry.

To activate the charging benefit, owners can enroll during the Porsche Charging Service process. In addition, drivers can use the app or in-vehicle navigation to locate nearby charging stations, verify charger availability, and navigate to the charging stations.

Electrify America is the largest open DC fast charging network with over 970 stations and 4,350 chargers in North America. Additionally, it is the first open DC fast-charging network to offer Plug&Charge technology to capable vehicles.

Charging at an Electrify America DCFC in Baker, CA​

Owning and charging a Nissan Ariya EV will become simpler and more seamless with the launch of the NISSAN ENERGY Charge Network. The new network allows Nissan Ariya and future Nissan EV drivers to use their MyNISSAN app to find charging stations, see real-time charger availability and pay for charging – all in one streamlined experience.

This enhancement to the MyNISSAN app simplifies EV ownership by consolidating vehicle management and public charging into one app. Users store a default payment method in the MyNISSAN app, then once at a compatible charging station, simply tap an on-screen button to start a charging session within the NISSAN ENERGY Charge Network. This new feature will be available to MyNISSAN app users by November 2024.

This functionality is not currently available to Nissan LEAF owners as they will have to charge via an app the old fashion way.

Additionally, starting later this year Nissan will make available to Ariya drivers a North American Charging Standard (NACS) adapter. This adapter will allow Ariya drivers to conveniently charge at compatible Tesla Supercharger locations – dramatically increasing the number of public charging locations available to Ariya. In 2025, Nissan will begin offering EVs for the U.S. and Canadian markets with a NACS port.

VW announced its enhanced charging plan for the all-new, all-electric 2025 ID. Buzz, in collaboration with Electrify America (EA). This initiative provides ID. Buzz owners with a seamless and cost-effective charging experience for three years, ensuring that drivers can fully embrace electric mobility with ease and convenience across the largest open DC fast-charging electric vehicle network in the U.S.

The 2025 ID. Buzz charging plan includes three years of Electrify America’s Pass+ membership ($252 value) and a preferential kWh rate providing ~ 25 percent savings compared to standard pay-as-you-go options on the EA network, plus 500 kWh of complimentary charging. The ID. Buzz also features Plug&Charge functionality, streamlining the charging process at Electrify America stations. By activating Plug&Charge in the Electrify America mobile app, ID. Buzz drivers simply plug in their vehicle and the charging session will automatically initiate, eliminating the need for them to reach for their wallet, smartphone, or bank card.

Electrify America Opens Expanded Technology Campus

Electrify America (EA) announced the opening of Electrify America Technology Campus, located near the company’s headquarters in Northern Virginia. The new larger location spans more than 32,000 sq ft, featuring 22 Hyper-Fast chargers and a new Technology Development Lab. The expanded facility allows for advanced validation and stress-testing to ensure equipment and its components operate reliably in diverse real-world conditions.

Electrify America Technology Campus includes two labs: the new Center of Excellence, which opened in its original location in 2018, and the new Technology Development Lab, allowing Electrify America to further scale testing capabilities and analysis to help deliver a seamless charging experience across North America. Part of Electrify America’s ecosystem that underpins customer experience, the labs complement its 24/7 Network Operations Center, 24/7 Customer Contact Center, Field Service Engineers, and Preventative maintenance.

Electrify America’s network has experienced exponential growth in customer charging sessions, with over 10 million sessions recorded in 2023, compared to 5 million in 2022 and 1.4 million in 2021. The new facility is critical to enhancing the EV charging experience, serving as a hub for future and ongoing automaker collaborations and new quality and conformance testing.

Since opening the original Center of Excellence in 2018, more than 35,000 hours of testing has helped Electrify America expedite the deployment of technologies like Hyper-Fast 350 kilowatt (kW) charging since 2018, Plug&Charge capabilities since 2020, and the introduction of liquid-cooled cables to deliver the highest charging speeds.

 

Hi All:

On the way back from GA, I had the opportunity to stop at what was one of Electrify America's flagship charging station locations in Baker, CA. The new San Francisco location is their new Hero spot today.

In any case, I found out that it had been upgraded with the latest EA V4 350 KW charging stations from IIRC, legacy ABB 350s. My previous 2 visits in a Porsche Taycan and Kia EV6 allowed just over 150 KW initiations and not much higher with initial SOCs from 5 to 15%. This was unacceptable when the Taycan is capable of just under 275 KW and the EV6, just under 240 KW charge rates, both holding onto > 200 KW through 50% too.

At $0.64/kWh, it is not cheap. Fortunately a Pass + Membership will drop that rate to $0.48/kWh. Not great but better than $0.64 per.​

While I was there, there were no 800V architecture EVs charging on any of 350 KW stations when I arrived. After about 15-minutes, a Hyundai Ioniq 5 owner, Ed, showed up. I asked if he would not mind if I took a photo of the initiation KW rate. He agreed and told me the highest he had ever seen was just under 200 KW on his Ioniq. Low and behold, we were both surprised at the charge rate initiated given the high SOC he had arrived with. The highest rate I have ever seen on one is 237 KW and that was when starting from a SOC of just 5%.

I will be damned, the Ioniq 5 was taking on 217 KW from that high of a SOC when I snapped the pic.​

In other words, the new EA V4 350 KWs appear to be not only much more reliable but provide the advertised charge rate that the vehicles attached are capable of. That is a very positive change and I will try and test an 800V architecture EV on a much larger sample size to make sure what I saw was for real or just a one-off.

Electrify America Opens New 20 Charger Station in San Diego

San Diego, CA, Sept. 26, 2024 – Electrify America announced the opening of its latest large format charging station; at Simon’s Fashion Valley in San Diego, featuring 20 Hyper-Fast chargers - capable of up to 350 KWs. With easy access to multiple shopping and dining options, the charging station is part of Electrify America’s plan to meet current and future demand by opening larger format stations.

The company’s 1000th charging station joins an existing Electrify America station at Fashion Valley, increasing the availability of Hyper-Fast chargers on the property by a total of 23. While charging at Fashion Valley, guests are encouraged to use the Electrify America mobile app to track their charging session. Users can also set up notifications to alert them when their session is over so they can unplug and allow another guest to use the charger.

Customers with eligible EVs can seamlessly charge at Electrify America’s Plug&Charge-enabled network after enrolling in their vehicle’s Electrify America Premium Offer. Plug&Charge allows EV drivers to simply plug in to start a charging session, eliminating the need to reach for a wallet, smartphone or bank card.

In 2023, Electrify America doubled the number of charging sessions, delivering over 10 million sessions and dispensing approximately 380 GWh of energy. To meet the demand of the ever-growing EV community and help facilitate the adoption of EVs, the company announced its goal to reach 5,000 Hyper-Fast public and commercial chargers open or constructed by the end of 2024.

Hi All:

An Ioniq 5 driver named Roderick was able to charge at a an all-new Electrify America DCFC in pilot testing. They are designed by Alpitronic, the same company that supplies Ionna with their DCFC’ers.

As you can clearly see in his photos, the new EA’s not only support native CCS and NACS, but they also split load so two vehicles can charge from a single station albeit at splitting the peak current.

One station is in Florida and the other is in Connecticut. The CT 400 KW EA DCFC is located at Waterford Commons station, 915 Hartford Turnpike in Waterford.

Unfortunately, he arrived with a SOC of 49% with no preconditioning, so he was not going to find out if it would charge at the Ioniq 5s peak of ~ 270 KW.

The new information screen shows the current SOC, charge rate, connector type being used, energy delivered, charge time, and cost.

The Alpitronic is quickly becoming the go to DCFC with a reputation of reliability and ultra-fast charging rates. Maybe that is why Electrify America is testing them. And it is great to see as well!
