2022 Ford F-150 Electric is the Ultimate Backup Power source!

With the soon to arrive, all-electric, 2022 F-150 Lightning pickup, Ford is the first in the U.S. to offer the ability for customers to power their homes with an electric truck when the grid goes dark, providing new capabilities that enhance the energy independence for future owners. Not just a few appliances but Your Entire Home!

Ford is partnering with Sunrun, the nation’s leading solar company, to enhance home energy management, leveraging the substantial onboard battery capability of the all-electric F-150 Lightning. Americans experienced the most power interruptions on record in 2020, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration; and with F-150 Lightning, homeowners can use their truck to maintain their routines during brief or extended outages.

Sunrun is the preferred installer of F-150 Lightning home charging solutions, including the 80A Ford Charge Station Pro and Home Integration System, which enables the F-150 Lightning to store and supply power to homes in a variety of ways. Sunrun will also offer home solar options to customers in select areas who are interested in leveraging more renewable energy.

Ford F-150 Electric Performing Like no Other

    Power for Your Home

Ford Intelligent Backup Power is making its debut on the F-150 Lightning, providing owners with the ability to use bidirectional power technology from their all-electric truck to provide energy to their homes during an outage, whether sheltering in a storm or keeping cool in a heat wave.

The F-150 Lightning extended-range battery system can store 131 KWh of energy and deliver up to 9.6 KW of power in a cleaner, quieter, more efficient way versus gasoline-powered generators, and with greater capacity than many wall battery units. F-150 Lightning can also offer lower-cost energy storage in a product customers already own – their truck. My entire home uses far less than 9.6 KW, even during peak use so you can just imagine what this capability could do for the average consumer.

With Ford Intelligent Backup Power and the Home Integration System, F-150 Lightning automatically kicks in to power your home if the grid goes down. Once power is restored, the system automatically reverts back to utility power. Based on an average U.S. home at 30 KWh of use per day, F-150 Lightning with extended-range battery provides full home power for up to three days, or as long as 10 days when used in conjunction with solar power or rationing!

    Home Installations

Ford Intelligent Backup Power customers need to equip their home with the Ford Charge Station Pro and Home Integration System, which is composed of a power inverter plus a dark start battery and transfer switch, enabling the two-way power flow. Buyers of the extended-range F-150 Lightning automatically receive the Ford Charge Station Pro standard. Standard-range truck customers can purchase the 80A Ford Charge Station Pro and pay for activation separately. The Home Integration System – developed together with Sunrun – can be purchased through Sunrun this spring.

Ford is partnering with Sunrun to provide a seamless installation solution with Sunrun installing the specific charging hardware so customers can be assured their system will work reliably. Additionally, customers interested in combining Ford Charge Station Pro installation with solar power may be eligible to do so for as little as zero dollars down and reduced installation pricing!

    Smarter Power

In the future, Ford will introduce additional F-150 Lightning features to help customers potentially save money and take pressure off the electric grid during peak usage. Ford Intelligent Power, for example, will allow customers to power their homes with their truck’s battery when electricity rates are higher, while charging the truck when rates are lower – or from their own solar-powered rooftop. This load shift can also help buffer the load on the nation’s grid and help reduce the use of higher carbon energy without affecting daily routines or charging schedules. This is F’ING KILLER!!! :D :D :D

Retail customers will need to have the Ford Charge Station Pro and Home Integration System installed, and standard range customers will also need to purchase the same one-time from Ford to enable the feature. Commercial customers can work with Ford Pro to plan an appropriate home charging installation.

Customers can contact Sunrun about installation and solar options ahead of delivery. To learn more about Ford Intelligent Backup Power and home requirements, please visit the Ford Intelligent Backup Power website.

    Hi All:

If you are not excited about the electrification of the most popular vehicle on the planet yet, maybe this will move you?

    2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Launch

Ford and UAW leaders will host customers and employees to celebrate the start of F-150 Lightning production at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn, Michigan. Ford employees and F-150 Lightning customers will join the “Job 1” event for the first-ever full-size all-electric pickup to go on sale, a milestone moment in the country’s shift to electric vehicles.

Ford F-Series pickup has been America’s best-selling truck for 45 years in a row1 and is second only to the iPhone in revenue among all American consumer products, according to a 2020 study. The Rouge Electric Vehicle Center is an ultra-modern new facility within Ford’s historic Rouge Complex where Henry Ford perfected the moving assembly line and scaled the Model T.

The event begins April 26, 1:30 p.m. eastern and will be livestreamed at Lightning Strikes.

    Hi All:

Can this truck change everything? Let's find out.

    2022 Ford F-150 Lightning

The XLT and Lariat trims with the extended range battery will provide 320-miles of all-electric range from 2-motors, one-front and one rear offering up 563 hp of total power and 775 lb-ft of torque. This is enough to drive this full-sized pickup to 60 in the mid 4s. Did I mention up to 17.6 KW of external power capability? 1,800 lbs of cargo cap with the larger battery and can tow 10k lbs. With a whole lot less range of course.

And the charging specs for the extended range battery equipped F-150 Lightning.

    150 kW DCFC - 15-80% in 41 minutes

    LEVEL 2

80A Ford Charge Station Pro - 15-100% in 8 hours
    48A Connected Charge Station - 15-100% in 13 hours
    32A/240W Mobile Charger - 15-100% in 19 hours

Oh, and Ford said they can deliver 150k units by mid 2023. My fingers are crossed on that one given the mess of a supply chain as of late.

Ford's All-New 2023 F-150 Lightning Shipping to Customers with More HP, More Payload Capacity, and More Range

F-150 Lightning customers will benefit from more capability than they expected from their trucks.

    2023 Ford F-150 Lightning

F-150 Lightning, the only full-size electric pickup available now with a starting price less than $40,000, will begin to ship to customers in the coming days, starting with the Pro Series, as Ford establishes itself as a leader in the electric vehicle revolution. Lightning is the smartest, most innovative F-150 that Ford has ever built, with the freedom of a 10-kilowatt smart power plant on wheels, software updates that will make it even better over time and Built Ford Tough capability.

Both the standard- and extended-range battery packs offered on F-150 Lightning will deliver more horsepower than originally targeted and announced when the truck was revealed in May 2021, and the payload capacity increased as well.

The extended-range battery pack produces 580 horsepower – up from the targeted 563 horsepower. The standard-range battery pack delivers 452 – up from the targeted 426 originally promised. Both packs are capable of producing 775 lbs.-ft. of torque, more than any other F-150 pickup ever.

F-150 Lightning is the only electric vehicle that is Built Ford Tough, and its maximum available payload capacity also increased from original targets. Properly equipped F-150 Lightning pickups can now haul an extra 235 pounds for a total 2,235 pounds of maximum available hauling capability.

Members of the Ford Team Ring Wall Street's Opening Bell

    April 28, 2022

To mark this milestone, Ford Chief Financial Officer John Lawler, members of the F-150 Lightning team, the UAW and other Ford leaders and partners served as honorary ringers for the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange just before 9:30 a.m. EDT Thursday.

Built at the ultra-modern Rouge Electric Vehicle Center within Ford’s historic Rouge Complex in Dearborn, Michigan, F-150 Lightning is the only electric vehicle that is Built Ford Tough. Ford F-Series, America’s best-selling truck for 45 years in a row, is second only to the iPhone in revenue among all American consumer products, according to a 2020 study.

F-150 Lightning joins the Mustang Mach-E SUV and E-Transit commercial van in Ford’s growing lineup of innovative, mainstream electric vehicles. Ford is on track to deliver more than 2 million electric vehicles annually by 2026, equal to about one-third of the company’s global volume, on the way to 50% by 2030.

F-150 Lightning accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in the mid-4-second range with the extended-range battery, making it the fastest-accelerating F-150 yet.

    Hi All:

I will be driving to the 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning Short Lead in San Antonio, Texas starting tomorrow morning. The 1,325-mile journey in a Prius Prime is nothing by comparison to the online buzz the Lightning has and is receiving by comparison. I do hope to knock out a charging profile but sometimes, OEMs are just so protective of their early edition production intent vehicles they will not give them up for a few hours of overnight testing as was the case with both the bZ4X and Solterra. I will be asking anyway however.

    Hi All:

While I have not seen any presentation or driven the all-new F-150 Lightning since I arrived early this afternoon, I overheard some cool things...

    2023 Ford F-150 Lightning

    1. When you place the truck in either an Eco, Normal or Performance - I am not sure what Ford exactly names these settings yet - mode, when rebooting the truck on the next drive, it asks if you would like to retain that setting. Great idea!

    2. When you plug in a laptop or power tool in one of the many outlets in the frunk, when you reboot the truck to drive to your next destination, a display states that one of the charge ports is open in the frunk and would you like to charge whatever is plugged in. Another great idea!

    Hi All:

I am not sure where but someone asked me about gasoline and diesel fueled F-150 sales in Europe. I spoke with the Director of Corporate Communications Europe moments ago and he said, "On paper 0 but there are some commercial tax credit schemes where an import into Belgium ..." and one other far northern European country - Finland maybe ??? - "where the F-150 is essentially free after the tax scheme." Go figure and there are probably 1,000 std. F-150s in Europe right now. Fuel is easily double and in some cases trip ours so it would not be a smart move until the electric Lightning arrives.

I also asked if there were plans to light up the board with F-150 Lightning sales in Europe. He said, "If we could get them, we would." Chip supply has its foot on Ford's throat and is not letting up anytime soon. :(

    Hi All:

From the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning launch and first drive.

A 6,000 lb plus full size truck setup to tow a 9,500 lb trailer.

1.7 mi/KWh over 85% slow speed country roads and 15% highway while towing.

The range is probably going to be less than half its rating when towing near max spec at highway speeds. The good news however is that there is so much torque that launches are uneventful. No engine rev up and slow tranny upshifts while struggling to being it up to speed...

For the consumer, it is still non-existent as orders well into the 250K range plus is going to be filled only when chips are available and they are not yet.

    Hi All:

I have been wondering how Ford was going to reach 600k BEVs by 2023 per statements from Farley in NAPA a few months ago. Here is how they are going to attempt to do it.

Ford’s New Battery Capacity Plan, Raw Material Details to Scale EVs; On Track To Ramp To 600k Run Rate By ’23 And 2 Million + By 2026!

Ford announced a series of initiatives for sourcing battery capacity and raw materials that light a clear path to reach its targeted annual run rate of 600,000 electric vehicles by late 2023 and more than 2 million by the end of 2026.

The company detailed its global vehicle portfolio plans supporting these production goals as part of its Ford+ plan. Ford expects a compound annual growth rate for EVs to exceed 90% through 2026, more than double forecasted global industry growth.

Ford plans to invest over $50 billion in EVs through 2026, targeting total company adjusted EBIT margins of 10% and 8% EBIT margins for EVs by 2026.

As Ford creates a new EV supply chain that upholds its commitments to sustainability and human rights, the company continues to plan for more than half its global production to be EVs by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality globally no later than 2050.

Ford plans to reach a 600,000 global EV run rate by late 2023 with the following EVs:
    • 270,000 Mustang Mach-Es for North America, Europe and China
    • 150,000 F-150 Lightnings for North America
    • 150,000 Transit EVs for North America and Europe
    • 30,000 units of an all-new SUV for Europe, whose run rate will significantly ramp in 2024
Ford is adding lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cell chemistry to its portfolio. This creates even more capacity for high-demand products and provides customers many years of operation with minimal range loss. It also reduces the reliance on scarce critical minerals such as nickel and, at current costs, brings a 10 to 15% bill of material savings for Ford versus NCM batteries.

Ford announced that Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Ltd. (CATL) will provide full LFP battery packs for Mustang Mach-E models for North America starting next year as well as F-150 Lightnings in early 2024. Ford’s EV architecture flexibility allows efficient incorporation of CATL’s prismatic LFP cell-to-pack technology, delivering incremental capacity quickly to scale and meet customer demand.

Ford also is leveraging its long-standing connection with LG Energy Solution (LGES) and its strategic relationship with SK On to meet its battery capacity target for late 2023.

Long-time supplier LGES has scaled quickly and doubled its capacity at its Wroclaw, Poland, facility to support incremental NCM cell production for Mustang Mach-E and E-Transit models.

Plus, SK On has installed capacity to support the scaling of Ford’s high-volume F-150 Lightning and E-Transits through late 2023 – scaling NCM cell production beyond earlier-planned levels from its Atlanta facility and providing new battery cell capacity from its Hungary operation.

Driving to 2 million EVs by late 2026

Ford is building on agreements tied to its 600,000 run rate milestone and is taking them even further. The company now has sourced approximately 70% of the battery cell capacity it needs to support an annual global run rate of more than 2 million EVs by late 2026!

Ford and CATL – the world’s largest battery producer – have signed a separate non-binding MOU to explore a cooperation for supplying batteries in Ford’s markets across China, Europe and North America.

Ford also announced it plans to localize and use 40 GWh of LFP capacity in North America starting in 2026.

The company intends to use this additional capacity to complement three previously announced battery plants in Kentucky and Tennessee that are part of the BlueOval SK joint venture between Ford and SK On, which was officially formed last week. Ford has signed an additional MOU with SK On as well as Koç Holdings to create a joint venture in Turkey for expanded battery capacity there.

To support its joint ventures, Ford is direct-sourcing battery cell raw materials as well.

Today, the company announced it is working with major mining collaborators and has sourced most of the nickel needed through 2026 and beyond. Ford has signed non-binding MOUs with:

Vale Canada Ltd.: To explore potential opportunities across the EV value chain.

PT Vale Indonesia and Huayou Cobalt: For exploring a three-way nickel processing project and, separately, an off-take agreement with Huayou that collectively will provide Ford with rights to the equivalent of 84 kilotons per annum (ktpa) of nickel.

BHP: For nickel supply from BHP's Nickel West operations in Australia. The targeted multi-year agreement could start as early as 2025 and may involve additional commodities over time.

Ford also has locked several key lithium contracts. Beyond the recently announced key asset in Western Australia secured through Liontown Resources, Ford also has signed a non-binding MOU with Rio Tinto, exploring a significant lithium off-take agreement from its Rincon project in Argentina. This is part of a multi-metal MOU that leverages the scale of Ford’s aluminum business and includes a potential opportunity on copper.

Ford also continues working to localize processing of key battery materials in North America. To that end, the company is announcing:

EcoPro BM and SK On: Have signed a non-binding Letter of Intent with Ford to establish a cathode production facility in North America.

ioneer: Has signed a binding off-take agreement with Ford for lithium carbonate from ioneer’s Rhyolite Ridge project in Nevada to support EV production beyond 2025.

Compass Minerals: Has signed a non-binding MOU for lithium hydroxide and lithium carbonate from its Utah operations on the Great Salt Lake.

Syrah Resources and SK On: Have signed a non-binding MOU to secure off-take for natural graphite from its processing site in Vidalia, Louisiana.

    EV Demand

As Ford reinvents its new EV supply chain, consumer praise rolls in for its first-generation EVs already in-market while demand signals among potential EV buyers continue strengthening.

For the first time, the majority of consumers who intend to buy a car in the next two years say they will choose an EV or hybrid vehicle – up 11% from last year and 22% from 2020, according to research published by EY. Most of that increase is for full EVs.

Among commercial owners who don’t already deploy EVs, 60% of U.S. fleet managers said in a Ford Pro survey they plan to add EVs to their operations within two years.

Market reaction to F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E is strong, bringing all-new customers to Ford. Mustang Mach-E shares the top spot in its segment for in-market vehicle shoppers’ favorable opinion, according to a Q1 Ford study, while F-150 Lightning’s favorable opinion was second only to the F-150 powered by an internal combustion engine.

To further stimulate demand, Ford is working to make EVs accessible to millions, addressing barriers to entry such as charging, cost and improving the EV customer purchase experience.
