    The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning is priced from $39,974 to $90k while offering up to 300-miles of all-electric range (AER) with the extended-range battery. The smaller standard-range battery equipped Lightning is targeting 230 miles of AER.

    Ford currently produces the number one selling vehicle lineup (F-Series) in America and it has held that bestselling title accolade for 44 straight years! Tonight, they made a historic turn for the betterment of not just America but the world with the introduction of the all-electric Lightning.

    The all-new F-150 Lightning is a pickup like no other as it is a fully capable yet eerily silent all-electric with 563 hp and 775 lb.-ft. of torque that capable of taking the full-sized 6-spassenger truck to 60 in under 4.5 seconds! This same truck can also power your home in limited capacity for days on end if called upon to do so.

    From its instant electric torque to towing, seamless connectivity to software updates, plus power for your home, a power frunk – the all-new F-150 Lightning is a driving and ownership experience in the history of the automobile.

    2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Details

    The F-150 Lightning delivers a new experience at a starting price on par with today’s similarly configured F-150 trucks. The electric platform can power an entire home and a massive lockable frunk with power and charging capabilities to spare. Ford will deploy standard over-the-air software updates – called Ford Power-Up – to improve the technology experience, add new features and fix issues without trips to the dealership.

    The commercial-oriented entry model starts at $39,974 MSRP before any federal or state tax credits, while the mid-series XLT model starts at $52,974.

    The F-150 Lightning can reach 60 in the mid-4-second range when equipped with an extended-range battery, Ford Is targeting a payload of 2,000 pounds and a max tow cap of 10,000 pounds. Expect half the range or less when at max tow cap. Like all electrics, the low center of gravity provides much lower pitch, yaw, and roll rates.

    2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Smart and Connected

    The F-150 Lightning will arrive with the optional advanced driving assist functionality called Ford Co-Pilot360. It will also arrive with BlueCruise which allows hands-free driving on more than 100,000 miles of pre-qualified divided highways in the U.S. and Canada.

    Another feature is an available Onboard Scales, which uses the truck’s sensors to estimate payload and tell customers how much they’re hauling. And since payload can impact range, Onboard Scales is integrated with Intelligent Range to help ensure F-150 Lightning provides its drivers with an accurate estimate of range left. F-150 Lightning debuts available Pro Trailer Hitch Assist, which automatically controls steering, throttle and brake inputs to make hitching trailers even easier.

    Also making its F-Series debut is available Phone As A Key. When activated, this allows customers to lock, unlock and start their truck without taking their phone out of their pocket or using a key fob.

    All these features and more can get even better over time with Ford Power-Up software updates that will be designed to improve the performance of F-150 Lightning, deliver quality upgrades, update existing features and add all-new functions and capabilities.

    Making its truck debut on F-150 Lightning in the Lariat and Platinum series is SYNC 4A through a 15.5-inch portrait mounted touch screen. SYNC 4A employs natural voice control, cloud-connected navigation and wireless access to your favorite services including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, integrated Amazon Alexa and SYNC AppLink apps.

    Power for Home

    The F-150 Lightning will be offered with the optional Ford Intelligent Backup Power, turning your truck into the ultimate power source for your home. With the ability to offload 9.6 kW of power, Ford Intelligent Backup Power keeps the lights on during an outage while providing security by powering home appliances, security systems and more.

    With Ford Intelligent Backup Power attached through the optional 80-amp Ford Charge Station Pro and home management system, the F-150 Lightning can automatically transfer power from a dead grid to power your house. Once power is restored, the truck and Ford Charge Station Pro can automatically transfer back to charging its battery. Based on an average 30kWh of use per day, F-150 Lightning with extended-range battery provides full-home power for up to three days, or as long as 10 days if power is rationed, with results varying based on energy usage.

    In the future, Ford will introduce Ford Intelligent Power, which can use the truck to power homes during high-cost, peak-energy hours while taking advantage of low-cost overnight rates to charge the vehicle in time for your morning drive. This can help save money on electricity that powers your vehicle and home while also taking pressure off the grid in peak usage times. This is really cool!!!

    Ford is also teaming up with the nation's leading solar company, Sunrun, to facilitate easy installation of the 80-amp Ford Charge Station Pro and home integration system. Through this collaboration, customers will also have the opportunity to install solar energy on their home, enabling them to power their household with clean, affordable energy and charge their F-150 Lightning with the power of the sun.

    Power for the home is just the beginning. With enhanced Pro Power Onboard, customers can take advantage of built-in electrical outlets to directly power a variety of tools, electronics and appliances away from home. Standard on base trims is 2.4 kW of power with the option for more, while Lariat and Platinum series come standard with 9.6 kW of power – a combination of up to 2.4 kW available through the frunk and up to 7.2 kW through outlets in the cab and bed.

    Smart features make power management easier than ever. Customers receive a FordPass notification if their truck’s battery falls below one-third of its total range, and they can even set the truck to stop using Pro Power Onboard if the battery level approaches the distance to the nearest charging station.



    Under the hood is a mega power frunk offering secure, lockable and easily accessible by a powered open and close system cargo volume of 14 cu. ft. and 400 pounds of payload.

    This water-resistant front cargo storage is equipped with four electrical outlets, two USB chargers and a drainable floor that can double as a food and beverage container. It can easily power a mobile work site or an epic tailgate. With 2.4 kW of power, there’s enough capability to plug in power tools, TVs, laptops, speakers, crock pots and more.

    Ford’s “Built Ford Tough” Comes Standard

    The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning goes through the same tortuous Built Ford Tough testing as all F-Series trucks. The military-grade aluminum alloy body and upgraded frame support the advanced battery, while the first F-Series independent rear suspension and low center of gravity help improve isolation from the road, provide a more stable ride and reduce steering roll – while maintaining the durability and reliability expected from F-150.

    F-150 Lightning 4x4 features four selectable drive modes: Normal, Sport, Off Road and Tow/Haul. Rugged underbody protection keeps the battery protected with metal skid plates shielding both the battery and inboard motors from terrain and road debris. The battery itself is secured inside waterproof casing surrounded by crash-absorption protection and has been tested at temperatures as extreme as minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure Lightning can perform when needed most.

    Rigorous endurance testing included running the truck through Iowa Hill, Calif., where it towed massive trailers for long durations up and down steep inclines. As a result, F-150 Lightning sports a state-of-the-art liquid cooling system and powertrain layout that expertly manages heat distribution across the vehicle. Improved cooling systems and components ensure the truck can thrive even in the toughest driving ordeals.

    Home Charging

    Ford will offer a massive 240V/80A 19.2 kW charge station as standard equipment! This system takes advantage of the only dual onboard charging system on an electric truck in the industry for even faster home charging. With this, F-150 Lightning adds an average range of 30 miles per charging hour, fully charging an extended-range truck from 15-100 percent in eight hours.

    On the road, customers have seamless access to Electrify America’s charging network with FordPass. On a 150-kilowatt DC fast charger, extended-range F-150 Lightning is targeted to get up to 54 miles of range in 10 minutes and charge from 15-80 percent in about 41 minutes. The charging profile appears on paper to be a bit higher than the MachE when attached to a 150 to 350 kW CCS DCFC.

    The trucks Intelligent Range accurately calculates range while factoring in weather, traffic, payload, towing weights and more. Cloud-connected navigation on SYNC 4 also identifies public charging locations and prompts owners to charge at convenient points on each drive.

    The F-150 Lightning is after all an F-Series truck. Key elements include available signature LED light bars that run across the front and rear, plus three new grille designs with a new look to a familiar face while maintaining Built Ford Tough authenticity.

    F-150 Lightning is the most aerodynamic F-150 ever, with improvements like newly shaped running boards, a sculpted hood to reduce drag, and grilles that replace air intake holes with a smoother, textured surface. Even more functional design delivers available enhanced 360-degree Zone Lighting, which can light up a specific zone or the entire area around the vehicle.

    And F-150 Lightning makes no compromises on space, maintaining the same cab and bed dimensions as its gas counterpart, so it remains capable of accommodating thousands of accessories already available. The available fold-out Interior Work Surface makes working inside the vehicle even easier and more productive, while available Max Recline Seats offer nearly 180-degrees of recline to help customers recharge as needed.

    The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning will be rolling out of the historic Ford Rouge plant in Detroit by late spring of next year and reach 2,300 EV-certified Ford dealers across the country in four trims and two battery options.

    Hi All:

    I would not want to be involved in marketing the 22 Tesla CyberTruck now that the all-new 22 F-150 Lightning has been introduced. Maybe some of the Tesla faithful will jump in with a Model S filled with cash but the general public is going to buy the Ford. At least you would know they beat the $**t out of it to make sure it was going to work when the going gets tough vs the Tesla truck.

    After driving the MachE just a few weeks ago, the vehicle felt far less gimmicky than a 3/Y and the panel gaps, panel alignment, and especially the paint quality stood out over anything in the Tesla lineup.

    No doubt this will be huge. Ford has knocked out of the park. Having the Prez race it around the track was good free publicity, and I loved the Fordian Slip of him "accidentally" disclosing the 4.4 sec 0-60 time. As if they didn't want that info to leak out.

    From what I'm hearing in the other car media, the cheapest model actually available to consumers may be the $55k XLT? In other words, the $42k Work Truck may be fleet-only. Too bad for us cheapskates. Oh wait, I'd never buy an F-150 new or used, because I'm too cheap (and today's 36" high pickup beds are only suited for people whose hired hands do all the work loading the truck) so never mind. But they'll sell plenty of 'em to people who need to haul sheet goods from Home Depot three times a year.

    C&D has a story today betting that it the range won't hit 100 miles pulling a trailer though. And while most people won't pull big trailers, some will (and a LOT of my fellow Minnesotans pull boats more than 100-mile distances at least twice a year). In any event, I do think this is the perfect application for an EREV: maybe a 30-40kWh for the electric motors, and a small EcoBoost ICE to act as a series generator (Honda hybrid style) to keep it from draining the pack too fast while towing.

    I just read that through last night or 24-hours into the launch reservation program, Ford has accumulated more than 20,000 pre-orders at $100 a pop.

    Stated that the Lightning will travel 300miles AND also said that Lightning will be able to haul 10,000 lb trailer up very steep grades. What will Lightning’s range be when hauling heavy loads on steep mountain grades? Limited to 50+....100 miles of travel? Yes....No?
    Hope they’ll be able to get to the top of mountain passes, so they can charge on the downslopes.....& hope there isn’t another mountain pass to ascend again. Where’s the EV charging station ahead?
    But, think how safe they will be, not to have to rely on friction brakes & compression to reduce momentum on the downslopes.....specially if the trailer can also regenerate electric energy. That would apply to commercial EV semis & trailers, too. Run-away ramps may be a thing of the past....if EV energy recovery systems are bulletproof. Wow!!

    The first pre-production F-150 Lightning trucks roll off Ford’s new Rouge Electric Vehicle Center and demand soars for the all-electric truck. Ford stated they will increase investment and add jobs to boost production.


    Ford is investing an additional $250 million and adding 450 more direct jobs across the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center, Van Dyke Electric Powertrain Center and Rawsonville Components Plant. The investment and added jobs will help increase production capacity to 80,000 trucks a year.

    F-150 Lightning, with a starting MSRP of $40,000 (small battery) and targeted EPA-estimated driving range of 300 miles with the extended range battery, is aimed at the heart of the U.S. auto market. Ford has taken more than 150,000 reservations for the trucks to date.

    Ford confirmed construction of the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center a year ago as part of an initial $700 million investment in the historic Ford Rouge Center, creating a manufacturing home for the F-150 Lightning. Now Ford’s pre-production F-150 Lightning trucks are leaving the factory for real-world testing, with the truck available to customers next spring.

    Ford’s $250 million additional investment will create 450 additional hourly direct jobs, with most of those workers assembling the F-150 Lightning at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center. Workers at Rawsonville Components Plant will assemble the batteries and Van Dyke Electric Powertrain Center will increase its capacity to supply electric motors and electric transaxles for the F-150 Lightning.

    This is the latest in Ford’s continuing investment in Michigan. Ford has invested $7.7 billion in the state and created and retained 7,000 Michigan jobs since 2016, including bringing the new Bronco SUV and Ranger pickup production to Michigan, refurbishing Michigan Central Station, developing a new Ford Research and Engineering Campus in Dearborn, creating Ford’s Ion Park in Romulus and more. Michigan has been the home of Ford since its founding in 1903 and these sites represent a growing network across southeast Michigan that will support the next generation of Ford’s battery electric, connected and autonomous vehicles.

    The Rouge Electric Vehicle Center is in the Ford Rouge Center, which sets the benchmark for sustainable automotive assembly. This new center supports Ford’s vision of sustainable production as a zero waste-to-landfill site.

    The center uses natural lighting, as well as LED lighting and the primary forklift fleet will use hydrogen fuel cells with a zero-emission profile. The Rouge Electric Vehicle Center is built on the site of the old Dearborn Assembly Plant, using its recycled foundation and construction materials.

    While everyone appears to be indicating that the F-150 is delayed until Spring, from its initial release this past week, it was touted with to be rolling out of the historic Ford Rouge plant in Detroit by late spring of next year and reach 2,300 EV-certified Ford dealers across the country in four trims and two battery options.

    In other words, there is nothing new here to report.

    Ford F-150 Lightning Testing in Extreme Cold

    This winter, Ford engineers spent two weeks in the heart of Alaska in minus 30-degree F temps to continue fine-tuning the F-150 Lightning pickup’s performance on low-traction surfaces like snow and ice, and in extreme cold to give customers maximum confidence.

    Formally called low-mu testing, this type of powertrain evaluation looks at how the all-electric powertrain adjusts power delivery to the wheels on low-traction surfaces – usually snow and ice in extremely cold temperatures. And what better place to test than at a restricted military base in Alaska?

    Ford engineers drove a fleet of six F-150 Lightning pre-production units on various types of wintery surfaces such as loose snow, packed-groomed snow, complete ice, half ice-half concrete surfaces and more in the freezing temperatures. The F-150 Lightning pickup can sense wheel slip and adjust power to the wheels within milliseconds, benefiting from the quick responses of the all-electric powertrain.
    F-150 Lightning offers stability in slick conditions thanks to benefits attributed to its all-electric powertrain:
    • Standard dual motors front and rear
    • Standard always-on 4x4
    • Quick torque delivery
    • Standard electronic-locking rear differential
    • Selectable drive modes
    • Low center of gravity for even more confident handling
    Engineers are able to adjust the calibration in real-time while testing, helping to maximize efficiency during the 12-hour test days. In addition to Alaska, the F-150 Lightning powertrain team has conducted low-mu testing in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Borrego Springs, Johnson Valley, and at Ford’s Michigan Proving Grounds near Romeo, just one of many elements of the robust Built Ford Tough endurance regime the F-150 Lightning goes through.

    Ford F-150 Lightning Final EPA Range Results Released

    Extended Range battery F-150 Lightning customers will benefit from an increase in range ahead of launch this spring. The all-new, all-electric F-150 Lightning has completed final EPA testing. F-150 Lightning XLT and Lariat trims with the extended range battery take you an EPA-estimated range of 320 miles while the F-150 Lightning Platinum has an EPA-estimated range of 300 miles. Fleet customers have the option to purchase the extended range battery on Lightning Pro and that has an EPA-estimated range of 320 miles.

    Ford Unveils America’s First Electric Pickup Truck for Police

    Ford’s Electrification focus carries on into the Civilian Police space despite severe industry supply constraints. This time, it is the first electric pickup truck purpose-built for police in the form of the F-150 Lightning Pro Special Service Vehicle (SSV).

    According to the company, Ford Pro customers include more than 12,000 police departments nationwide and its police vehicle lineup outsells all other police vehicles combined. The company attributes this success and customer loyalty to the automaker’s close collaboration with its customers, specifically the Ford Police Advisory Board.

    An All Electric Truck Purpose-built for Police Use

    The Lightning Pro SSV carry’s the consumer Lightning’s power and performance mantle and adds Ford Pro’s real-time software and support.

    The F-150 Lightning Pro SSV is designed for not just pursuits but also accident or crime scene assistance or by allowing departments to tow a boat or trailer. The F-150 Police Responder trim includes the following features:
    • Police-grade heavy-duty cloth seats with reduced bolsters to help holstered officers enter and exit the vehicle more easily <-- Hmmm, that would be great for the consumer too! ;)
    • Built-in steel intrusion plates in the front seatbacks.
    • Available red/blue, amber/white roof-mounted LED warning beacons
    • An upfit-friendly reinforced instrument panel top tray for easy mounting of police equipment
    • Easy-to-clean vinyl rear seats and vinyl flooring
    Standard features include a 12” driver and 12” landscape center stack, Power Frunk with 14.1 cu ft of lockable cargo space, 452 hp, 775 lb.-ft. of torque, 7,700-pound towing cap and 2,235 max payload with a standard-range battery, and 580 hp, 775 lb.-ft. of torque, and 10,000-pound tow cap with the extended-range battery.

    Ford F-150 Lightning Deliveries Reach All 50 U.S. States!

    Remember the days when a desirable BEV or PHEV was only available in just the ZEV states or a particular region so they could earn credits or benefits from the ZEV states? Even today that practice continues. Toyota Prius PHEV anyone? Ford just broke that model into a million pieces with a big “F” you to industry’s past practice. In just two months of sales, Ford has delivered their super-hot all-electric F-150 Lightning pickup trucks to customers in all 50 states. That includes not only the 48 contiguous but also Alaska and Hawaii!

    According to Ford, Texas – the truck capital of America – and California – the electric vehicle capital of America – lead the way with the highest number of F-150 Lightning deliveries through late July.

    New owners have discovered like we all have that the F-150 Lightning can handle most of ones needs outside of huge mass towing for range. Saying that, Ford highlighted someone that does tows a fishing boat in Alaska of all places! ;)

    Recently, he helped his neighbor’s wife, who was away from home with only six miles of charge left on her electric sedan’s battery. Gol connected his F-150 Lightning with the sedan’s charging adapter and provided enough energy to safely get her back home. ;)

    Ford also stated that nearly 80 percent of the “early” reservation holders said in a survey that F-150 Lightning will be the first full EV in their household.

    Ford has sold 4,469 F-150 Lightning electric trucks in the US and Canada (YTD) through June 31st.

    Electrify America Provides F-150 Lightning Owners 250 KWh of Free DCFC

    Owners of Ford’s F-150 Lightning will receive 250 KWhs of complimentary charging through FordPass Rewards at Electrify America DCFCers. This jut announced benefit is available solely to F-150 Lightning retail customers.

    Using Electrify America’s DCFCers, the F-150 Lightning with the extended-range battery can add up to 54 miles of range in 10 minutes and can achieve a 15 percent to 80 percent charge in 41 minutes.

    Ford’s F-150 Lightning Reservations reached nearly 200,000 ahead of order banks opening at the start of the year. Through July, 4,469 F-150 Lightnings have been sold across all 50 states. This new F-150 Lightning charging agreement matches Mustang Mach-E owners offer.

    Electrify America expects to have more than 1,800 total charging stations with over 10,000 chargers in the United States and Canada by 2026. During this period, the company will be expanding to 49 states and the District of Columbia. Missing will be North Dakota. I have been watching the buildout far to closely.
