2022 Kia EV6 Intro on Times Square

Times Square NYC, NY -- Kia introduced its upcoming all-new, dedicated, all-electric flagship on Times Square with specs that make an auto enthusiasts heart sing! The all-new 2022 Kia EV6 was brought to light under Kia’s U.S. ‘Plan S’ strategy that will deliver 11 all-new electrified models across the world by 2026.

From the Hyundai and Kia's EV Future Begins With E-GMP story, E-GMP maximizes development efficiency and enables the brands to expand their dedicated EV portfolio across multiple vehicle segments – sedans, CUVs, SUVs – in a short time and with minimal complexity. The architecture provides an electric platform with a long wheelbase and a lot of passenger and cargo volume.

    2022 Kia EV6

In particular, the 2022 Kia EV6s E-GMP underpinnings provides owners with 102 cu. ft. of passenger volume and 27.7/53.5 cu. ft. of cargo room cargo volume with the second-row seats up/down respectively due in part to its lengthy 114.2-inch wheelbase. This compares very favorably to the imho, current best EV available right now, the 2021 Ford Mustang MachE with its own 101 cu. ft. of passenger volume and 29.7/59.7 cu. ft. of cargo volume with the second-row seats up/down respectively.

The EV platform provides quick acceleration, AWD capability, and extremely fast charging times. Kia is indicating the EV6 will achieve a fully realized 300-miles of all-electric range (AER), include vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, and its interior will be designed around sustainable materials throughout the cabin. The EV6 will also offers a wide array of advanced driver assistance systems, connectivity, and safety.

The first EV6 models are expected to go on sale in early 2022 in all 50 states with the GT arriving in late 2022.
    2022 Kia EV6 First Edition

In a first for the brand, Kia will offer a special EV6 First Edition available by advanced reservation at Kia.com starting June 3. Limited to just 1,500 units, the EV6 First Edition offers the styling of the standard design, which includes exterior details such as black wheel arches in a fully loaded package. The Augmented Reality (AR) Head-Up Display, Remote Smart Parking Assist, wide sunroof, 20” wheels, premium 14-speaker Meridian audio system and a two-year subscription to SiriusXM are among the upgrades in the EV6 First Edition, along with dual-motor AWD and a large 77.4 kWh battery.

    Kia’s ‘Opposites United’ EV6 Design

Penned at Kia’s three design studios in Seoul, Frankfurt and Irvine, California, the EV6 CUV is a global collaboration of Kia design studios inspired by a new philosophy called ‘Opposites United.’ Key design elements include:
    • “Digital Tiger” grille form serves as Kia’s new tiger nose design
    • Headlamps offer sequential light patterns
    • Flush exterior door handles
    • High rear deck is the spoiler
    • Cross-car rear light cluster
    • Wheel sizes from 19 to 21-inches
Using the E-GMP platform provides a number of highlights including the following:
    • RWD with AWD Option
    • Body structure using 75 percent high-strength steel (HSS) and ultra-high strength steel (UHSS)
    • Five-link independent rear suspension
    • Integrated drive axle (IDA) combines wheel bearings with the drive shaft to save weight
    • A long wheelbase and short overhangs maximize interior volume
    • Underfloor mounted battery provides a low center of gravity
The Battery Tech Underpinning the all-new 2022 Kia EV6

The EV6 uses an energy-dense Nickel-Cobalt-Manganese (80/10/10) battery pack available in two sizes: 58.0 kWh and 77.4 kWh. The low-mounted, underfloor pack delivers energy to both RWD and AWD electric motor layouts with varying horsepower at the front and rear axles.

The EV6 offers up to 576 horsepower in AWD configuration while providing up to 300-miles of AER in RWD format, both using the 77.4 kWh usable battery.

The EV6 will incorporate the World’s first patented multi-charging system supporting 400v and 800v DC charging, which works on DC chargers from 50kW to 350kW. The 800v DC fast charging from a 350-kW charger allows 68.8 miles of range in less than 5 minutes and up to 210-miles (10-to-80 percent) in under 18 minutes in total!

If you are charging from home on a 9.6 kW L2, 10-to-100 percent SOC can be accomplished in 7 hours, 10 minutes for the larger 77.4 kWh battery versions.

The Kia EV6 will also offer Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality to power everything from computers to home improvement projects to camping and tailgating without being plugged in. Electricity flows from the high-energy battery to an Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU), providing 1.9 kW of power to electrical appliances, devices, tools and recreational equipment.

350kW charging. Amazing. I'm still on 3.3kW at home.

With so many EVs coming, and promising to be primary vehicles and not just commuters, where's the rural charging infrastructure? I hope some enterprising small-town store proprietors start stepping up. Of the many places I go on road trips, only a couple have any chargers whatsoever. But every little town has enough juice running down the main drag of town to support a few megawatts of charging, including a few 350kW draws. Just need someone with the vision to tap into it.

If I owned a mini mart, gas station or restaurant (especially if I were in a small town), anywhere in America, almost guaranteed there's at least an 11kV and maybe larger distribution line running past my front door. I'd be on the phone yesterday to my power company about upgrading my service to pull a couple of megawatts - and on my second phone line with ChargePoint at the same time, ordering a few chargers. Gas stations make their money inside the store, not at the pumps. The goal is to get people in the door and spend $10 a pop on sundries - or $30 for a meal while their EV charges. Why is no one doing this? Why does no one see this opportunity?

    Hi Dan:

Fortunately an 11 kW charger can be installed in just about every home in America. On the flipside, most retailers want to collect the charging cost(s) and with it comes the sky high charges many of us have experienced on low power L2's from the likes of ChargePoint, EVGo, and Blink in the past. That second part appears to be changing as many 7.2 KW EVGo chargers in my area are charging just $0.025/min with the retailer absorbing the expense knowing the BEV/PHEV owner will be purchasing goods in said retailer(s).

The free 3.3 KW Volta's come to mind as well but they are painfully slow and can add more frustration than they are worth for many. The 2-hours connection time does not even top off my Prius Prime. There is another problem with the Volta's since they usually have 2 to 4 cords and many times, there is a Tesla, Bolt, and Leaf plugged into them charging at a whopping 3.3 KW.

    2021 Porsche Taycan

At an Electrify America 350 KW DCFC in Weatherford, OK.

On the high power side of the equation, I just crossed the country in the 21 Porsche Taycan for the fourth time in as many months with the last trek setting a GWR. It was completed using 350 KWs most of the way across outside a few that underperformed or were unavailable. That drive covered 2,843.5 miles on 522 KWh and was completed for just $76.82! That did not include the additional 80 kWh I would have had to add in NYC to bring me back to 100% SOC that I started with in LA.

    Hi All:

The all-new Kia EV6 and Hyundai IONIQ 5 have taken top spot at the first-ever ‘Best Cars of the Year’ 2021/2022 Awards. The joint world champions were singled out for quality, innovation, design and state-of-the-art tech by a judging panel that features global industry leaders from across the automotive spectrum. Both the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Kia EV6 claimed the title of the ‘Best Cars of the Year’ 2021/2022 by beating new models from established premium brands, including the Audi e-tron, Ford Mustang Mach-e and Porsche Taycan. Each of the top ten places was occupied by a different brand covering six countries spread across the world’s top three car producing continents – Asia, Europe and North America.

    2022 Kia EV6

This latest industry honor is further evidence that HMG’s sustainable mobility vision is being realized, with Hyundai and Kia becoming recognized leaders in this field.

The Kia EV6 shares the Group’s pioneering E-GMP architecture, but its scalable and modular form permits freedom in the external design that clearly distinguishes the Hyundai and Kia models from each other. As the E-GMP has been developed specifically for EVs, no engine or driveshaft is taking up space, giving the EV6 fluid body lines and a more sleek and sporty appearance than its Hyundai sibling, with a ride to match. EV6 has already won multiple international accolades since its European launch during the second half of 2021, with its visionary design, state-of-the-art connected tech user experience, 800V ultra-fast charging and sporty, dynamic performance driving characteristics all attracting great acclaim.

The 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 was launched in late 2021 as the first model in the company’s IONIQ dedicated battery electric vehicle (BEV) line-up brand. IONIQ 5’s modern take on retro design includes Hyundai’s first clamshell hood and eye-catching V-shaped positioning lamps. The front and rear forms of the vehicle merge together at its doors to illustrate the ‘Parametric Dynamics’ design ethos. By being based on the E-GMP architecture, the fully electric CUV has generous interior proportions thanks to the 118.1 in wheelbase with its short overhangs front and rear. Such a combination delivers exceptional interior space, dynamic performance, ultra-fast charging and an optimal in-car experience, all of which adds to the IONIQ 5’s universal appeal.

The ‘Best Cars of the Year’ Awards were formed to produce an unaffiliated, unique and totally democratic view of the ‘best’ vehicles on offer around the world. The judging panel was curated from leaders in the automotive industry, bringing together a diverse background that incorporates designers, engineers, motorsport pioneers, acclaimed journalists, broadcasters and media professionals alongside outstanding vehicle retailers, automotive consultants, major event organizers and real-world car buyers. This combination of unmatched knowledge, rich experience and in-depth know-how has helped to generate an authentic, unbiased view of the ‘best’ cars available.

As the reigning joint world champions, the Kia EV6 and Hyundai IONIQ 5 are scheduled to be the two star attractions at the ‘Best Cars of the Year’ stand at the British Motor Show from August 18-21 at the Farnborough International Exhibition and Conference Centre. This will also mark the beginning of the selection, evaluation, test drive and voting process for the Best Cars of the Year 2022/23 awards.

    Hi All:

While at the 2022 Chicago Auto Show yesterday, I had the opportunity to compare the front to rear seating and head room between the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the 2022 Kia EV6.

Based on the same platforms, I expected the leg and knee room to be identical but that appears not to be the case. I adjusted the front seat and wheel to fit me as comfortably as possible and snapped the pic. I entered the rear seat and snapped the pic of knee room. I cannot explain the EV6s deficiency, but it is there. In addition, ingress and egress from the rear seat found the Ioniq 5 to be far more accommodative with another inch or so of headroom.

    2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 (left) - 2022 Kia EV6 (right)

I liked the Ioniq 5's interior seating and dash materials better while I liked the Kia EV6s driver and front passenger dash including display layout, wheel, controls, and center console better.

Moving to the published volumes, the EV6's profile has an aesthetic advantage in that the lower roof height and steeper rake through the rear hatch "looks" faster, but it also measurably cuts into interior cargo volume.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 Passenger/Cargo/Interior Volumes (cu. ft.)

Passenger volume - 106.5 cu. ft.
Luggage capacity, rear seats upright/folded - 27.2/59.3 cu. ft.
Total interior volume - 133.7 cu. ft.

Kia EV6 Passenger/Cargo/Interior Volumes (cu. ft.)

Passenger volume - 103.0 cu. ft.
Luggage capacity, rear seats upright/folded - 24.4/50.2 cu. ft.
Total interior volume - 127.4 cu. ft.

Kia EV6 Earns 2022 European Car of the Year

The all-new 2022 Kia EV6 has been named the 2022 Car of the Year in the European Car of the Year (COTY) awards. The all-electric compact CUV was voted the overall winner by a 61-strong jury consisting of respected motoring journalists from 23 European countries.

    2022 Kia EV6

The Kia EV6 was initially listed for consideration for the top award alongside over sixty models that launched during 2021. In November, the COTY jury whittled this longlist down to a seven-strong shortlist, six of which were electric vehicles (EVs), further demonstrating the growing importance of electric vehicles to consumers as society transitions towards a new mobility future.

From making the shortlist, the EV6 successfully fought off competition from the Hyundai IONIQ 5, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Škoda Enyaq iV, Cupra Born, Renault Mégane E-Tech and Peugeot 308 to earn the 2022 European Car of the Year.

    Dedicated EV Platform

The EV6 is Kia’s first dedicated EV to be based on the company’s Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). This architecture ensures the EV6 eliminates the many compromises faced by EVs that are created on platforms initially designed to accommodate internal combustion engine vehicles. As a result of its E-GMP underpinnings, the EV6 has a class-leading interior space, a highly impressive 310-mile (US) driving range and 800V ultra-fast charging capabilities that enables customers to carry out a 10 to 80 percent charge in just 18 minutes.

The EV6 was the first global model to incorporate Kia’s new design philosophy ‘Opposites United’ which takes inspiration from the contrasts found in nature and humanity. At the center of the design philosophy is a new visual identity evoking positive forces and natural energy, with contrasting combinations of sharp stylistic elements and sculptural shapes.

The EV6 is the first of seven dedicated EV models Kia plans to launch by 2026. The all-electric crossover will play a key role in the company’s plans to become a leading global sustainable mobility solutions provider.

    Hi All:

Here are some of the details for the 3-days I had a 2022 RWD Kia EV6...

First up, the RWD EV6s Speed vs Energy Economy.

Winds were calm and the temp was an unwavering 68 degrees F for the entire 2.5-hour period to record the speeds and energy economy data. With an EPA highway of 3.0 miles/KWh, the EPA highway crossover occurred at an excellent 80 mph using a straight line analysis, second only to the record setting Taycan's 84 mph. Indicated speed matched actual for all recorded speeds at 50, 55, 60, 65, and 70 mph.

Even on an EA 150, the EV6 was holding at 165+ KW through 70% SOC!

    21-minutes from 5 to 80% even on a slower EA 150. Excellent!

5 to 100% SOC took 44-minutes on the EA150. Maybe 40-minutes on an EA 350 KW.

With two Electrify America 350 KW chargers down and about 20-minutes of moving the EV6 between 3 chargers plus time on the phone, EA provided me with a $33.11 freebie. ;)

That 295 miles of range added at $0.43/KWh for non-plus members - $23.87 at $0.31/KWh for EA Member Plus as I am - would only purchase about 4-gallons of fuel at California's $6/gallon prices. Even a 40 mpg RAV4 HEV would have consumed almost 7.5 gallons and cost ~ $45 or almost twice as much to drive the same distance.

I drove the EV6 down to 5% again and charged at an EA 350 out near Corona, CA with some beautiful initial results but a mess as soon as I shut off A/C after 65% and the BMS said WTF and cut charging power to just 14KW. I have that on vid and will create a partial 5 to 65% charging profile curve when I pull the vid off the GoPro H9B.

Kia Is the Most Awarded Brand in the 2022 J.D. Power Automotive Performance, Execution, and Layout (APEAL) Study

[IMG] Kia’s EV6 ranked number one in the Compact SUV segment. Naturally. ;)

One of the most exciting EVs available today earns another accolade.

Kia earned three J.D. Power Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) awards, including one for the all-new EV6, Kia’s first dedicated EV and first step toward the brand’s transformative ‘Plan S’ global electrification strategy. The electric crossover took the top spot in the Compact SUV segment, while the Carnival MPV and K5 each won their respective segments. The announcement follows the Forte being crowned number one in the compact car segment in the J.D. Power Initial Quality Study.

The J.D. Power APEAL study measures new-vehicle owners’ overall satisfaction with their vehicles in the first 90 days of ownership. The study asks vehicle owners to consider 40 attributes divided into 10 experience groups. J.D. Power then aggregates the responses to generate an overall APEAL score on a 1,000-point scale.

    Hi All:

I was looking for the 2022 Kia EV6 Charging Profile video segments on my laptop forever. They were still on my GoPro 9.

You already know how fast it charged from 5 to 80% on the EA 150 in Oceanside, CA posted above. 165 KW at 68% and even at 80%, it was still allowing 133 KW. Amazing!

Below is how fast it charged from 5 to 68% on an EA 350 in Ontario, CA until the DCFC glitch occurred at the 02:21 mark. I slowed that portion of the charge down in the vid so you could see it for yourself. :(

Chip shortages, car shortages, production shortages………but no performance shortages, tho! Can’t let the rich, NOT have their toys. The rich tho, make sure THEIR chips have the shortest lives.

    • Oh my! A new “cheap” EV6! The cheapest EV6 last year was “only” $40,000 MORE than the last new car I bought. This year’s “cheap” EV6 is “only” $30,000 more than my last new car. I’m only 3 years away from affording an EV6…..that’s if they keep introducing a $10,000 cheaper EV6 for the next three years. Oh boy…..NOT!
