Bet if you put 6-7% over-sized diameter tires on your wheels, you could stop using that fudge factor.
Oh, yeah. They had Sibelius’s Symphony #2 on the radio. But, it was scheduled for 2or3am & I missed it. You really need to play somebody’s Symphony #2, while driving on scenic route #2. Just don’t let it by Beethoven’s Symphony #2.:D

Today in the Prius. 28 deg F in Northbrook , 30 in Elk Grove.
    17.4 miles , fcd = 60.6 x .943 = 57.1 MPG. Should be much better for
the 32.6 mile trip home this afternoon.

Today in the Honda , from Aurora to work in Elk Grove Village.
50 deg F in Naperville , 49 in Elk Grove.
    35.2 miles , fcd = 49.9 MPG.
Filled up at Exxon on Arlington Heights Road.
    87 E10 was $ 2.969 per gallon.
    Pump # 5 , 525.8 miles , 11.445 gal , fcd = 44.8 MPG.
I will try to do the next few fill-ups there and maybe I
    can find the fcd error.
    I suspect it's less than 2%.

I'm sure you know this, but not everyone would... you still used less gas going the shorter route with the slightly lower MPG.

    edit: math for the readership

    21.5 / 50.2 = 0.428 gal
    19.5 / 47.7 = 0.409 gal

^^ Only a nickle's worth of difference at US prices.

Thinking of the Mastercard (?) commercials... reduction in greenhouse gases ... priceless! :)

Yes, gasoline is too cheap, even with UK and European pricing, not that Gord or my European relatives would think so, but in the grand scheme of things...

Filled up the Camry today prior to our Easter weekend trip. Didn't want to have to think about how much gas might cost.

    Actual Gallons: 10.832

You're doing better than the fuelly average for that vehicle, so keep up the good work. Broken in yet? :)

I have a similar route choice going to the start location of a bike ride I join most Tuesday mornings, weather permitting.

Route #1: Mostly on a semi-busy 4-lane divided US highway, 18.0 miles, typical average true mpg of ~56. Looks almost like an Interstate, but has many short hills. Most traffic goes ~70 mph.
Route #2: Mostly lightly travelled county roads with some coastable hills, plus several more stop signs and stoplights. 19.5 miles. Typical average true mpg of ~62 if tailgaters don't worry me too much.

I used to take #2 because of the higher mpg, except when I was running late. (#1 is much quicker.) Now I mostly take #1, on the theory that the difference in mpg isn't worth the hidden cost (on battery and brake life, etc.) of the additional stops, besides the time difference.

I also sometimes used to take #2 the first 13 miles by car, and the remainder by bicycle.

    Tank is at 253.6 miles , fcd = 65.7 x .943 = 61.955 MPG.

I remember you bought it around 5k... some cars IMO don't really feel broken in until 10k or 20k in. My 85 Supra was like that.

My 89 Civic started to yield its best fuel economy after 100K.
Hmmmm....maybe that's when I slowed down a bit. That car would
sometimes cross entire states at 100 MPH.

Interesting! Well, it's probably because I was driving the whole tank, and not being at the dealership for it at all. Glad to see that the in-car computer was so spot on. Gives me hope to see the numbers I pull this weekend on a short notice trip. Only 300 miles.

it’s definitely a playoff between time, mpg, time of day, avoiding roadworks, etc. that decides which way I go to and from work!

    Nice, Gord!

So true. Roadwork and bumper to bumper traffic would take the wind out of my sails. RedylC94 was right about how small a difference whether in mL or monetarily, over that distance. Many prescious measures...

There is an Arlington Heights region, south of Arlington, Washington in northeastern lands along the Salish Sea (Puget Sound).
