The all-new 2021 Ford F-150 with the 3.5L PowerBoost Hybrid drivetrain offers owners up to 25 mpg combined! Wayne Gerdes – CleanMPG – Jan. 11, 2021 2021 Ford F-150 The all-new F-150 continues to evolve as the greatest Pickup ever built. Each generation improves incrementally with more power, more torque, more tow and payload capacity. New for the F-150 is the all-new and probably the most desirable attribute in any Ford truck to date is an all-new 25 mpg combined 3.5L PowerBoost hybrid drivetrain. That drivetrain also includes an onboard integrated power generator called Pro Power Onboard. Moving into the digital space, the all-new Ford now includes over-the-air updates. A fully boxed high-strength steel frame with a high-strength aluminum alloy body is the std. basis for Ford’s tow cap and payload dominance as it has been for years. For 2021, optional LED headlamps and taillamps, and available full-length extended power running boards with kick switch that provide better truck-side cargo box accessibility. The all-new F-150 includes improved active grille shutters, a new automatically deploying active air dam, and new cab and tailgate geometry to reduce drag and improve efficiency on every truck. Inside, the interior is completely redesigned with new materials and more storage. 2021 Ford F-150 Interior Notice the flat work space? On the infotainment front, the all-new F-150 can be equipped with an all-new 12” center screen – standard on XLT high series and above – with split screen for navigation, music and truck features. An 8” touch screen with rearview camera is standard on XL and XLT standard. An available new 12” digital cluster features a large information-on-demand area, along with truck-specific graphics and animations that respond to the all-new F-150’s selectable drive modes and can display off-roading data and turn-by-turn navigation. Two items I look forward to trying in the all-new F-150’s interior is the “Interior Work Surface” that provides a flat surface for laptops thanks to a console shifter that folds into the center console with the push of a button and this… Finally, someone is thinking about us road warriors who have found our vehicles the ultimate and sometimes only refuge whether for a winter storm road closure or simply stopping for a brief respite after many hours on the road. The Max Recline Seats available on King Ranch, Platinum and Limited models provide almost 180 degrees between seat bottoms and back while the bottom cushion rises to meet the back cushion and the upper back support rotating forward up to 10 degrees. 2021 Ford F-150 Max Recline Seats Available Zone Lighting allows occupants to turn on and off individual sections of exterior lights through the SYNC 4 display or remotely with the FordPass app on their phone. The all-new F-150 is the only light-duty full-size pickup to offer available Trailer Reverse Guidance and Pro Trailer Backup Assist. Trailer Reverse Guidance, made popular on Super Duty, uses the truck’s high-resolution cameras to provide multiple views along with helpful graphics that tell drivers which way to turn the steering wheel while backing up. Pro Trailer Backup Assist, which makes backing up a trailer as easy as turning a dial, continues on F-150. Where the fuel goes in and the power comes out, it is called the Ford PowerBoost Hybrid. 2021 Ford F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid The all-new 430 hp and 570 lb.-ft. of torque, 3.5L V6 PowerBoost hybrid makes F-150 the only light-duty full-size pickup to offer a full hybrid drivetrain and it’s available on every trim level from XL to Limited. Not only is the PowerBoost V6 rated at 12,700 and 2,000 pounds tow and payload cap respectively, it does so while achieving an EPA-estimated 25/24 mpg on 4x2/4x4 trims. It has an added benefit of replacing standalone gas-powered electric generators with Pro Power Onboard featuring best-in-class standard exportable power of 2.4 kW, with an unprecedented 7.2 kW available! The PowerBoost is mated to a smooth shifting 10-speed AT with a 47 hp electric mated between the 35L and the Transmission. The electric motor applies regenerative braking energy capture to help recharge the 1.5 kWh Li-ion battery. The battery is efficiently packaged underneath the truck, leaving the cab and cargo box of PowerBoost F-150 as spacious for passengers and cargo as other comparably equipped F-150 models. 2021 Ford F-150 Infotainment The all-new F-150 is North America’s first full-size pickup with standard over-the-air updates including all-new functions and additional features that could be added over the life of the truck. An all-new SYNC 4 is standard with hands-free voice control as well as core features such as making phone calls and selecting music. SYNC 4 can wirelessly connect smartphones without the USB cord for seamless integration of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto compatibility as well as SYNC AppLink apps like Waze and Ford+Alexa. Ford offers complimentary technology including 911 Assist that automatically alerts emergency responders in the event of an accident, and FordPass, a mobile device app that allows Ford drivers to start or unlock their vehicle from a distance, as well as control new truck-focused features like Zone Lighting, Trailer Theft Alert, Trailer Light Check and Pro Power Onboard. 2021 Ford F-150 Safety On the advanced active safety side of the equation, the all-new Ford F-150 arrives loaded for bear. Ford Co-Pilot360 2.0, standard on XL, includes Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking and Pedestrian Detection, rearview camera with dynamic hitch assist, auto high-beam headlamps and auto on/off headlamps. F-150 also adds 10 new driver-assist features including Active Drive Assist, which allows for hands-free driving on more than 100,000 miles of divided highways in all 50 states and Canada. Its advanced driver-facing camera tracks head position and driver eye gaze to enable hands-free driving when available. It allows owners on certain sections of pre-mapped, divided highways to drive with their hands off the steering wheel – if they continue to pay attention to the road ahead – granting them an additional level of comfort during long drives. The Active Drive Assist prep kit contains the hardware required for this feature, while the software to enable functionality, expected in the third quarter of the 2021 calendar year, will be delivered by over-the-air update or dealer visit. Separate payment will be required to activate full functionality at that time. Other new available features include Intersection Assist, which detects oncoming traffic while the driver is attempting a left turn. If there is risk of a collision with an oncoming vehicle, F-150 will apply the brakes to mitigate or avoid it. Every F-150 is proudly built and assembled at Ford’s Dearborn Truck Plant in Dearborn, Michigan, and Kansas City Assembly Plant in Claycomo, Missouri. The all-new F-150 will be available this fall. 2021 Ford F-150 w/ Pro Power Onboard With the just released all-new 2021 Ford Mustang MachE making headlines as North American Utility Vehicle of the Year, is it any wonder the all-new 2021 Ford F-150 with its new full hybrid drivetrain was named the North American Pickup Truck of the Year? Another congrats to Ford for making good on their promise of continuous improvements on the environmental front all the while adding a fully feature ladened truck for the rest.
"...It has an added benefit of replacing standalone gas-powered electric generators with Pro Power Onboard featuring best-in-class standard exportable power of 2.4 kW, with an unprecedented 7.2 kW available!..." I wonder how that works. With a 1.5kwh battery, it couldn't supply that amount of power for very long. The engine would have to kick in and the generator supply 2.4kw continuously? Then the battery can supply up to 7.2 kw for short bursts? In any case, that's a very useful feature. A hybrid already has all the components needed for an emergency generator, why not re-purpose them for that?
I imagine the tailpipe emissions will be cleaner than the typical 6KW gas generator or even diesel generator, especially if the engine is cycling often enough to keep the catalytic converter hot. I wonder if the output is a clean sine wave?... I, too, have battery and (sine wave) inverter capability at the house for limited backup, but not for 220/240V applications. I could get that with a gas or diesel generator, however that was not recommended for our geothermal HVAC system. For general 220/240V, I would need a couple of inverters that synch up.
Hi All: I made a request for the 2021 North American Truck of the Year, the 2021 Ford F-150 Hybrid. It is scheduled to arrive on Feb. 15th for a week long drive. And finally a non-fully loaded XLT trim is going to be in the drive. Hi Mike: Those memories in the first gen EcoBoost back in 2011 were great!!! 2011 Ford F-150 EcoBoost The Team! Hey look, I see Mike Sefton! The truck on Route 66. Off the beaten path! My favorite hero pic. Wayne
Hi All: Stupid is as stupid does as Forrest Gump once said. This weeks ride is the formidable 2021 Ford Trucks F-150 Powerboost Hybrid. It arrived as a 24 mpg combined rated 4X4 in XLT trim. The 3.5L V6 Hybrid upcharge of $4,495 is recouped just before reaching the 200k mile mark with regular unleaded at $2.75/gallon. If fuel costs rise, the mile crossover falls precipitously... Instead of mentioning a few of the F-150 Hybrids efficiency and calibration metrics including that it climbed into the San Bernardino Moutain range from 250' ASL to 7,200' ASL over 123 miles at just under 23 mpg. It came back down at 39.7 mpg to the same fuel pump. It climbed up to Mount Palomar from 180' ASL to 5,615 ' ASL over 47 miles at 19 mpg and descended the same at 43.7 mpg. The aFCD refueling and odometer offset calibrations revealed a positive coefficient of 1.8 percent from 28.1 mpg actual vs 27.6 mpg indicated after 287.9 miles on 10.248 gallons of fuel... What happens when you do something really dumb like hook the F-150 Hybrids 2.4 KW ProPower outlet to a Toyota USA #Prius Prime Plug in with 0 percent SOC? We should know in a few hours. Wayne
Hi All: 40-minutes in and and she is still consuming 1,217 watts at the plug while the on-board display is showing 1,300 watts. Sounds about right given there are losses... The 2021 Ford F-150 Hybrids aFCD now indicates 26.8 mpg. The truck is starting up about every 10 to 15-minutes and runs for a minute or two as it cycles to maintain its own traction battery's SoC. This is kind of cool actually although it will be a long day. Wayne
Hi All: And just like that, 5.5 hours later and the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime is fully charged. The 2021 Ford Trucks F-150 Hybrid consumed 1.19 gallons to supply 6.6 kWh. (217.4 mi/23.9 mpg)-(217.4 mi/27.5 mpg)= 1.19 gallons over 5.5 hours of charging. The last 10-minutes falls well below 1 kW but 5.5 hours is solid. From a full 31 gallon tank, the F-150 Hybrid could supply 1.2 kW - (31 gal/1.2 gal/5.5 hrs) =142 hours - for almost 6 days! Not bad if you are in desperate straights. Great job Ford! Now about the 1.2 gallons consumed at $3.099/gal that I refueled the Prime with this morning... That comes to $3.71 for 25-miles of range at its EPA rating. I think I will rely on SDG&E for plug power in the future. Wayne
Of course doing so would be dumb, just as Wayne admits using the F150 to charge a Prime is, but there is discussions over how much fuel the charge mode uses. Charge mode while park would give a number without the variables of speed and route. Then I was curious how it would compare to using the F150 hybrid for charging.
I'd better on the latter being considerably less efficient, even if hypothetically the engines were equally efficient, because of additional stages of conversion losses.
