Welcome to the grind
I’m on vacation today as well as yesterday’s bank holiday
Thanks for starting us up , Gord.
Today I'm in the Civic.
71 deg F , a little headwind ( N ).
35.0 miles , fcd = 52.2 MPG.
Low-fuel light came on at 553 miles.
Tank is at 51.1 MPG.
Not too shabby, Edwin.
Thanks , Bill. But I have hit a wall when it comes to getting
great MPG from the Honda.
Without having ridden with you, I'm guessing you would have to use more advanced techniques to get better results. Is it really worth it for a commute that you need to do without distraction? Your fuel consumption and carbon emissions won't decrease by much more even if you do improve an incremental amount. Plus the technique I'm thinking of would add more wear to your battery and starter motor.
I know... giving up is not an option and would be against the hypermiler's need to keep improving.
No problem Edwin and go on Bill tell him
If I turn off the engine at EVERY red light , it would help a lot.
Sometimes it's hard to know how long the light will be red , so
if I know I may only have to wait 10-15 sec , I leave it running.
The highway part of my trip gives about 50 MPG. That's what the Civic
will do at 55 MPH. When I get off the highway , I can bump it up to 52-53.
I am also looking at long-term wear on the battery , starter , and ignition switch.
Even though the highway portion of the 35 commute is 23 miles , there are lots of traffic signals
before and after the highway. I do pulse and glide , but still haven't gotten the rhythm
figured out , because this car glides so much better than the Prius. Yes, you read that right.
I probably need to start my glides earlier and at lower speeds. I'm sure the FSP's behind me will
love that, lol.
Filled up Civic today : 595.0 miles , 11.982 gal. Price of
Shell 87 E10 was $2.359. Fcd = 51.1 MPG.
595/11.982 = 49.7 MPG.
Last Thursday evening, detour #8 hopefully for the last time for a while, 56°F:
45.2 / 22.0
Various trips over the 5 day vacation:
56.3 / 4.3 - mum's
45.3 / 5.0 - back
48.8 / 25.2 - Southwell Workhouse and Minster, 3UP
44.4 / 24.5 - back - heavy rain
41.0 / 6.0 - follow wife to drop off her car for a service and back
38.6 / 6.6 - misc
64.9 / 4.4 - mum's
50.0 / 5.0 - back
41.7 / 2.9 - take wife to pick up car
44.7 / 2.9 - back home
To work this morning, motorway route, cooler 52°F:
51.7 / 21.4
Tank down 0.9 at 48.7 (FCD 51.8) / Range 140 . Guess gauge F____|_«««E . UG down 0.7 at 48.6 / DTE 144
Half tank @ 389 miles
Lost pip 5(of 8) @ 458 miles
That difference might have to do largely with tires. Are you "gliding" the Honda with engine off, or idling? In the Prius with the HSI indicator at the zero position?
Approaching a stop sign or short red light, I would coast the GLC almost to the stop, then start the engine without using the starter.
All gliding in the Honda is done with engine at idle.
All glides in Prius are at zero position. Sometimes even using a bit of juice.
There are a "few" short red lights on my commute. A "few".
No stop signs.
51+MPG....THAT’S A NICE WALL!!! I took our manual Elantra out (that doesn’t get as good MPG as the people are reporting here. I did go for a 40 mile country drive....72degF & I forgot to zero my MPG till AFTER I past thru our town. The drive included one other town(& stoplights) but mostly country roads. As I drove into our town toward the end of the drive, the MPG meter read 58+MPG. But, of course, the MPG plummeted during encounters with traffic & traffic lights. Where is the electric car when you need it?!!
Indeed! Happy to hit that wall in an ICE car anytime!
Today , in the Honda again.
35.1 miles , fcd = 51.7 MPG.
I wish I had the better gearing of the 10th gen Civic.
That was part of the reason why I didn't replace my Mazda (which had reasonable ratios) with a 2014 Versa Note or 2015 Fit.
But if I bought the 10th gen car , I would still be miffed because it's not a hybrid.
And if I bought the Insight , which is probably excellent , I would be upset
that it's not a PHEV.
Someone's not happy unless they're unhappy about something or other...
Wednesday night, motorway route but needed a detour on second half this time!, 57°F:
48.0 / 22.9
Cycled to work yesterday morning, dark to start and some rain, 59°F, head/crosswind SW11:
No fuel / 21.6 / avg 17.0mph
Tank steady at 48.6 (FCD 51.7) / Range 115 . Guess gauge F____|__««E . UG steady at 48.6 / DTE 121
Lost pip 6 (of 8) @ 525 miles
Home on the bike last night, 59°F, partial tailwind WSW9::
No fuel / 20.2 / avg 20.0mph
This morning, motorway, 54°F, head/crosswind SW6:

Tank steady at 48.7 (FCD 51.8) / Range 95 . Guess gauge F____|__««E . UG up 0.2 at 48.8 / DTE 102
Today , 52 deg F in Naperville.
35.1 miles, fcd = 67.9 x .943 = 64.0 MPG.
Tank is at 660.2 miles , 6 remaining , fcd = 71.8 x .943 = 67.7 MPG.
Low fuel light ( last pip ) started flashing at 640.7 miles. Hoping to
make to my Amoco after working out , about 26 miles from here.
Sadly, saw the aftermath of the fatal accident on the NYS Thruway. Two children. Awful
Yesterday drove a 2017 Explorer with four people in it. Mid 80s. A/C on the whole trip.
