Wayne Gerdes – CleanMPG – August 6, 2020 Introducing the Cadillac LYRIQ GMs EV 1.0 beginnings saw the EV1 introduced as the automakers first serious foray into the BEV marketplace. The 1996 intro saw 1,117 EV1s produced for lease only. All were picked up after the owner’s lease period and crushed. It was more of a trial balloon than anything serious and created buzz. A few live on as mostly undrivable curiosity pieces today. GM’s EV 2.0 program imho occurred with the introduction of the Volt in Dec. of 2010 as a 2011 model before its demise in early 2019 after selling more than 180k units globally. The model was a money loser despite volumes exceeding initial sales expectations. Within GMs second EV project reboot, the fully electric Bolt was introduced in late 2016. With less than 95k sold globally since its introduction and the U.S. Federal Tax Credit phased out in April 2020 it will carry on as a money loser with the next gen 2022 MY scheduled for late 2021. Moving on to GMs latest EV 3.0 program push as described in GM’s New Ultium Batteries and Near Future EV Platform Details, the automaker plans to reach profitability and large market share penetration almost immediately. The third attempt at EV vehicle profitability begins today with the reveal of the Cadillac’s debut of the LYRIQ fully electric crossover. The LYRIQ is based on GM’s next-generation, modular electric vehicle platform and driven by the Ultium propulsion system with a range touted to be beyond 300 miles. Charging options including DC fast charging > 150 kW and Level 2 charging rates up to 19 kW. The Cadillac LYRIQ will offer GMs Super Cruise, the industry’s first hands-free driver assistance feature, available on more than 200,000 miles of enabled roads and recently updated to include lane change on demand. The latest Super Cruise includes dual-plane augmented reality-enhanced head-up display and remote self-parking. Adaptive technology interaction with the driver and passengers will include a 33” diagonal advanced LED screen the spans the entire viewing area of the drive. Cadillac’s all-new, modular EV platform with the Ultium battery system lowers the center of gravity and provides near 50/50 weight distribution enabled by the placement of the battery. Additionally, the LYRIQ is driven primarily by the rear wheels, with a performance AWD option available. AWD enables the system to channel more torque to the pavement without wheelspin for exhilarating acceleration and greater cornering capability. Vehicles equipped with AWD go a step further, with a second drive unit placed at the front of the vehicle, which allows for a significant amount of tuning flexibility, enhancing vehicle dynamics and performance for drivers. ULTIUM Battery System The Cadillac LYRIQ is powered by GM’s Ultium battery system with approximately 100 kWh of energy. Ultium’s state-of-the-art NCMA (nickel-cobalt-manganese-aluminum) chemistry uses aluminum in the cathode to help reduce the need for rare-earth materials such as cobalt. In fact, GM engineers reduced the cobalt content by more than 70 percent, compared to current GM batteries. The advanced battery chemistry is packed in large, flat pouch cells that enable smart module construction to reduce complexity and simplify cooling needs. Additionally, the battery electronics are incorporated directly into the modules, eliminating nearly 90 percent of the battery pack wiring, compared to GM’s current electric vehicles. When it comes to charging, LYRIQ offers quick and convenient charging options whether at home or on the go. With DC fast charging, the LYRIQ can charge at rates over 150 kW. The Vehicle Experience When you approach, the LYRIQ recognizes the driver and initiates a “greeting” with a choreographed lighting sequence, while also preparing the cabin for the drive including seat, mirror and climate system adjustments. Once inside, the LYRIQ offers Cadillac’s highest level of driver information, infotainment and connectivity integration, for a more seamless and rewarding experience. The 33-inch-diagonal advanced LED display artfully integrates a single, large screen that spans the viewing area for the driver and incorporates driver information details, infotainment controls and camera views. This new display has the highest pixel density available in the automotive industry today and can display over one billion colors, 64 times more than any other vehicle in the automotive industry, providing a stunning in-vehicle experience unlike anything seen before from Cadillac. Battery and charging monitoring conveyed by easy, at-a-glance graphics. The system identifies the vehicle’s energy needs at home and on the go, according to owner preferences, while also monitoring and forecasting energy consumption and providing charging suggestions. LYRIQ’s technology also addresses sound in two important ways: Blocking unwanted sounds and making the most of the sounds passengers want to hear. For the first time, Cadillac will introduce a new road noise cancellation technology, which takes active noise cancellation to the next level by introducing more microphones and accelerometers, which improve noise cancellation abilities. With this new system, Cadillac’s performance and audio engineers can target the frequency range of tire cavity noise, reducing the noise level in the vehicle and allowing for a quieter in-cabin experience. Not a fan of these out of phase schemes as I find them to produce a nauseating harmonic that irritates rather than relieves. At launch, LYRIQ will offer a 19-speaker AKG Studio audio system that delivers exceptionally crisp and precise sound reproduction, enabling drivers and passengers to enjoy their favorite music. Cadillac LYRIQ Design LYRIQ is a modern white paper with Land Rover Evoque proportions at first glance. A low, fast roofline and wide stance are standard. A flow-through roof spoiler optimizes efficiency on the highway. A distinctive “black crystal” grille in the front is one of the LYRIQ’s most unique and expressive design elements. It provides a dramatic lighting choreography that with vertical, slim LED signature lighting. Out back, a split taillamp design incorporates slim LEDs that are also integrated into the lighting choreography. Inside, the LYRIQ’s new electric vehicle architecture opens up possibilities in vehicle spaciousness and design; and Cadillac designers used this as an opportunity to rethink how to use the space and where to locate various interior elements. GM should have offered a plug in SUV / AWD similar to the RAV 4 Prime. We own a 2016 Chev Volt (2nd Gen.). We have over 90,000 miles on it over 30,000 miles just on the gas engine. Per voltstats.net overall MPG just on the gas engine is 50.18 MPG, summer range is 55-60 miles on electric. There is a small amount of battery degradation. When new we would get 13.9-14.4 usable KWH. Now we average 13.5 KWH, not a big deal after 90,000 miles. MPG on the gas engine appears to be improving. The Gen 2 Volt operates on 87 octane (reg.) GM also did away with Premium gas as required in the Gen 1 Volt. We will never know what a Gen 3 Volt would have been.....
Hi All: Cadillac Celebrates Launch of LYRIQ at Spring Hill, Tennessee, Assembly Plant GM has now begun retail production of the 2023 Cadillac LYRIQ at GM’s Spring Hill, Tennessee, assembly plant. GM President Mark Reuss, Cadillac Vice President Rory Harvey, Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee, UAW representatives, plant employees and other officials joined together today to celebrate this milestone. GM announced a commitment to invest $2 billion in Spring Hill Assembly in October 2020, and the entire Spring Hill team has worked to prepare for production of the Cadillac LYRIQ. The launch accelerated ahead of schedule, while the team continued to assemble the Cadillac XT5, Cadillac XT6 and GMC Acadia with world-class quality. Reservations for the 2023 Cadillac LYRIQ Debut Edition sold out in just over 10 minutes late last summer, and demand continues to grow. Cadillac will begin taking additional orders for the 2023 LYRIQ on May 19. The Cadillac LYRIQ, the brand’s first all-electric vehicle, is built on GM’s Ultium Platform, the heart of the company’s EV strategy. The Ultium Platform encompasses a common electric vehicle architecture and propulsion components like battery cells, modules, packs, Ultium Drive units, EV motors and integrated power electronics. Through the Ultium Platform, GM will realize a strategic value chain shift across its network of vehicle assembly plants as the company commonizes and streamlines machinery, tooling and assembly processes. This flexibility enables lower capital investments and greater efficiencies as additional assembly plant transformations occur. GM’s Spring Hill manufacturing complex, which consists of a vehicle assembly plant, metal stamping plant and an engine plant, is the largest GM facility in North America. The complex opened in 1990 and has built more than 4.5 million vehicles. The vehicle assembly plant and engine plant sit on 2,100 acres with 700 of those acres dedicated to farming. An additional 100 acres are dedicated to a wildlife habitat, wetlands and native grasses. Spring Hill’s wildlife area has received Gold recognition and certification from the Wildlife Habitat Council. At launch, LYRIQ will be offered in a Debut Edition, available with advanced technologies enabled by its all-electric architecture. A 12-module, 100.4 KWh battery pack and a rear-wheel Drive unit deliver an estimated 340 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque with an estimated range of 300 miles on a full charge. LYRIQ also offers high-speed DC fast charging up to 190 kW <-- Whoops, that was a mistake, with up to 76 miles of range in about 10 minutes. When charging at home, LYRIQ can replenish its battery at the fastest speeds currently allowed by industry standards when equipped with a Level 2, 19 kW charge module that allows for up to 52 miles of range per charging hour. 2023 Cadillac LYRIQ Edges Closer to Delivery Cadillac’s first fully electric vehicle with an EPA estimated 312 miles of range on a full charge starts at $62,990 2023 Cadillac LYRIQ Given the price and technology, this is actually the first Cadillac I have ever been interested in as my own. Cadillac released new details including ordering information, pricing and EPA estimated range for the RWD 2023 LYRIQ BEV. Within the release, Cadillac announced a well thought out special charging offer, designed to simplify the charging experience for LYRIQ customers. Ordering for the 2023 LYRIQ RWD and AWD models opened last week with RWD deliveries expected this fall. Deliveries of the 2023 LYRIQ Debut Edition, which was available through reservation only, will begin this summer. The LYRIQ RWD model offers an EPA estimated 312 miles of range on a full charge and has a starting MSRP of $62,9902. The AWD model, which will start at $64,990, adds a second drive unit up front enhancing vehicle dynamics and performance even further. Customers will now have the option to select from two new exterior colors: Opulent Blue Metallic and Crystal White Tricoat. Initial deliveries of the AWD model are expected to start in early 2023, with its EPA estimated range expected to be announced closer to the start of production. All 2023 Cadillac LYRIQ customers will receive the option to choose either two years of unlimited public charging credits at EVgo charging stations <-- a poor choice at best currently - or a credit of up to $1,500 toward home charger installation through Qmerit. Customers who select the home charger installation credit will receive up to $1,500 that can be applied toward an eligible professional installation of a Level 2 (AC) charger or at 240V outlet at home for convenient quick charging of the LYRIQ’s battery. Every Cadillac LYRIQ comes with a portable dual-level cordset charger, which enables customers to charge their vehicles from both 120V and 240V outlets. Through Cadillac accessories, customers will be able to purchase faster 11.5 KW or 19.2 KW wall-mounted charging stations. By installing a 240V outlet or wall charger, customers can reduce the time it takes to charge a depleted battery from 3 days to overnight. LYRIQ The all-new LYRIQ is designed with premium technology and performance enabled by the vehicle’s dedicated electric architecture. A 12-module, 100 kWh battery pack delivers a Cadillac-estimated 340 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque in the RWD model, while the AWD model raises capability to a combined estimated 500 hp. The AWD model is adds a 3,500-pound trailering capacity. The LYRIQ RWD model offers an EPA-estimated range of 312 miles with a full charge. In addition to optimizing range, the system can also help reduce battery energy needed for heating, increase charging speed <-- Yeah, Pre-conditioning immediately prior to a charge event! - and even contribute to the vehicle’s performance driving dynamics. The LYRIQ offers at-home Level 2 (AC) charge rates of up to 19.2 kW, which can add up to 52 miles of range per hour of charge. It also features DC fast charging rates of up to 190 kW, enabling an estimated 76 miles of range in about 10 minutes of charging time. Not quite the 300KW/800V architecture of the Hummer EV but decent enough for those hitting the road. Driver and Passenger Centric Technology 2023 Cadillac LYRIQ Interior A lot of boxes checked within. Cadillac’s user experience system and 33” diagonal advanced LED display, artfully integrate the driver information center, navigation and infotainment systems to communicate information to customers. Additional optional technologies include: AKG Studio 19-speaker audio system, including headrest speakers, a Cadillac-exclusive feature that employs advanced technologies, including Adaptive Volume and Surround Technology, to create an immersive listening experience. Google Built-In compatibility offers a helpful and personalized way to enhance the in-vehicle experience, with Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play delivering access to hands-free help, live traffic updates, favorite apps and more <-- Yeah!!! Next-gen Active Noise Cancellation helps cancel out undesirable sounds coming from the roadway. This technology, when combined with LYRIQ’s Electric Vehicle Sound Enhancement, which balances and blends the propulsion system’s sounds, creates a luxurious and quiet cabin. I am not sure why this is necessary given how quiet a well-designed EV is already. The Cadillac LYRIQ is produced at GM’s Spring Hill, Tennessee assembly facility, which received a $2 billion investment to support electric vehicle production.
