Wayne Gerdes – CleanMPG – February 2, 2020 In its return to the Super Bowl, Jeep debuted a 60-second commercial reenacting Bill Murray from one of his most famous roles as Phil Connors in the 1993 film “Groundhog Day.” In the advert, Phil Connors enlists the help of the Jeep Gladiator as his “getaway vehicle” after taking the groundhog; thus, significantly altering his days for the better. It’s “Groundhog Day” All Over Again! The all-new 2020 Jeep Gladiator includes clever functionality and versatility, advanced Fuel-efficient Powertrains, and is loaded with the latest safety features and technology. It arrives with Command-Trac and Rock-Trac 4x4 systems, 3rd-gen Dana 44 axles, Tru-Lock electric front- and rear-axle lockers, Trac-Lok limited-slip differential, segment-exclusive electronic sway-bar disconnects and 33-inch off-road tires 2020 Jeep Gladiator Spec Can ford up to 30" of water. It is also equipped to tow 7,650 pounds with a payload cap of 1,600 pounds. The standard Crew cab config features a five-foot steel bed with covered external power source and integrated tie-downs. For the off-road purists, it even oincludes a fold-down windscreen! The only true open-air 4x4 pickup arrives with either a soft top or two differnt hardtops inclduing dozens of different door, top and windshield combinations. It is uses lightweight, high-strength aluminum doors, hinges, hood, fenders, windshield frame and tailgate help curtail weight. Its suspension was tuned tfor on-road handling and ride comfort without sacrificing its legendary off-road capability. And the crem de le crem includes two award winniong powertrains. 3.6L Pentastar V6 w/ Engine Stop-Start (ESS) mated to either an 8-speed AT or 6-speed MT 3.0L V6 EcoDiesel w/ ESS mated to the HD 8-speed AT. It also includes a 4th gen Uconnect system w/ Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and the choice of 7.0- or 8.4-inch touchscreens with pinch-and-zoom capability. And finally a forward-facing off-road camera on the Rubicon allowing you to see ahead when th eonly thing seen in the windscreen is blue sky overhead. Back to the Advert! In the lead-up to Sunday’s Super Bowl adverts, Jeep was running daily teasers across digital and social media, including the brand’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram channels, to tease the commercial. The teasers… Clock Ned in the Teaser The advert itself opens as the clock turns 6:00 a.m. “I Got You Babe” by Sonny & Cher starts playing, replicating the scene from the film. Phil Connors himself suddenly sits upright in bed. Twenty-seven years later, he’s stuck in Punxsutawney once again. The Jeep brand worked closely with Sony Pictures to ensure authenticity with the original film, which is now available to buy on disc and digital. Olivier Francois, Chief Marketing Officer, FCA: Locations featured in the commercial include the original bed-and-breakfast where Bill Murray’s character Phil Connors wakes up every morning; the Town Square where the Groundhog Day Festival takes place in the original movie; and the restaurant in Woodstock where Bill Murray’s character toasts to “world peace” in the original movie.
