What happens when… Wayne Gerdes – CleanMPG – June 10, 2019 2020 RAM 1500 EcoDiesel Super Truck! What happens when the most fuel-efficient full-size pickup in history receives a new chassis and an all-new and award-winning interior? It wins awards of course. 2019 RAM 1500 Mild Hybrid Best Pickup Interior - 2019 RAM 1500 Just one of many awards for the 2019 RAM 1500… Green Truck of the Year: 2019 RAM 1500 What happens when that same most fuel efficient full size pickup in history receives an updated and more fuel efficient drivetrain? Well, that is what comes next. The 2020 Ram 1500 when equipped with the award winning 3.0L EcoDiesel will deliver an unprecedented 480 lb.-ft. of torque, be able to tow up to 12,560 pounds, and is expected to lead the full size pickup segment in fuel economy. The 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is available within all trims including the Rebel. The 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel will go on sale in the fourth quarter of 2019 with pricing and fuel economy ratings announced closer to the truck’s on-sale date. New 3.0L V6 EcoDiesel Details For 2020, the RAMs soon to be available 3.0L V6 EcoDiesel is rated at a best-in-class leading – for full sized light duty pickups equipped with turbo diesels - 480 lb.-ft. of torque, up 14 percent from the previous-generation EcoDiesel V-6 that we have driven for thousands of miles previously. Horsepower Is up 8 percent to 260 hp. Here are the 10,000 ft view ways in which this was accomplished. A new-generation water-cooled variable-geometry turbo increases efficiency and responsiveness Redesigned cylinder head intake ports improve swirl and flow, increasing performance and fuel economy The EGR system has been updated to a dual loop (low and high pressure) system. The added low-pressure circulation system draws gases after the diesel particulate filter, thus minimizing turbocharger energy losses, which increases fuel economy The compression ratio has been optimized to 16.0:1 from 16.5:1 <-- Not sure how that helped??? High-pressure 29,000 psi direct-injection fuel injector nozzles were redesigned to match the newly designed combustion chamber Lightweight aluminum alloy pistons were completely redesigned to include thinner rings and low-friction coating on the pin and side skirts to reduce losses NVH has been reduced by offsetting piston pin by 0.3 millimeters from the centerline The lower portion of the two-piece oil sump uses a lightweight sandwiched polymer/metal material that reduces NVH A dual vacuum pump system uses electric and a new mechanical low-friction pump with new blades that improve overall system efficiency Like the previous iterations, the latest 3.0L EcoDiesel uses dual overhead camshafts (DOHC) with four valves per cylinder and a 60-degree angle between the cylinder banks. The block is cast with compacted graphite iron, which provides strength to dampen vibrations, but weighs less than grey cast iron. A compacted graphite iron bedplate adds rigidity to the block. The EcoDiesel V-6 uses a forged steel crankshaft and connecting rods. The aluminum alloy pistons are cooled on the underside via oil jets. Heat-treated aluminum cylinder heads use individual bearing caps to reduce friction and minimize NVH. The chain-driven overhead camshafts employ roller-finger followers. The Ram 1500’s Uconnect infotainment is also word class with its portrait oriented 12-inch split-screen capable touchscreen, 360-degree birds eye view cameras. Active safety include adaptive cruise control, Forward Collision Warning, Blind-spot Monitoring and Ready Alert Braking. Class-leading ride and handling is accomplished via a class-exclusive link-coil rear suspension system with optional Active-level four-corner air suspension. The 2020 Ram 1500 also features twice the interior storage capacity versus the competition. How about Five Years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, which covers the cost of all parts and labor needed to repair a covered powertrain component – engine, transmission and drive system. A standard three-year/36,000-mile Basic Limited Warranty provides bumper-to-bumper coverage for the Ram 1500, from the body to the electrical system. The 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is built at the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant (SHAP) in Sterling Heights, Michigan. The 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 is produced at the FCA Cento facility in Ferrara, Italy. 2020 RAM 1500 So what happens when? Well, let us hope a taller rear end is also part of the package which in turn would make the already most efficient full size pickup in history even better. This truck could once again be the truck you want to buy upon release… With some discounts thrown in for good measure that is.
File downloads, but when I click on open it goes to my podcast app and nothing happens. Anyone else able to open it?
Hi All: I finally got around to updating the story... Yeah, I think this is going to be a good one. Wayne
Hi Jud: Driving the previous gen RAM 1500 with the previous gen 3.0L Eco Diesel provided a stupid high level of efficiency. 2014 RAM 1500 Tradesman w/ the 3.0L Eco DIesel 3,000' climb over a 7 hour drive at 68 mph avg speed - 39.9 mpg 49.1/49.5 mpg indicated/actual over a San Diego to Long Beach 87 mile drive... <-- Stupid High!!! The 2020 RAM 1500 with the 3rd gen 3.0L V6 EcoDiesel's EPA should be up in just two or three months. Wayne
Video played fine with VLC for me. It's too bad I have such a short commute, only 5 miles to work, so I'd never get the oil hot. (Ready for a change, very unhappy with mileage of my Ioniq.)
VLC plays just about anything. Video plays fine for me on MX Player Pro on Android. Sorry to hear that about the Ioniq. I suppose that's true for any ICE car on short trips. If the economics of a plug in vehicle can work for you, I believe that's still a viable option for some time. My wife's doing well with the Prius Prime Advanced ($21k ish final cost) , using gas for her longer trips (15+ miles) and electric for the rest. All charging is done at home at a wimpy 3.3 kW rate that the car charger allows, and mostly for 30 to 45 minutes a day. Longest charging has been just over an hour. The EV range sits around 30 miles these days with warm weather. She gets over 150 mpge, and on gas, 60s to 70s while accounting for any electric portion. 2-person high speed long trips get in the 50s.
Heck , my MPG would be pretty sad if I had only a 5 mile commute. It takes the Prius a few miles before you can get a consistent engine shut-off.
