    2020 Ford Explorer Reveal

Detroit, MI -- America’s best-selling SUV over its long and illustrious 29-year history was brought to life in Detroit this evening.

New in every way, the 2020 Ford Explorer now provides far more efficiency with a yet to be fully revealed hybrid drivetrain in Limited trim, more space, new Infotainment, and the latest Safety technology.

The 2020 Ford Explorer lineup will arrive in standard, XLT, Limited, Limited Hybrid, ST, and Platinum trims with a price tag that starts at just $400 more than the outgoing model.

About those safety and convenience additions...

The 2020 Ford Explorer will be offered with Adaptive Radar Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, and Speed Sign Recognition.

It will come standard with Ford Co-Pilot360 driver-assist technologies including the following:
    • Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking, which includes Pedestrian Detection, Forward Collision

The Hybrid drivetrain details are embargoed until the full reveal at the NAIAS here in Detroit next week. If it is anything like the 2020 Explorer Police Interceptor with a 3.3L V6 Hybrid drivetrain rated at 24 mpg combined revealed earlier, it is one fast as hell hybrid. I am hoping for a lot less performance and a lot more efficiency as expected.

This is the key to making the all new 2020 Ford Explorer a consideration for many of us. I will add more after the details are released.

The all-new Ford SUV is manufactured in Chicago and is scheduled to arrive this summer.

In the meantime, enjoy this clip as the headline hero pic/vid of the all-new Explorer within a high tech virtual reality using actual prototype vehicles via fantastic digital presentation put on by the Ford team this evening.

    Hi All:

I am headed to Portland next month to get behind the wheel of the Explorer Hybrid. Kudo's? Looks good, holds a ton, and appears to be loaded with the latest infotainment... Concerns? 25 mpg or less?

25 mpg sounds a bit disappointing considering the regular (current-gen Explorer) is rated at 22 / 20 combined depending on engine choice (fwd only)

25mpg combined would be a 13% to 25% improvement over the current FWD while in a typically less efficient RWD configuration that can still tow a note worthy load.

    Hi All:

I was just approved to drive Ford's brand new halo SUV from the Press Launch in Portland to Dearborn, MI beginning on the evening of Thursday June 13th or the morning of Friday June 14th.

While 30 mpg should be an easy task, I am hoping to see 35+ from the monster 6/7-passenger SUV with the brand new 3.3L Hybridized drivetrain. If there is one thing Ford offers in abundance from their F-150 truck platform, it is huge interior and cargo volumes. TBA of course but having to reach across to a passenger door handle from the driver seat is all but impossible. See the specs following this post for more.

If only I could perform some 1 to 7-passenger rideshare in one while crossing the country to pull in comments from the general public on their own first impressions. :(

    Hi All:

And finally, my take on the 2020 #Ford #Explorer #Hybrid 4WD after driving it from approximately 50 miles due east of the Pacific Coast near Portland, Oregon to Ford's Garage, a famous restaurant in Dearborn, MI which is also home of the Ford Motor Company.

34.2 mpg indicated/33.9 mpg actual from the 23/26/25 mpgUS city/highway/combined rated 2020 Ford Explorer Hybrid 4WD after 3,376.5 miles indicated/3,473.7 miles actual. I will take it!

I wish I had found my USB stick with these vids on them months ago.

    Hi All:

We were provided the opportunity to tow a 4,800 lb speed boat and trailer combo locally. Construction, heavy traffic, boat launch, and back.

    2020 Ford Explorer Hybrid

    14.1 mpg...

Do not use Tow Haul. It deactivates most of the Hybrid features and in the stop and crawl, it kept running and running and running. I disabled t for the trip back. Not that a 44 hp electric motor would move a 5k lb SUV and 5k lb boat but the lengthy ICE-Off glides were clean with std. decent regen once the brakes were applied for stop.

The 2020 Ford Explorer Hybrid tows far better - read more confidently - than any Acura MDX, Toyota Highlander, or Nissan Pathfinder I have driven with almost 5k lbs on their hitches.

    #ExploreAmerica -- OR/WA border, WA/ID border, ID/MT border, Yellowstone, MT/WY border, Off-road at Dusk, and a Pronghorn Antelope.

When in a vehicle called Explorer, what do you think I should do? ;)

Crossings large swaths of the west was no big deal but crossing Idaho in just 75-miles on I-90 went quick! A beautiful section of America by the way.

I tried to get into Yellowstone but after a 3-hour long traffic jam, I simply turned around and drove back up to I-90 wasting over 6.5 hours of my very short amount of time.

    Hi All:

Here are the full aFCD offset and efficiency details for crossing much of the country between Idaho and Illinois.

Odometer offset: Actual miles = Displayed miles * 1.0288.

I deduced this from Garmin and Google Maps vs the Explorer Hybrids Odometer and Trip 1/2.

    2020 Ford Explorer Hybrid 4WD (23/26/25 mpgUS city/highway/combined)

    Refueling Details
    • 06/14 at 06:45 PM w/ 2,760.8 miles - Trip 2 000.0 miles at 00.0 mpg topped off and reset in Washington State
    • 06/15 at 04:00 PM w/ 3,365.9 miles - Trip 2 605.1 miles at 35.0 mpg - Conoco in Lame Deer, MT - 18.029 gallons
    • 06/16 at 10:30 AM w/ 3,847.3 miles - Trip 2 481.3 miles at 34.8 mpg - Shell in Mitchell, SD - 14.362 gallons
    • 06/17 at 07:30 AM w/ 4,419.1 miles - Trip 2 571.8 miles at 32.5 mpg - Woodman's in Rockford, IL - 18.252 gallons
    [IMG]

1,658.2 miles indicated/1,706.0 actual miles on 50.643 gallons = 33.7 mpg actual vs 34.0 mpg indicated.

aFCD actual = Displayed aFCD * 0.991 which is really really close. A breath of fresh air vs. so many other OEMs that cheat their displays like it is a game. I had to run through 3 full tanks as Ford's capless refueling system equipped vehicles are all but impossible to calibrate an aFCD on a single tank without huge errors. Refueling the Ford Explorer Hybrid with the capless system took about 45-minutes for each refuel to see the fuel level in the tube vs up to the rim since it would leak out all over the place if trying that. It was not a fun experience but worked to my satisfaction.
