I would sure like to try a tank of the 87 octane 0% Ethanol in our 2016 Volt and 2010 Prius. I know in the past with our Prius a gain of 3-5 mpg more, than the normal 87 octane with 10% Ethanol.
I was thinking the same thing. The upcharge is terrible. In my area, there is a station that sells E0 Conoco in all three grades and their prices are only 5 to 10 cents higher than the E10 stations. Conoco is a top tier gasoline also. Maverik is not. In the Tuscon area, there is no E0 available at any price.
Hi Jay: You live in a great area. Most Ethanol Free Fuel stations I have visited have a $0.50 to $0.80/gal markup. Some charge more than a $1.00 over regular unleaded! Here is an example of one I was looking at just today. I called to get the pricing and the upcharge was steep! Shell/Circle K in Shreveport, LA: $2.019/gal for regular unleaded or $2.99/gal for ethanol free. There is a Murphy's in El Paso, TX I was looking at today as well. They charge $2.11 for regular unleaded or $2.45/gal for ethanol free. Wayne
I had no idea. In Idaho, Sinclair sells E0 premium and the markup is about 50 cents over regular E10, but premium has a hefty markup over regular anyway, ethanol or no. E0 in the lower octanes is very rare.
Recently I noticed a couple of non-top-tier stations here selling E0 regular at about 25ยข upcharge. Why is E0 seemingly limited to shabby-looking old stores bearing obscure brand names?
I recall back in 1993 when I purchased my right off the showroom floor new 1994 Honda Civic, the rare one, model VX, 55 mpg EPA highway at the time. When running during the summer 60 mpg was pretty normal using regular gas, 0% Ethanol, during winter Oregon added 10% Ethanol to the gasoline and I noticed a immediate drop in mpg's at that time, those who kept track of their mpg's on gasoline also noticed the difference as well. I don't think ethanol is really all that great as a gasoline additive. Living on the Oregon Coast you can ask 100 boaters if they like ethanol in their marine gasoline motors, and 100 of them will tell you with no doubt a little profanity NO!!!
After a (half-tank) fillup in a small, up-the-coast Chevron, for some strange reason our calculated mpg 53.6 mpg, vs 51.4 on the previous tank, and 51.7 on the one hence. This is about a 4~5% improvement. As far as I know there was no indication on the pump about it being ethanol free, and the price was about the usual. The driving was very similar for the three tanks, ditto for weather. Reading on the web a bit, I saw some mention that in smaller towns beyond metro Vancouver, all the gas is ethanol-free. I tried emailing Chevron a while back, maybe the wrong address: no response.
Conrad & Bischoff sells the E0 Conoco gasolines in my area. This is a good question and I'd like to know more about how they are able to get E0 gasoline so I emailed them. If they reply, I'll relay their answer. I think it has to do with a certain refinery in Wyoming that sells E0. Edit: Just got a reply from Conrad & Bischoff and they say they get their E0 from a refinery in Montana. I see that there's a Phillips 66 refinery in Billings so presumably they get it there.
