Welcome back to the grind :D

The national average gas price is down a chunky 4.3¢ since last week to $2.293 - this time last year it was $2.336 so it's 1.8% (-4.3¢) cheaper.

Diesel is down to $2.474 (-1.9¢). It's now only 4.2% (+10¢) more expensive than this time last year. Diesel is at an increasing 7.9% premium to regular.

    _______________

No commute for me this week - car pooling

WELL... My wife is in the Fit today after dropping me off at work.

We were at a family reunion 4 hours away this weekend. Halfway home the Odyssey started running in 4th gear instead of 5th on the highway. If I was veeeeery careful with the throttle I could get it in 5th but it wouldn't lock so any hill popped it back into 4th. I babied it along and got into our town. In the stoplights and city driving, it went NUTS. Creeping along while revving high, shifting up and down at random intervals, banging into gears as it slows down, just general bad stuff. I was glad just to get home! It's parked on the flat part of the driveway because it would not go up the slope to the house.

Short version: van's transmission is slipping in a BAD way.

It's a 2004 with 168,000 miles. How much is a transmission, how much is a new vehicle to replace it. That's today's research project.

    Nnnnooooooo! Not the trusty Odyssey!!

Though if I had to guess what would slay it, transmission woulda been it. It's one reason I was a bit circumspect about Oddys when we were van shopping.

Hopefully it will work out for you.

Meanwhile, still waiting for a job to send me out of the Rio Grande Valley. It reminds me a lot of Bakersfield for some reason. Anyhow, no driving yet today.

  9. This tank is gonna suck. Pulled 3 dead trees out with the truck and a tow rope. A whole bunch of crawling around the parking lot loading stuff, unloading stuff, dragging trees. 5 days off soon, going camping. Another tank of bed fully loaded and dragging a trailer. Not complaining, its why i have the truck. Just cringe when the #s drop

So, ended up getting called up to Laredo to pick up a load headed to Indiana. Since I was sans trailer and generally going with the wind, I expected numbers in the teens. However, my DPF chose today to regenerate - the first time in over two years of driving. That cleaved my numbers in about half, so I managed around 6.7 to Laredo and not much better out of town, as regen finished about the time I arrived there.

Should be good numbers from here, as it's a very low weight load and I'll be riding with prevailing winds for the next two days at least.

Today , 57 deg F wind SW6. 35.0 miles , 68.73 MPG. Tank is at 135.0 miles , 71.05 MPG. I will doing a LOT of driving this weekend, but it also means a lot of events/fun. Maybe a hundred miles of recreational driving between Friday night and Sunday night. I just try to keep it above 70.

Good morning everyone, happy Tuesday morning for those of you in the US! It's beautiful outside, I went for a walk in the park. 1.1 miles in 22 minutes, impressive for me! Have PT tomorrow, but it usually isn't too bad.

53.0 / 7.3 - Picked up Panda Express (I know, I know... "fast" food, but had been cleaning the outside of my house and gardening!)
    53.3 / 5.9 - Return from restaurant
53.9 / 5.2 - Drive to the park this AM
    53.4 / 4.2 - Home

    Tank Average: 48.0 MPG :)

Above 70 mph, like most normal folks try to do?

70 mpg seems about the upper limit for me, and then only when I can get by with lots of slow engine-off coasting, and don't have bad luck with red lights.

Yup, right at about 9.9 mpg over 494 miles today.

    Haven't even left Texas yet.

Was one lane over and ~50ft behind a rear-end accident today. Pickup didn't pay attention and tagged a Camry pretty well. I was doing about 10mph in typical Austin traffic and gaining, so it was slower than that. Nevertheless, not much trunk left. Looked like even that used up the crumple zone?

I think you know me better than that , lol. I have seen 70 MPH at times, when the fcd was reading 75+MPG. But if I can string together enough 70-ish trips to get a true 70 MPG tank , I'm thrilled. Today , 54 deg F , wind = calm. 16.2 miles ( no highway) , 76.82 MPG. Tank is at 171.0 miles , 70.96 MPG. As always, I'm using a 0.93 correction factor.

James , 9.9 MPG is outstanding. Keep up the good work !

Still doing the single-car-family-with-kids game, so no mpg to report. I know it's going down but I'm not watching.

Waiting to get the van in the shop to get an estimate, then see about repair or replacement.

Man, 10.3mpg today. Not sure why but I'll take it. Shows how diesels like light load work.

Finally made it out of Texas. 520 miles today took me two states away to Tennessee.

I'm going to play with ton-miles per gallon numbers. If I'm doing my math right, this rig is 4-6x more efficient than my Civic.

Today , perfect conditions , except of course, the utter unpredictability of traffic signals. Some of you may want to disagree with that statement , and if you do , I suggest you drive a mile in my shoes(roads). 75.5 deg F , wind SSW12(tailwind). 35.0 miles , 71.14 MPG. Tank is at 252.4 miles , 71.24 MPG. I need to prepare myself for the first oil change in the Prius. First one that I have personally done on this car. I've done it many times on previous cars; I think about fifty times in the 89 Civic Si. I just need to find the easiest , cleanest , and most of all , the CORRECT way to do this. If I want a half-fast job, I can go to a place where a teenager with 11 minutes of training is turned loose on my car with a hammer and adjustable wrench.

I see what you did there. ;)

I'm back in the Fit, and there's a matching new van in the driveway. A 2014 Odyssey, 29k miles, in white. We've got a Honda Tweedle-dum and Tweedle-dee pair. It's sooo quiet, it's amazing. EPA 19/28 instead of the old 16/23.

59.2 / 4.4 to work this morning, right before the rain started from the Tropical Storm. Not expecting anything but a bunch of rain, we're 300 miles inland.

Tank is... down. 56 mpg before, 45.2 now.
