    Welcome back to the grind

The national average gas price has climbed 1.0¢ to $2.280 - this time last year it was $1.698 so it's a massive 34.3% (+58.2¢) more expensive .
Diesel has risen a tiny tenth of a cent to $2.507. It's now 25.7% (+51.2¢) more expensive than this time last year when it was below $2 and is at a 10% premium to regular.

My turn to drive this week, woke car pooler up as his alarm hadn't gone off  - new cell/mobile phone!. Had to go a touch faster than normal ;), 2UP, 38°F, 15mph tail/crosswind ENE:

Today , 25.5 deg F , wind W4. 35.1 miles ( again) , 57.2 MPG. Tank is....... dunno , need to find a new pen to put in the car with my notebook. My tiny brain can remember ONE 3-digit number from the car to my desk , not much more. We were in the city all day yesterday and saw a lot of traffic around McCormick Place for the auto show. We went to the Field Museum , and afterwards , Revolution Brewing's brewpub on Milwaukee Ave. For 112 miles of driving yesterday , about 59 MPG. NewKelly DOES like a bit of heat in the car , she's slender.
That's what happens when you try to use a cellphone to replace proven , 60-year-old tech. Sure it works , if you can figure the damn thing out. SOME people even allow the phone to navigate for them , which STILL baffles the hell out of me. Yes , I have a smartphone. No, I'm not in love with it.

Edwin, I use a mechanical pencil in my car. It works more reliably than a pen.

    55.3 / 11.4 mi - school and work this morning, 55F

    Tank 53.5 / 321 mi.

That's a great idea. My notebook gets oily just from my fingers rubbing on the pages every day. The pen gets super cold with Chicago winters. The pencil will work in outer space , a neighborhood I seldom drive in. I will buy or steal one.

I don't capture much data so a couple snapshots with the cell phone works for me. I do like the idea of a pencil, too, but there's never any paper around when I need it.

I just stick the pen under a leg while driving to warm it up ;) (pen retracted of course). I use a spiral stenonotebook from Officemax. Provides lots of space for a weeks worth of data on one page.

    Friday going home:
    56.2 / 13.0 miles (65F SSW@14)
    FCD = 51.0 (+0.2)

Saturday morning drop the boy off to take the ACT test for Duke. They wanted him to try his hand at the ACT even though he is in 7th grade, because of his previous scores in the Missouri Aptitude Testing.

Back home - even through it was up hill but a tail wind
    59.8 / 3.0 miles

I'm using the classic green , wide ruled composition book. I reinforced the paper covers with tape long ago. If I use one line for each day , this book will be full...... actually , the car may be gone by then ! I do intend to drive it for 8-10 years 200-250K miles. Today 33 deg F , wind WSW9. Finally , I break 60 on an inbound trip. 35.1 miles , 60.64 MPG. Tank is at 209.9 miles , 58.68 MPG. I'm racking up way too many miles recently , and too many of those are highway miles. Promised OldKelly I would pick her up from the airport tonight. More miles , tolls , probably home past my bedtime. Again.

Last night was awful, made it detour #2 but got caught in wrong lane and had to go old way further on - crawling uphill for 12 minutes with at least 15 stop/starts :mad:.
After that was confronted with another enormous queue which meant another detour all around the houses and back roads . 2UP, 52°F, 8mph head/crosswind ESE:

    36.6 / 22.0 It can only get better ;)

    Tank down 2/10 to 53.5 / 358 mi and right on 1/2.

You are not kidding Jason!!! I spoke too soon, last night was the worst journey home for some time! A consultation with Google traffic before setting off indicated almost gridlock in the city and out to the motorway so avoided the main route out and took multiple detours up muddy single track lanes with passing places, more country roads and lots of stop/start. 2UP, 48°F, 7mph tail/crosswind SW:

    33.9 / 22.7 - lowest for 3 months

    This morning, normal, 43°C, 7mph head/crosswind WSW:

    44.3 / 22.6

    Tank down 0.7 at 40.9 (FCD 43.2) / 263.4 / Range 305 . Guess gauge F___«|««««E . UG down 0.6 at 42.3 / DTE308

Only one more journey home then on vacation until next Wednesday - can't come too soon!

Surprise frost this morning. Forecast was 39F, but actual came in at 32. Didn't hurt mpg too badly though.

    51.8 / 5.3 - home last night
54.5 / 12.1 - school and work this frosty morning

    Tank steady 53.5 / 375 mi.

I'm driving to Dallas and back tomorrow (250 mi round trip) so I'll be filling tonight.

Wow taking the fit to Dallas. That will drop the MPG some. That is strange that you have 32F this morning I have 37F with winds from your direction HA HA.
Gord, that is just ridiculous. I feel for you but not to much as you have vacation coming up ;)

Today , 28 deg F, wind S1 , so....no wind. 35.1 miles , 59.05 MPG. Tank is at 481.4 miles , 58.59 MPG. The first three days on this tank I had toi drive about 300 miles. I'd like to stretch this tank until Sunday morning , so it would be seven days , but it will be difficult. I have another date with NewKelly Sunday , going to an orchid show at Chicago Botanic Garden. My idea.
