Light, powerful and more efficient = the perfect combination. Wayne Gerdes – CleanMPG – Aug 4, 2015 2016 VW Jetta 1.4L TSI – The engine. Pricing and EPA of the Jetta is TBA while arriving with this all-new downsized yet powerful and efficient 1.4L TSI. Volkswagen pioneered the use of direct injected and turbocharged small displacement engines beginning with the 1996 Passat TDI turbo diesel and in 2006, the gasoline fueled Jetta GTI and GLI. Building on that history, Volkswagen announced it is equipping the 2016 Jetta with direct injected and turbocharged EA211 1.4L I4 TSI engine. This replaces the naturally aspirated 2.0L used in the S trim and the multi-award winning 1.8T TSI engine in the SE model. The 1.4L EA211 features lightweight aluminum block and head, integrated exhaust manifold, and a toothed-belt for its DOHC that incorporates variable intake and exhaust timing. The 1.4L TSI in the Jetta features a 10.0:1 compression ratio, direct fuel injection, and turbocharging to produce 150 hp and 184 lb-ft. of torque. This engine’s turbocharging system uses a unique intake manifold and small single-scroll compressor. The intercooler is integrated directly into the injection-molded induction pipe. The all-new I4 will be mated to a slick shifting 5-speed MT or a 6-speed AT with an estimated 39 mpgUS highway rating with the six-speed AT, an improvement of 7 percent over the 1.8T. I suspect this new 1.4L TSI will be a Ward’s 10-Best Engines next year and headed to the entire VW lineup in short order. I have already requested to drive a 16 Jetta with this brand new 1.4L TSI inside as well.
