Huh. It's hard to imagine why that happened. It kinda looks like he got a bad sounding and panicked but that's a total WAG on my part.
My guess: It looks to me like the ship on the right was trying to pass the other one. He ran out of room when the channel narrowed. He had to cut back in to avoid running aground, but the other ship was there. He committed to the collision about 5 minutes before it happened. That is the slowest, but most forceful, collision I've ever seen.
