    Hi All:

I have a few questions since I do not have a Passat TDI manual handy at the moment.

What is the minimum weight oil recommended and what brands are available for it either within the dealer network or non-related retail channels?

Also, is there a block heater available for the Passat TDI from Volkswagen directly?

    TIA

    Wayne

Oil needs something meeting VW 507.00, so far everything is 5w-30. Aside from what the dealer sells (not sure on the brand but they seemed to use Castrol before), you can get Mobil ESP 5w-30 at Pep Boys. Or there seems to be a bigger selection online at http://www.idparts.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=25_28&products_id=2472

Local dealers here install an inline coolant heater, I'm not sure if it's a VW part or their own special kit.

    Hi Mike:

    Thanks for the link.

Started doing some searches on the 507.00 low ash and found the following:

    Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30
    SAE Grade: 5W-30
    Viscosity, cSt (ASTM D445)
    @ 40ºC: 72.8
    @ 100ºC: 12.1

    Castrol SLX Professional OEM 5W-30
    SAE Grade: 5W-30
    Viscosity, cSt (ASTM D445)
    @ 40ºC: 71
    @ 100ºC: 12

Penzoil Ultra Euro L Full Synthetic Motor Oil 5w-30
    SAE Grade: 5W-30
    Viscosity, cSt (ASTM D445)

    @ 40°C: 67.1
    @ 100°C: 12.0

    Pento Super Performance III 5W-30
    SAE Grade: 5W-30
Viscosity, cSt (DIN EN ISO 3104) <-- Different measure?
    40 °C: 71.3
    100 °C: 11.9

LiquiMoly Top Tec 4200 SAE 5W-30
    SAE Grade: 5W-30
Viscosity, cSt (DIN 51562) <-- Another Different measure?
    40 °C: 70
    100 °C: 12.3 mm²/s

Quaker State Ultimate Durability European 5W-30 motor oil does not appear to be VW 507.00 certified? Its kinematic viscosity at 40 and 100 degrees C is 74.4 and 11.3 respectively. Good for the open road, not as good for a lot of cold starts and short duration local driving.

So it appears the Castrol OEM oil is about as good as it gets for the mandatory low ash formulation?
