Crap. After eleven plus years I was just laid off from my job as a CNC Programmer/Operator.
I have thirty years experience in this field , so I think I know a thing or two. Does anyone here know a place ? I'd like to stay in Chicago but I would consider Texas.

There are many openings in the Daytona area, but the wages are insulting. Here's a link to a search engine. employflorida.com Good luck. PS, use 32174 as the zip code for the search.

Edwin, Sorry to hear about the layoff. I am a Mechanical Engineer and I deal with prototype shops in the Boston area a lot. I hear that your skill set is in high demand in our area anyway. Good luck.

Re: WANTED : A good Job

Thanks for your kind words, guys. I'm confident the next few weeks will find me in a new and better position. Chicago Mold Engineering is a first-class mold shop and I hear they are hiring. Most of my experience has been with building injection molds, anyway.

    Hi Edwin:

I have not heard an update on this in a while. Are you back to fully employed now?

Re: WANTED : A good Job

This may be already assumed, but I have NEVER gotten a job from an ad or applying to a listing. I wasted the entire summer applying for scarce jobs in my field. I eventually got a job that traced to a networking lunch with a colleague this past summer. Not really the kind of job I wanted, and way outside my comfort zone, but it will do for now and I'll build skills.

Not to get bitter, but I have no idea how some people in hiring authority make decisions. The one job I passionately wanted and was qualified for was filled by someone fairly fresh out of school with practically no experience.

Re: WANTED : A good Job

Hi, Wayne. I started my new job Monday and I think it's gonna work out great !

My title is CNC programmer/machinist , but so far it looks like they just want me to program.
I could probably work 50+ hrs/week if I choose to , but I'm starting out a bit slower. 8.0 hrs Monday , 9.5 hrs today. I'm working for a company in Batavia that does a lot of work for Fermilab. I think I am going to like working for a company with 26-50 employees as opposed to 13,000 employees like the last place.

Someone had to ask, right? :-D

    Congratulations, Edwin.

I hope it's more than just a job and the small company has a positive atmosphere.

Thank you all for the good wishes. The commute can be described like this : Drive just like I'm going to my old job , but instead of making a left and going 250 meters , I go straight for about 2.5 miles. Mostly down hill , as I cross the Fox River. I leave the house at 5:00 AM , just like the last job , so in the morning it's pretty smooth. But instead of leaving work at 2:00 PM and having light traffic on the way home , I am getting out 4:00-4:30 (or whenever I wish) and enduring BAD traffic.

I think it's a great opportunity for me. We have so much work that our growth is only limited by our vision and drive. We have brand new machines (wire EDM and sinker EDM) just sitting there until we get people trained to operate them. A lot of work is for Fermilab , and the DOE has pretty deep pockets. And apparently there is almost no real competition.
    It's gonna be interesting.
