    Hi All:

The 2014 Malibu Receives 5-Star Overall NHTSA Crash Test Score

With all of the focus on A and B-segment cars IIHS crash testing this week, Chevrolet’s midsize offering, the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu, was awarded a 5-star Overall Vehicle Score for safety as part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s New Car Assessment Program.

Safety technologies featured on the Malibu include an ultra-high-strength steel safety cage, rollover protection and 10 standard airbags including knee airbags for both driver and front passenger and outboard rear seat side airbags at no extra charge. A feature few if any automaker offers while GM provides t on their entire lineup standard. And I applaud them for it too!

In addition to the over the top passive safety features, available active safety technologies including Forward Collision Alert and Lane Departure Warning, can assist in avoiding a collision. Side Blind Zone Alert uses sensors to warn drivers of vehicles entering their blind spot on either side. The pairing of Rear Cross Traffic Alert, new to Malibu for 2014, and rear vision camera can make backing out onto busy streets a more informed affair.

Every Malibu comes with OnStar service standard for the first six months. In the event of a collision, OnStar Advisors can contact the vehicle even if occupants cannot respond.

The 2014 Chevrolet Malibu has not yet been fully tested by the IIHS meaning the Small Overlap (SOL) test has not yet been completed. The 2014 Malibu has a Good score by all measures and with basic forward collision avoidance technology, could earn a Top Safety Pic for 2014 “if” it earns at least an acceptable rating in that final test.

Malibu had its best retail sales year since 1999 last year although final overall sales numbers for 2013 show a somewhat unfortunate fall off with 200,594 vehicles sold, down 4.9 percent from the 210,951 Malibu’s sold in 2012.

GM Dec. 2013 Sales Down 6.3%, Up 7.3% for the Year

GM continues to work the Malibu despite the platforms shortcomings and very soon they may actually be back in contention.

Complete Redesign of the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu

    Hi All:

Finally a complete redesign of the Malibu for 2016 despite being a complete redesign for the 2013 MY. Most importantly, they added 4 inches of wheelbase which will cure that “small kids only” backseat!!! The profile looks more modern with the cab rearward pull, steeper raked windscreen, less overhang front and rear, vertical nose style and a liftback like rear profile. If they add an even more modern interior than the Impala, their latest connectivity, and the promised efficiency increase, look out as Chevrolet may finally have a real competitor in the midsize segment.

    The darkened profile.

The next generation gen Chevrolet Malibu will be lighter, longer, larger, and more efficient. Full details are scheduled to be released at the New York Auto Show Press Days early next month.

Chevrolet said they used a blank slate approach with an entirely new architecture.

Due to a higher-strength steel structure, the new 2016 Malibu is expected to lose approximately 300 pounds which will benefit the sedan’s fuel economy ratings and handling. We are talking about a modern midsize closing in on just 3,000 pounds!

More details about the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu will be shared each week leading up to the vehicle’s global debut. The 2016 Malibu is scheduled to reach dealership showrooms by the end of this year.

All told, I was worried Chevrolet was going to follow their old practice of allowing them to fill rental fleets for 8 years while falling two generations behind its competitors. With this complete redesign, I am actually kind of excited and will have more at each release.

    Hi All:

[fflash=right][/fflash]More on the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu.

Instrumented tests like those used in the past and far more stringent ones used currently should ensure that the next generation 2016 Chevrolet Malibu will be as durable and reliable as the current gen.

GM engineers analyze data to calculate the precise amount of damage potholes and other hazards create over 150,000 miles. Then the conditions are replicated at GM’s Milford Proving Ground in Michigan on three unique road courses, each riddled with simulated potholes of increasing severity. Engineers then run preproduction cars over the course hundreds of time to test the simulations with real world driving.

Additional validation and development tests include logging more than 1.5 million miles of driving in both controlled environments and public roads.

At the GM Technical Center in Warren, Mich., the 2016 Malibu pre=production prototypes are run for several hours in the Climatic Wind Tunnel, where temperatures can be raised to 140 degrees and lowered to 40 degrees below zero.

The new Malibu also endures a battery of stationary and dynamic tests to simulate abuse well beyond the average lifetime of the car. These tests include:
    • A four-post vehicle test which balances each wheel on a hydraulic post that actuates the suspension at high frequency, accelerating the wear on bushings and dampers

    • Door, hood and decklid slams speed up wear on hinges and latches

    • Road durability testing includes extremes such as twist ditches, driveway angles, mud and gravel, high-speed tests, chatter bumps, Belgian blocks and salt spray

New 2016 Chevrolet Malibu Tech Helps Parents Enforce Kids Safe Driving Practices

[fflash=right][/fflash]2016 Chevy Malibu offers new drivers feature to promote safe driving habits

In a GM release, the company discussed what parenting a new driver is all about. I think they covered the bases very well too.

Parents know that coaching a teenager on how to learn safe driving skills is vital. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ((IIHS), in the US, the fatal crash rate per mile driven for 16- to 19-year-olds is nearly three times the rate for drivers ages 20 and over.

The all-new 2016 Chevrolet Malibu will debut Teen Driver, a system that provides parents with a tool to help encourage safe driving habits for their kids, even when they are not in the car with them. Teen Driver supports safe driving habits by muting the audio of the radio or any device paired with the vehicle when front seat occupants aren’t wearing their safety belts, and it gives audible and visual warnings when the vehicle is traveling faster than preset speeds.

This feature is the first in the industry with a built-in system that lets parents view on a display how their teenager drove the vehicle. Maximum speed reached, distance driven and number of times active safety features were engaged all can be confirmed.

The all-new 2016 Malibu can keep track of the following paramters:
    • Distance driven
    • Maximum speed traveled
    • Over-speed warnings issued
    • Stability control events
    • Antilock brake events
    • Forward Collision Alerts, if equipped
    • Forward Collision Braking events, if equipped
To use Teen Driver, a parent needs to enable the feature by creating a PIN in the Settings menu of their available MyLink system, which then allows them to register their teen’s key fob. The system’s settings are turned on only to registered key fobs.

When active, Teen Driver automatically mutes the radio until front safety belts are fastened. Additionally, the radio system’s maximum volume can be set to a lower level. If the vehicle is equipped with active safety features like Forward Collision Alert, they are automatically turned On. Parents can select a maximum speed (between 40-75 mph), which, if exceeded, activates a visual warning and audible chime.

If equipped, these are the safety features that are automatically turned On and incapable of being manually turned off when Teen Driver is activated:
    • Stability Control
    • Front and Rear Park Assist
    • Side Blind Zone Alert
    • Rear Cross Traffic Alert
    • Forward Collision Alert
    • Daytime Running Lamps / Automatic Light Control
    • Forward Collision Braking
    • Traction Control
    • Front Pedestrian Braking
All of which should be on automatically anyway…

In addition to innovative safety technologies like that shown above, you will see efficiency, advanced connectivity and stunning design in the 2016 Malibu.

Teen Driver is not a subscription-based service, so it remains with the vehicle permanently and will be standard on the Premier trim and optional on LT models if equipped with the Convenience Package and up-level radio. The 2016 Malibu debuts at the New York Auto Show in early April and is expected to go on sale at the end of 2015.
