    Insight Marathon Attempt - Tonkawa, OK. Sept. 25 - Oct. 4, 2006

    The Idea

What started the whole idea as well as what we are attempting to achieve came about from the following as achieved in the MPG Challenge at Hybridfest 2006 in Madison WI. this summer. A straight up Low Speed P&G with much effort expended using elevation changes to maximize FE. Take the HF2006 MPG Challenge segment's distance and multiply by 100 + :D

With the ability to sustain 150.0 mpg, would holding the same through an entire tank be possible? With almost 14 gallons of fuel from a top-off and maybe 143 mpg sustained, we had a shot at taking a 2001 Honda Insight to beyond 2,000 miles on a single tank of fuel. At least that is what we were shooting for when we started ;).

The Insight Marathon’s final result was accomplished using mostly advanced hypermiling techniques and taking them to a level not feasible in a standard high speed commute. Suffice it to say that we used the whole toolbox including P&G, DWL, SB, DWB etc. to their nth degree and taking full advantage of the range of options the Manual transmissions equipped Insight provided. We drove in a very rural area with little traffic allowing us to exploit these techniques to their respective limits.

    The Participants

Bill Kinney (Billy) from Kennewick, WA. - A 20 year hypermiler going all the way back to the days of a CRX and continuing through his third Insight in almost as many years. Here are his reasons for joining us at the Insight Marathon Attempt:
Justin Fons (Citrus Insighter) from Pewaukee, WI. - At the ripe old age of 16 years, he was the first 16 year old in the world to achieve a 100 mpg segment in a mass produced automobile. Namely, his 2000 Honda Insight. Since that time, he has not only aged 1 year, he has steadily improved to the point of taking the highest FE from an unmodified Insight at the HF2006 FE Challenge nailing down 117.2 mpg over that 20 mile segment! He will be accompanied out by his father Bradlee who some may know as the leader of the Milwaukee Hybrid Group and promoter of Hybrids everywhere.

Randall Burkhalter (highwater) from Blackwell, OK. - Not too long an Insight owner but currently holds the Honda Insight - World record distance on a tank of fuel. 1534.2 miles! Not including the fact he nailed down 114.2 mpg on that same tank. He currently has the the highest lmpg in his Honda Insight of any mass produced automobile on the planet.

And my reasons as to Why …

Dan Kroushl (Krousdb) out of PA. - The list of accolades would fill this page but here are just a few … First person on the planet to figure out how to take the Prius II to 100 + mpg’s sustained. Had the highest running average of all the participants at the Prius Marathon Attempt last year somewhere in the 113 - 114 mpg range over hundreds of miles driven. Second highest tank distance ever recorded in a Prius II (Prius Marathon Attempt) 110.03 mpg after 1,397 miles. TDS 2006 Co-driver and Grand Champion. HF2006 Prius II co-winner of the Prius II entrants with 2 others that achieved > 99.9 per the Prius II FCD’s. His was SG-I connected showing 115.x mpg’s over the 20 mile course and by far the fastest time of all 3. Hybrid and non-hybrids alike have not stood in his way for reaching maximum FE no matter the vehicle.

Louis Hudgin (Sno779) from Phoenix, AZ. - After he found out what the Insight was capable of, he was the fourth person in the world to have achieved a sustainable 150.0 + mpg segment in one. Another is that he is only the third person to have achieved > 1,500 miles on a single tank of fuel (1,520.2 miles @ 112.2 mpg) in a mass produced automobile - that being his 2000 Honda Insight of course and from his last tank!

Wayne Gerdes (xcel) from Wadsworth, IL - Inspired to hypermiling in part by the Honda Insight, he achieved a remarkable 92.8 lifetime mpg in that vehicle. His awards include the 2006 Tour del Sol Grand Championship in challenging conditions, and the HF2006 fuel efficiency competition where he achieved >150 mpg. He was one of the promoters of this event as well as the 2005 Prius marathon, where the team he was a member of exceeded 110 mpg. Promoting hypermiling as both science and art form, he continues to inspire and encourage others toward continuous improvement in fuel efficiency.

Insight Marathon Team - Louis - Randall - Justin - Wayne - Dan - Bill in Tonkawa, OK. With the 4 Insights as the back drop.

Direct Support came from many who I want to personally thank for their time, effort, and encouragement.

Brian Hardegen (NEmystic) out of MA. - A long time Insight enthusiast going back many years. He has not only exceeded 100 mpg’s in his own 2001 Insight many times, he won the TDS 2005 event! Although he could not be a direct participant because of a scheduling conflict, he helped tremendously with our behind the scenes planning.

Doug Schaefer (Tochatihu) from Fremont, OH. - A long time hybrid enthusiast with an education and resume that could fill this thread. He is also the first person to successfully achieve a 100 mpg sustained segment in a Prius I. He has made elevation maps for every hybrid event we have participated in. Just like Brian, he helped with the behind the scenes planning. The topographical maps shown in the Route section were created by him after receiving the route layout from myself.

Mike Dabrowski out of CT. - An inventor/engineer who has probed and discovered more about the Honda Insight then anyone on the planet other then those that actually designed her many years ago.

Bradlee Fons from Pewaukee, WI. - A hypermiler in his own right but the father of Justin who drove the entire way out to Tonkawa so that Justin could get some rest. He also wrote the on-site press release and created the Insight Marathon signage as show in the pics below.
Friends and acquaintances who came out to the event to visit included Chuck (Delta_Flyer) out of Dallas, Texas, Jeff Townsley (Psyshack) out of Oklahoma, Jason (Lakedude) and Rick (RH77) out of Kansas City, Kansas.

    The Route

Maps and topography of the course … As far out of the way as any of us could have possibly hoped for given what we were trying to achieve.

Back down the “Tonkawa Glide” to the start/finish!

With names of sections of the course including the “Tonkawa Glide”, “Heartbreak Hill”, the “Marland Slide”, “One Lane and Casino Bridge” and the “Dog Slobber Scare”, I had hoped the pics above would have given an idea as to what the route we drove actually consisted of. Unfortunately, the pictures do not do the course justice given the way we used the many elevation changes to maximize the Insight’s FE as well as showing those heartbreaking climbs and harsh winds that seemed to bleed the Insight dry again and again and again …

    Hi All:

___As if we need more pics? Especially the 56K dialup users :D

___Here is a close up of the “One Lane Bridge” on the far side of the course after the “Marland Slide” courtesy of Chuck.

___The first time Justin come into this with a few of us being in the chase, a school bus beat him to it and the rocks and road debris were flying as he brought her to a halt along the far right side. About 100 yards back from where the pic was taken of course. Most of us had a few close encounters but I think Justin and Louis were the only two members that actually got hung up waiting for traffic to clear. It was also very much a bone jarring bridge to cross as can be seen in the pic …

    Doug Schaefer

Thanks for the maps and all your help with the marathon. You made a comment that you thought we had not yet seen the ultimate capabilities of the Insight. Today I was returning from Tucson home to Gilbert and when I came to my P&G training sight. I started to P&G with very favorable conditions and after 50K the FCD was showing 0.9 L/100K. Of course it was only one way and that was the best way. We had two laps recorded at 1.2 L/100K in the marathon and Wayne said he saw 1.0 for most of one lap until the Casino hill knocked it down. I think it is possible and probable that our record will be broken, but even at the slow speed of 18.5 MPH it is anything BUT boring.....Louis

PS Anyone know what 0.9 L/100K works out to in MPG?

Re: The Insight Marathon -- circa 2006 -- World Record 2,254.4 miles on one tank of f

Lets see, if it is really 261.35 mpg instead of JUST 261.3 mpg, and we round up, it would come out to 261.FOUR mpg. YAHOOOOO that makes me feel better.

There was this big blonde and brown dog about half way down the westbound leg that most, if not all of us encountered. The first encounter was always the most dramatic. The dog lived at and protected a family and home that was set back a little from the north side of the road. The dogs job was to sit in the middle of the yard and watch for and dispense of any potential hazards to the family. Most of us passed the house when we were just about but not quite at the end of a long glide. The dog would see this unfamiliar car driving differently from the rest of the traffic and dutifully come out and chase it away. The first time he saw me he came charging hard and barking for all he was worth. I had the right window down and was afraid he was coming in for lunch. I got the window up just in time and he just smacked into the side of the car. I think that was the first time he had ever cought one and he didn't quite know what to do with it. Randall had him run along side the car looking inside to see what he was up to. Wayne heard, but not saw, him running along side the car in the dark of the night. The dog scared him so bad he started up the engine early, turned on the lights and pulsed away from there. That was Waynes best lap and one of two 1.2s for the whole event. Wayne was still pretty shook up when he got back to the room that night what with the loss of his 1.0 at casino hill, the dog, and the night driving. Still with all that "reality" he did pretty darn good. Another time I had the dog race me, and he passed me, then sat down and waited for me to pass. Another time as I went by the dog just sat there watching me, so I barked at him, then he came and chased me. After that he became used to us and ignored us.......Louis

There is a guest that keeps reading this thread and has basically been reloading it constantly over the last few days. Does anyone know who might be doing this? I am going to remove their access shortly if no one knows who it is or why they are doing it. The only hint I have is the guest is from OK.

    Hi Tom,
The activity in question should have stopped about the time I got home this morning. Caught one of the neighborhood kids ringing the doorbell and hiding in the bushes :D .
But hey, thanks for the bump;) .

Heh. It isn't much of a problem, but I just get paranoid when i see unusual activity.

I guess I never saw it there. Sorry about that. I thought this was new news since it was just posted to PC yesterday.

There seems to be an unnatural interest in the (SPEED) of our DISTANCE record. Our goal was to go as far as we could go on a standard tank, which naturally includes an MPG component as well. When the goal is MPG, speed isn't important. When the goal is speed, MPG isn't important. The World land speed record is 763 MPH, do you know what there MPG was? Does it matter? Does it make there record more or less credible? Or is it just a curious side note or is it the ever present realities of speed. If you think about it that way, the two teams accidentally proved the same thing on the opposite ends of the envelope, that being high speed = high fuel consumption.....Louis

ps...there MPG was 0.04 or if my math is correct, 211 FPG (FEET Per Gallon).

Louis - you are right. The Insight Marathon set the new benchmark for FE on a stock production car. Eventually it will be broken, but the achievement is not dimished.

Last night while researching the LSR, it was interesting to note the long list of challengers to the record and how it kept creeping up faster and faster. I would be willing to defend our record with technique and technology, but I hope it is challenged and broken. I can't see anything but good coming from it......Louis
