Back in the 1970's there was a lot of chrome: bumpers hood ornament side trim wheels door handles tail pipes Getting rid of weight (and maybe apartheid) changed that. Fortunately the plastic bumpers don't fade these days. Plastic has replaced a lot of bumpers and dashboards. For the interior, it was mostly safety considerations.
