The EPA is very concerned about the NO2 emissions, yet juice bars in my gym and vitamin stores sell it or something similar as a performance supplement (Nitric Oxide). Strange that something that is sold almost as a legalized steroid sounds like public enemy #1 by the EPA.
I beleive that the N in NO is used by muscles to release energy, which comes in handy when weight training. Also found in creatine (a nitrogenous organic acid), which helps muscles burn energy anerobically. It doesn't build muscle like a steroid but helps burn more energy so you can lift more weight for a given set thus building more muscle mass . Eating an 8 oz sirloin gives you about 5-10 grams of creatine but with all the fat and cholesterol. (not so good for you).
Ozone is good at high altitudes and bad at low altitude; I suppose this is no different. Good to eat but bad to breathe.
Here is a link that will help explain some interesting effects of NO in the human body: http://purplemedicalblog.blogspot.com/archives/2004_01_11_purplemedicalblog_archive.html A little more googling will reveal that fireflies "light up" in a similar way. It is still true that NO in the atmosphere is not really our friend. DAS
