Touring the floor, European push for smaller, cheaper cars apparent

PARIS -- European car makers always have known how to make small cars, but with prices at the pump escalating, CO2 taxes burgeoning and economic weakness eroding disposable incomes, the race is on to make ever-smaller and cheaper automobiles. Despite all the recent gasoline price increases in America, gas still costs more than twice as much in Europe and the European Union's emissions regulations are different -- and proposed to become even stricter. The European economy is, like America's, slowing down close to the point of recession, so car buyers are conserving income by either delaying purchases, or trading down to less fancy models.
