Carmakers focus big on small and fuel efficient compacts.

FRANKFURT, Germany -- Automakers unveiled a trio of concept cars here Tuesday that were small enough to appeal to first-time buyers yet sophisticated enough for an affluent family looking to buy a third car for quick trips to town. Inspired by the success of DaimlerChrysler's innovative Smart two-seater and BMW's racy Mini, Ford Motor Co., Volkswagen AG and Toyota Motor Corp. are all developing their own city cars.
