Far more advanced and powerful 1.8L I4 takes the place of the aged 2.5L I5 2014 VW Passat with the 1.8L TSI under the hood. Under hood, the 2.5L I5 will be gradually replaced by a brand new direct-injected and turbocharged 1.8L I4. The 6-speed manual provides an 24/35 mpgUS city/highway rating, a 3 mpg improvement on the highway over the outgoing 2.5L. VW engineers also made some other significant mechanical improvements for 2014. On the cars fitted with the 1.8T engine, the hydraulic power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering has been replaced by an electric-assist system.
