VWs XL1 Visits the Big Apple

The Volkswagen XL1 arrived in New York City as the last stop of its month-long American tour that saw it in Los Angeles, Washington D.C., and finally the Big Apple. The XL1 is without question the most fuel-efficient production car in the world, with a European combined fuel consumption rating of 261 mpgUS. Maybe half that on the EPA given an estimated 310 mile range from its 2.64 gallons tank provides a 117.4 mpgUS result. As PHEV-31, the two-seater can cover up to 31 miles as an electric vehicle. With a usable 5.5 kWh pack and 150 Wh/mile, it looks more like a 36 mile range. That is if the pack spec is 5.5 kWh usable vs. maybe 4.5 kWh of the 5.5 kWh usable which equates to 30 miles of all-electric range.
