EU New Tire Labels Explained

The standardized tire label that will be introduced by the European Union in 2012 will inform you on 3 key tire performance attributes: fuel efficiency, wet grip performance and exterior rolling noise. A rolling tire deforms and dissipates energy. It is one of the 5 resistive forces acting on a vehicle. The energy lost in this way, is expressed as ?rolling resistance' and is measured by the amount of energy dissipated per unit of distance travelled and per unit of weight carried. Rolling resistance directly impacts fuel consumption and the environment. At lower rolling resistance, the tire dissipates less energy, contributing less to resistive forces and thereby reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emission.
