A bit about the device and the man who created it. 1913 Cadillac Touring Car with the Self Starter standard. Charles Franklin Kettering was an American inventor, engineer, businessman, and the holder of 140 patents. He founded the Dayton Engineering Laboratories Company (Delco), and was head of research for GM from 1920 to 1947. Among his most widely used automotive inventions were the electrical starting.
