Ford to use new straw based biomaterial beginning in 2010

According to Ford, environmentally friendly wheat straw exhibits better dimensional integrity than non-reinforced plastic and weighs up to 10 percent less than plastic reinforced with talc or glass. Working with academic researchers and supplier A. Schulman, Ford will be the first automaker to develop and use wheat straw-reinforced plastic in its vehicles. This world-first application, which is on the third-row storage bins of the 2010 Ford Flex, reduces petroleum usage and CO2 emissions by approximately 20,000 and 30,000 pounds per year respectively.
