While working more miles on the Prius PHEV yesterday, I saw an unusual car ahead of me and thought, WTH is that? I caught up to the driver at a stop light and it was a Mexican registered/plated BYD King PHEV. I moved around to its left and saw the charge door port and on the right, the gasoline port so it was a PHEV.

Anyone know of a good way to track PHEV "fuel" economy?

There's tons of apps out there to log gasoline and diesel fuel consumption, but only one that I can see in the Apple app store that claims it does PHEVs (ezEV), but it's got too few ratings to even register a visible rating.

I saw that Wayne had a post proclaiming the merits of keeping electricity and gas consumption numbers separate, but have any PHEV owners figure out a good way to keep tabs on their own consumption to keep score?

I have only owned traditional ICE vehicles, but recently rented an extended range BMW i3...

It's not a cheap car but it's about the same price as the equivalent diesel Outlander after the £5k ($7.5k) UK Govt grant which gives people a choice. If you want a 4WD and do loads of longer trips the diesel will probably be the sensible choice as the PHEV runs on a 2.0 gas engine when the battery is...

Over the next few weeks , I will take a serious look at buying a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV which has just arrived in Taiwan. The only other plug-in avalable is the BMW i3 (2 year waiting list). So if any one has any advice comments please let me know and it may prove helpful for when the US version arrives in 2015/16.

Given that the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has a Japan JC08 all electric range of 60km or 36m, I expect to get at least 50km with AC needed in Taiwan for the summer. My round trip commute is only 7m and with weekend short trips, I expect to get 70% EV annual use rate....

This is my ride for the night as I prep for the 2013 Chicago Auto Show Alternative Fuel and Electric Alt Fuel Rally early tomorrow morning. It seems likely that PHEVs will be a very large part of the market at some point as people get used to plugging in their cars. Many will still need at least one long range vehicle and until we have the EV quick charge infrastructure in place, PHEVs will be big.

It also seems to me that all of the PHEVs that are on the market or approaching release are existing HEVs with a bigger battery pack. Obviously, this is the cheapest and easiest way for the automakers to get a PHEV to market but it seems to me that this is an back-asswards approach to PHEV design.

Toyota says the PIP battery is 4.4 kWh Lithium-Ion (not sure the exact chemistry). Users say it takes 3 kWh per charge. That is 68% of full charge so it sounds like Toyota has program the thing to run from 84% to 16% or something like that.

Question: If I am cycling this battery 2x per day, living in the Boston area (not too hot or cold), how long is it reasonable to expect this battery to last? It needs to...
