I preface to say I do like my Rav4 PHV all things considered, it's great at doing city driving and swapping seamlessly for family vacations. However, when checking the OBD readouts, it seems like I need to put my foot pretty far down in order to load the engine to at least 80%, 1700 RPM. Which results in quite a lot of acceleration. Makes me need a bit more space in order to get an adequate pulse in, to the point I wonder whether it'd be worth draining a bit of the battery until I get the space and speed to run the engine longer.

When compared to the Prius, the engine is loaded at 85% or...

My wife, son and myself will be taking a road trip from MA to TN this weekend for a total of 920 miles each way. I'm making it a point to only fill up with ethanol free gas and I'm wondering how much my mpg will increase.

We're driving in her 08 Nissan Versa SL Hatchback with CVT. Normal highway without applying any hypermiling techniques is 35mpg.

How many mpg do you think I will gain? I know someone is dying to tell me ethanol has 90% the energy of gas so a gallon of E10 has 98% the energy of real gas, etc. I'm looking for some real world advice, not btu calculations!...

I think I roughly lose 20-25%, and nothing seems to make it get that much better, outside of getting an even better downhill run and raising trip avg that way. I can't tell the difference between PnG or just holding steady, at best it's like going from 52 to 54.
The average speed is like, 20 - 40 mph for the steepest segment, which really sucks, can't get any momentum going.

I was bored one day and started fiddling with some numbers on a spreadsheet, thinking about whether the Prius estimate of "about 50-70% speed = mpg" (40mph ~25mpg) acceleration target was applicable to anything else. I sometimes have to drive the family van around, which is fairly old and is EPA estimated for like 22 mpg on the highway. All I have for instrumentation is a Tach and a somewhat laggy i-MPG display, so I'm never entirely sure if I'm in that 70% load zone, couldn't find a BSFC chart so I'm not sure what kind of "optimal" MPG to expect either.
So with the sketchy assumption...
I just sold my old car and bought a new one, which is a Volkswagen up! with a 1.0 TSI flex-fuel (ethanol and gasoline) engine (3 cylinders, turbo and direct injection). By the way, I bought this car because it is advertised as the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid car in Brazil. This prompted me to come back here to see if I can learn something...
