2020 is the first year of the 20’s decade with several anniversaries to be celebrated. The first is a 20th anniversary of the introduction of the first massed produced hybrid vehicles to the American market. The Honda Insight and the Toyota Prius initiated a change to cleaner vehicles that continues today now with the focus of BEV and PHEV’s. The second anniversary is the 50th celebration of Earth Day, organized by our own William Proxmire on April 22, 1970.

A friendly reminder about the 57th D$W Meet coming up this Saturday Oct. 19th at the Greenfield Public Library from 10:30am to 1pm. Though the Meet will start around 10:30, members and friends generally start rolling into the parking lot around 9-9:30 to enjoy some catching up, showing off new rides, exchanging updates on summer activities and of course checking their tire tire pressures. As we celebrated Earth Day on Saturday with the Drive Electric Earth Day event, we had 52 attendees for the 54th Meet of Drive $mart Wisconsin. We had 9 Tesla's, 4 Volt's, 2 Leaf's, 2 Bolts, 1 BMW i3 and a Fiat 500e for the DEED event and numerous other PHEV's and hybrids from our D$W crew.

We split the Meet into talking about the 50 Tools for a Lifetime techniques as part of $mart Driving training and then followed with an open discussion of EV's. We were fortunate to have Tesla Software engineer Garlan Garner (in his beautiful white Tesla Model 3)...

Drive $mart Wisconsin will be hosting a National Drive Electric Week event on Saturday Sept 8th at the Greenfield Public Library from 10am to 2pm. A PHEV/EV panel discussion will be from 11am to 1pm in the library community room while displays and rides will be in the parking lot.

This event will offer displays and demo rides of PHEV/BEV vehicles as well as a PHEV/EV panel discussion on:
- fundamentals of PHEV/BEV vehicles including safety
- exploration of battery and charging technology and options
- financial/environmental advantages in ownership

Hot day but cool Meet with 28 members attending including 4 new members. We rolled in with a Tesla, iMiev, 3 Prime, 1 FEH, 1 Lexus 400h, a Volt, Camry Hybrid and 6 Prius and several conventional vehicles. We came from all over SE Wisconsin and Illinois including Bloomington, Burlington, Oconomowoc, Kansasville and Franksville.

Flashback…when we started MiHG/D$W back in early 2006, there were no electric vehicles available and only 6 hybrids out in the marketplace by only 3 manufacturers.. As the saying goes “We’ve come a long way” with 2017 being a record year for alternative fuel vehicles. In 2017, EV/PHEV sales were at just below 200,000 vehicles sold and up 25% from 2016; there are now 16 pure EV vehicles, 24 plug-in vehicles and 43 hybrid vehicles on the market and there are over 20 non-hybrid vehicles that achieved 40 mpg and over 100 vehicles that get over 30mpg...

As we watched the tragedy of hurricane Harvey, we also saw the blessing of people helping people. That reminded me of the blessing offered to strangers by the 10,000 residents of Gander Newfoundland and their unselfish hospitality to the 6,600 passengers/crew of the 39 planes forced to land in their town on Sept. 11th. A few updates as the spring of 2017 wears on.

I will be attending the Shell Eco-Marathon in Detroit between Thursday April 27th and Sunday April 30th, 2017. To get there, I will be first transporting a 2017 RAM 2500 HD with the 6.4L V8 between San Diego and Denver as it is needed out there for the Colorado and surrounding states based Journalists hands.

Does anyone want to go to the Detroit Auto Show? I will be leaving Sunday, January 8th from Chicago, staying overnight somewhere in the Detroit area and attending the main event on Monday January 9th.

James and I have been covering this show for the past few years and another one or two are surely welcome. I am not sure if I will have a 17 Prius Two, a 17 AWD RAV4 Hybrid, a 17 Mazda3 with a stick or something else but that is transportation between Chicago and Detroit.
