    The 2020 Hyundai Elantra, with its CVT achieved a rated level of efficiency that placed it at or near the top of the C-segment charts. With its standard Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA), it moved the bar for the few OEMs left to follow its lead.

    The Elantra SE, SEL, Value Edition and Limited include the 147 hp, atkinsonized 2.0L I4 mated to the all-new CVT. The efficiency improvement looks like this:

    SE w/ the CVT: 35 mpg combined (+2 over 2019)
    SEL, Value Edition, and Limited w/ the CVT: 34 mpg combined (+2 over 2019)

    Hyundai’s new for 2020 CVT with a chain belt provided improved efficiency. It utilizes a wide ratio pulley system, which provides a broader ratio of operation that improves fuel economy with taller ratios and improved performance with lower ones.

    Hyundai SmartSense Safety

    The 2020 Elantra lineup included the following standard advanced safety features.

    Very nice. While I'm old enough to distrust any automatic transmission ( long-term- reliability ) ,
    I admit that modern automatics are considerably more efficient than a manual. After driving
    my manual 2014 Civic for seven months , I miss the 5AT in my 2008 Civic. I know, a 10th-gen Civic
    with 1.5T and 6MT would be fairly efficient. I was too cheap to buy that. The 2014 drives well ,
    and is like-new condition at 86K miles. I will probably keep it a while.

    Hi Edwin:

    My one and only one question regarding the 6th and now 7th gen Elantra is the CVTs reliability. From our experience with the DCT in the ECO - that is not going to be on my consider list any more, to any number of other OEMs that have gone down the belt and cone CVT route with miserable results (Nissan, Ford, Honda ...), there is a risk. A big one at that. I would still love to pick up a 20 Ioniq SEL or 21 Elantra Hybrid Limited for a long term test drive but I suspect the Hybrids DCT will reveal the same flaws that the 7-speed DCT did in the ECO. Those dry clutches are wear items and with no ability to replace them or replace them inexpensively, they scare me to death.

    Hyundai's CVT is a whole new item and maybe they have the long term reliability figured out? The Corolla's CVT seems to be holding up well and I am sure Hyundai tore into that design and build quality years ago to figure out where they could improve upon past OEMs CVT missteps.

    My fingers are crossed that the 2020 Hyundai Elantra Value Edition with the kind of discounts available here in Southern California is worth consideration. The rest of the platform was pretty damn solid as our 156k Long term drive found no other shortcomings outside the DCT.

    For the last 15(+?) years, people often argued that automatic transmissions had become more efficient than manuals. As for our 2013 auto & 2016 manual Elantras(both the same Series & with 80-85,000+miles), the efficiency award must go to our 2016 manual. PLUS, the 2016 manual is lower geared (other brands too?) for superior acceleration versus the 2013 automatic. The manual 2016 Elantra is wondrous on steep, high elevation mountain roads & passes, the low 131lbs-ft. of torque never being insufficient, if this driver is paying attention to conditions & selecting the proper gears for the slopes(no over-revving necessary). Personally, I can’t speak about the newest automatics. But, our 2016 manual(specially at less than very high ticket-possible freeway speeds) is of such greater efficiency than our 2013 auto Elantra, that I can’t believe that increasingly rare recent manuals of any brand, still aren’t on a par or superior to automatics.

    & my determination is not based on disappointment with our 2013 automatic efficiency, which has delivered YEARLY OVERALL MPG as high as 39 & tankfuls as high as 45 MPG. BUT, OUR MANUAL 2016 IS BETTER.

    PS…..One reason new car auto dealers are leery of ordering too many manual cars, is the possible many days (months?) the manuals will be on the dealer lots. As for our 2016 manual Elantra, I bought the car as soon as I test drove it, AND AFTER WATCHING the car being off-loaded from the semI-truck trailer.

    It appears that Hyundai did solve the problems other manufacturers had with the CVT. Consumer Reports indicate that both minor & major problems with the 2020 Elantra CVT were minimal, rating much better than average. ​

    That only means there weren't many initial problems. Now is much too early to have a clue whether long-term durability will be reasonable.

    But, better an initial much better than average start than data showing something worse. Maybe, the April 2022 Consumer Reports (is April still the vehicle issue?) will have extra data. It does appear that the best manufacturers were needed to make reliable CVTs (oh, just like other new technologies).
    I had a CVT that was NOT considered good. But, it performed well for me, & I loved it. I think a lot of new technologies that have problematic beginnings, are pushed too roughly by owners who treat new technology as if it should be bullet proof. It is obvious that on average, rough owners will NOT have equipment that is as reliable & durable as people who treat equipment as if it is breakable…….which equipment is. Then, rough owners bellyache about their equipment failing, hoping warranties will repair equipment that they abused.

    As far as new technology EV battery packs go, the very same thing is easily seen as rough owners drive battery packs into the ground & then expect company warranties to repair their packs, that the rough owners abused.

    I have come to really appreciate the CVT ( not the e-CVT like in my Prius ).

    I only wonder if anyone (OEM ) has produced aa CVT with stop/start.
    I would buy a car like that. My girlfriend's 2020 Fit has one , and it's super-efficient.

    I say let's see how it works at 10 yrs/150K miles , and see how much maintenance/repair it needs.

    The Nissan CVT in my 2007 Dodge Caliber ran excellently to 53,000 miles when I traded it in for an Elantra in 2013. After that, I met several Dodge Caliber owners, who had 150K to 180K miles on them, saying they had nothing wrong with their CVTs.

    Ah, I forgot this thread. I do have the April 2022 Consumer Reports issue. The 2020 Hyundai Elantra transmission continues at well above average reliability. The 2021 also is much above average in reliability.
    I still stand by my premise that some new tech gets treated as bullet-proof by rough drivers, leading to bad new tech reputations, that aren’t easily erased, despite years of good functioning for careful drivers.
    I do note in the 2022 Consumer Reports, that the CVT initially used in the 2015 Honda Fit, was terrible, for both major & minor problems. But later years, the transmission progressively became better than average & then, much better than average.
