Toyota’s Prius Prime ascends to new heights. Wayne Gerdes – CleanMPG – May 2, 2017 2017 Toyota Prius Prime PHEV-25 - $27,985 to start including the $885 D&H charge while offering 25 miles of all-electric range, a 55/53 mpgUS city/highway rating as a standard hybrid and a world beating 133 MPGe rating in blended Electric and Hybrid Electric mode. I posted this highlight in the 2017 Toyota Prius Prime Wins 2017 World Green Car Award coverage and it is worth posting again. Covering the first drive at the short lead, 2017 Toyota Prius Prime: Price + Content + Efficiency = WOW!!!, the $1,000 Toyota rebate on top of the stunning price makes the Prime extremely enticing. Prime owners are eligible for a $4,500 Fed Tax Credit and numerous state incentives including $1,500 state tax rebate in California, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. This brings it down to $21,985 for those that qualify. There is also $1k on the hood from Toyota and you should be able to knock off another $600 to $800 off from the dealer. The 2017 Toyota Prius Prime with the standard Safety Sense-P, P stands for Pedestrian detection, Radar CC, and FCW/Auto Braking should be able to be purchased for just $20,300 USD +TTL? Oh, and it outsold all Electrics in April for the very first time. Including the much desired 2017 Chevrolet Volt! Toyota April 2017 Sales Overview Toyota reported it sold 201,926 vehicles in April, down 4.4 percent below the 211,126 sold in April of 2017. On a Daily Selling Rate (DSR) basis, sales were down a slight 0.7 percent. YTD sales of 734,537 were down 5.9 percent from the 780,206 sold through the same period of 2016. YTD sales on a DSR basis was down 4.9 percent. Toyota on its own achieved April 2017 sales of 179,810 vehicles, down 3.5 percent from the 186,244 sold in April of 2016. YTD sales of 650,576 was down 4.5 percent from the 681,103 sold through the same period of 2016. On a DSR basis, April and YTD sales were up 0.3 percent and down 3.5 percent respectively. Lexus had a tougher April with sales of 22,116 vehicles, down 11.1 percent from the 24,882 sold in April of 2016. YTD sales of 83,961 were down a steep 15.3 percent from the 99,103 sold through the same period of 2016. On a DSR basis, April and YTD sales were off 7.7 and 14.4 percent respectively. The rarely spoken about Yaris achieved April sales of 5,001 vehicles, up 14.0 percent over the 4,388 sold in April of 2016. YTD sales of 17,600 is up 21.5 percent over the 14,480 sold through the same period of 2016. Both results are standard volume basis reporting. Another highlight was the Highlander with April sales of 17,981 vehicles, up 19.6 percent over the 15,037 sold in April of 2016. YTD sales of 64,623 is up an even more impressive 20.3 percent over the 53,710 sold through the same period of 2016. Both results are volume basis calculations. The RAV4 was the real Toyota highlight with April sales of 31,757, up 5.3 percent over the 30,152 sold in April of 2016. YTD sales of 112,290 was up 5.7 percent over the 106,274 sold through the same period of 2016. Both April and YTD sales are calculated on a volume only basis. The U.S. Automobile April 2017 vs. April 2016 Market Share results. It was a tough month for GM in terms of their profit center(s) with the Silverado, Sierra, Colorado, and Canyon being outsold by the F-Series. Notice the RAM. For the second month in a row it outsold the Silverado. The Accord broke back into the Top 10 with the Altima falling off. Notice the highly regarded 2017 Toyota Prius Prime outsold the Volt for the first time and took the top spot in the electric segment. 2017 Toyota Prius Prime Kia’s Niro achieved sales of 2,939 sold and its sales volume is still climbing with another 235 units added from last month’s 2,704 sold. U.S. Automobile April 2017 sales were off 4.0 percent on a volume basis (1.44 million vs 1.50 million) but just 0.7 percent on a DSR Daily Selling Rate basis. 26 selling days in April of 2017 vs 27 in April of 2016. The industry is beginning to slow. How long the OEMs will be able to maintain profit margins with mildly sinking sales remains to be seen. Ford's weak quarter announced last week may be just the start of a longer term decline for the industry. There will still be profits but lower financial results on lower volumes are probably in the cards for the U.S. market over the short to intermediate term.
I think the $2500 from Toyota and deep discounts from car dealers helped push the sales record last month for the Prius Prime. Some web ads are now showing $1000 from Toyota, but plugging in my ZIP code (Massachusetts) at buyatoyota, I still see $2500 through end of May. Get 'em while they're hot.
