Road Trip for battery?

    Yes the GC is designed to use the pack's fan to cool or warm up the pack when charging and/or discharging.
    That is a good point about creating a baseline. The GC retains the info on the last two discharge cycles. I'll take a look and make a note of where things were so as to compare the next time I discharge it. I think I was so desparate to start using it to recondition my pack, that I didn't think to take notes on where things were. I initially put it through a 3 cycle discharge and then 1 cycle each night for 5 days. Then gave it another 3 cycle discharge. Since, I've been charging it up each night to be ready for the morning.

    A few things...

    First, since you are going to be charging it daily, I would encourage you to use run Mode #2, instead of Run mode #1.

    That would at least make it a bit easier on the pack since it charges at a slower rate throughout the entire charge. Only go back to Run mode 1 if you don't have time to charger at the slower rate.

    Second, it sounds to me like, although you did the initial three cycles, you never actually put it through a long soak cycle. I would encourage you to do that at least one time. It can make a big difference.

    Lastly, you have two banks where data can be stored. You could leave the original data where it is now probably bank 0, and then save all future data in bank 1. Each bank saves 3 cycles of data.

    Thanks Eric. I'm actually running it in Mode 3 so that it finishes charging just before I leave in the morning. However, based on your recommendation, I should be using Mode 4. I'll need to test how long it takes as it takes about 6 hours to complete currently.

    You're right, I have not used the soak feature. I read that it can take a few days to complete, so until i have taken some time off from work, I'll have to wait. That is something that I would like to do though.

    You're welcome, glad to help.

    You are right about run modes. Was thinking about the Insight, not Civic.

    You can change the soak charge time setting, but for sure for the first time I would leave it at the default. Plan for a full day on the charger.

    I would be curious to hear what your discharge and charge times are currently. It should be stored in your charger data.

    Eric, I gave the HV pack a Run Mode 6 with Soak this past weekend. It began around 6pm on Thursday evening and finished around 7am Sunday morning. I put the charge/discharge info from the GC into a spreadsheet. The info is interesting, but I have nothing to compare it to. Would you be able to speak to it if I were to send you a copy? I wish I had the initial information when I first used the GC, but I somehow managed to delete it, so it's not available to use as a baseline.

    Eric was nice enough to take a look at the data on the spreadsheet and give me some experienced feedback on how good of condition it is in. Overall the pack is good except he pointed out that it was only discharging down to 155V - 150V instead of the 143V that the charger is set up for. He suggested to use the Tech Edit function of the GC to allow both the GC and discharger to take the pack's voltage down to 132V. Hopefully, this has brought back some lost capacity. I haven't run another 3 cycle discharge yet to compare with the previous cycles, but it does seem to hang around the 6 bar SoC charge longer than before.

    I updated the spreadsheet with the details of the deep discharge.

    It seems that the HV pack cannot go more than 2 days without doing a recal. I performed one discharge cycle last night and it was able to go down as far as 152.3V instead of 142V. So I decided to run another deep discharge cycle, but only allow it to go as low as the 142V. I read on Mike Dabrowski's site that he recently did 2 or 3 deep discharge cycles to a friend's HV pack before it was balanced, so I thought it would help to do additional deep discharges. The deep cycle that I did today brought the pack down to 141.8V. Now I'm running another regular discharge cycle to see if it will go down closer to 142V than 150V.

    Be sure to do at least one long soak charge sometime.
    You'll have to turn that option on. It resets itself every time you turn off the charger.

    So the pack only went down as far as 154.3V on the discharge cycle after the deep discharge. I'm beginning to think that this is about as good as its going to get. As long as I plug it in every other night it performs great. I wish I had documented where it was at when I first used the GC though. I'm sure it's much, much better than where it was before.

    Jess, could you enlarge a bit on what are good and bad numbers, what the process is doing, and so on?

    (I'm still interested, but have my sights on a trip to Seattle soon, LOL.)

    Eric can probably speak to the numbers better than I can. I sent him a spreadsheet of the initial data and asked if he can tell me how healthy my pack was since I had no frame of reference with which to compare it. The numbers are mainly informational, but Eric pointed out a couple to focus on. The two big ones are the mAH (miliamp hours) and the SDV (stop discharge voltage). Eric confirmed that new "sticks" are 6500 miliamps and the initial data showed mine at around 5000 which is good. However, as you can see it seemed to drop around 3500. I don't know if the larger reading was caused by the extra Soak charge that was used? Concerning the stop discharge voltage, the GC is set to take the pack down to a voltage level of 142V, but mine never seems to go below 150 - 155v. Eric says that it's not that bad, but I can't help look at it and think that it's 10v of capacity lost. I tried another deep discharge which forces the pack to a lower voltage, hoping that it will free up some capacity, but, so far, that hasn't happened.

    As I've stated before the GC has really brought my HV pack back to life. I'm sure that 1 year of having 2 - 4 recals everyday has done quite a number on it and it's either going to take more time to get it back into shape or I will be using the GC at least every other day for the rest of the time I have the car. Overall I'm happy with my purchase. My mileage is way back up and I really like driving my car again.

    I'm thinking even if you do go for a replacement pack the GC, and your experience with it, will serve you well with the new one.

    With any luck you won't have to go that route.

    Meantime, I want one, I want one. I'm working on my son, theoretically the car's owner now. He keeps getting sensible on me, insisting on holding off as long as it's under warranty. OTOH, he "explained" Honda's code to me, basically how it will not turn on any lights until the warranty's run out, LOL.

    If you have to grid charge your battery every day, then it is truly on life support.
    Basically it's like hitting an elderly person with a defibrillator every day just to keep them alive. Not a preferable situation.

    Personally I would not want to continue on that way for a long period of time. I'd be concerned that there are a few super-weak cells that are getting too hot when charging and possibly risking venting or in the worst case scenario, a fire.

    At some time it may be worth tracking down the bad actors and replacing them with something a little less worn out. I'm not saying new, but at least better than what you've got.

    The grid chargers are going to stopped being produced in the very near future.
    As in, there are less than 20 of them left.

    The creator of the charger wants to move on to other projects.
    There is an outside chance that someone will take over for him, but I wouldn't count on it.
    He has created other great products in the past, and then stopped producing them forever.

    So if you ever want to buy one of his grid chargers, now is the time.
