Poster: xcel (see this users gallery) WASHINGTON -- The outgoing head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said automakers were unlikely to win a reduction in a proposal to hike fuel efficiency standards by 4.5 percent annually between the 2011 and 2015 model years. The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, the trade association for Detroit's Big Three automakers and Toyota and others, sharply criticized NHTSA's proposal issued in April. In urging the agency to scale it back, they argue it is too aggressive, costs too much and will cut auto sales by up to 800,000 vehicles a year.
