Chevy's Malibu sedan and Malibu Maxx wagon/hatch, built on exactly the same Epsilon vehicle architecture as the Vectra, debuted in the U.S. barely a year later. It was hard to believe it had been produced in the same decade as the Vectra, let alone by the same automaker.
Slab-sided, clunky, and with fussy detailing, the Malibu looked like it had been designed by a committee - which it wasn't far from the truth, as the car's sheet metal was reportedly constantly tweaked in response to endless customer clinics. The Malibu Maxx featured a roomy, versatile interior, but it was awash with acres of cheap, drab, grey plastics.
