Remember when gasoline was < $0.20 per gallon?

Poster: xcel (see this users gallery) First State gas taxes went into effect this week in 1919 just this week. $0.187 per gallon was expensive back in the teens and twenties almost 100 years ago! I saw a < $0.20 per gallon sign on an episode of the Walton’s about 40 years ago and the lowest I ever saw personally was $0.249 while on a vacation trip to sunny Florida back in the late 60’s. As automobiles became more popular in the early part of the 20th century, the demand grew for more and better paved roads. Paying for these soon became a problem for government at all levels, a problem which has become an annual budget ordeal across the nation.
