Gas a Record $3.30 Nationally

High oil prices are also hurting airlines. Aloha Airlines shut down and ATA Airlines filed for bankruptcy protection in recent weeks, citing high fuel prices as a cause of their failures.

John Wilen - AP - April 4, 2008

I really want to find the guys 2-3 years ago screaming they didn't care if it's $10 a gallon and see how invincible they are now. -- Ed.

Retail gas prices surged to a new record above $3.30 a gallon Friday and appear poised to rise further in coming weeks as gasoline supplies tighten.

Oil prices, meanwhile, supported the gas price rally by jumping more than $1 a barrel after a dismal employment report sent the dollar lower.

At the pump, gas prices rose 1.4 cents overnight to a national average of $3.303 a gallon, according to AAA and the Oil Price Information Service. That's the latest in a series of records, and about 60 cents higher than a year ago…[Read More]

If I didn't buy my HX, I'd be suffering lots with $60 + weekly gas tanks! I'm ready for $4 gas!

Re: Gas a Record $3.30 Nationally

I'll ditto what 99HXCivic's saying. With $4 a gas I'd be looking at $70 fillups weekly with my old Buick. I'm not going to say I'm ready for $4 a gas, but I'm doing damage limitation to whatever end I can. I don't make any more un-necessary trips, I combine if possible, and of course...drive really really slow.

Maybe if gas prices go high enough all these people who are hauling ass will slow down or at least consider what they're doing to their own fuel economy.

The inherent cost increase of food is what scares me... What I save on fuel is spent on higher food prices.

Re: Gas a Record $3.30 Nationally

The Valero in Bordentown, NJ, $2.999 today (cash price). It was $3.059 on the NJ Tpk. Outside of Baltimore, it is around 3.299 (some a little higher, some a little less). But I have some good news, I just saved a bundle on my last tank. Actually, I got 46.6 MPG showing on the SG2 for the last 150 miles (overall tank at 43.5). For me, those are big numbers. I never thought I'd see 45, and when I did, I got even more greedy. I FASed down the bowels of the Ft. McHenry Tunnel!!! And lost most of what I'd gained climbing back out without becoming part of a truck bumper. But not everything is going up. My mortgage went up, my taxes went way up. My electric bill jumped 72% for good. My water bill rates went up. But, and you're gonna appreciate this one, my salary has not gone up. Booooo.

I always kind of sneer at these news items as our local pricing is pretty much the same as it is in California, which is consistently much higher than the national average. I fueled up on Wednesday and paid my highest amount per gallon yet: $3.58.

I'm glad I have the Insight now but I still have to contend with the Escape.

My next fill in the Elantra is bound cost me a bundle as well because when I stuff it the tank usually takes around 16g.
