Feb. 08 Hybrid and fuel efficient non-hybrid sales – Non-hybrids take-off!

Yaris and Fit sales doing extremely well with $3.00 per across the country.

Wayne Gerdes - CleanMPG - Mar. 3, 2008

The Yaris was just selected as one of the worst vehicles you can purchase (most here do not agree with that assessment) according to Consumer Reports latest Vehicle Issue yet the Yaris’ February month over month sales was the largest on a percentage basis of all the vehicles we track!

The 2008 Toyota Yaris – The most affordable passenger car in Toyota’s lineup brings a high level of fun-to-drive experience to the entry subcompact segment. Along with a low initial cost, impressive fuel economy (08 EPA FE ratings of 29 MPG city/36 MPG highway for MT and 29/35 for the automatic) and Ultra-Low Emissions rating, it is one of the cleanest and lowest cost of ownership vehicles available in North America.

Hybrid’s

Hybrids are continuing to increase overall market share with the Big 6 Hybrids showing an overall 7.6% increase year over year thanks mostly to the Prius-II’s last month sales and TCH 08 total yearly sales. The Big 4 fuel efficient non-hybrids had an overall sales increase of 3.2% although Corolla sales have fallen hard for the second month in a row. With gasoline prices at $3.00 and climbing in all areas of the country, the hybrids should easily hold their own.

The Toyota Prius posted February sales of 10,893, a fall of 14.5% from February of 2007. 200,000 in total 08 sales may still be in the cards but it is going to be close.

The Toyota Camry Hybrid achieved sales of 4,121 units, up 18.7% vs. the February 2007 sales period.

The FEH/MMH twins' performance showed an increase in totals of 1,743 units vs. 1,696, but a slight decrease of 1.3% on a sales per day basis.

The HiHy sold 1,938 units, down 1.7% for the February 2008 vs. February 2007 comparison period. More units were sold but with only one more sale per day, a negative for the comparison was recorded. The Lexus RX 400h hybrid (HiHy’s sister vehicle) reported sales of 1,148 units for the month, down 11.8% vs. the year ago sales period.

The Honda Civic Hybrid saw total sales of 1,808 sold, down 9.8% compared to the February 2007 sales period.

Fuel Efficient Non-Hybrids

The sales leader in the fuel-efficient non-hybrid compact segment is the Honda Civic. Total sales of 23,799 show an increase of 14.0% over the same February sales period a year ago.

The Corolla is really losing steam fast, having relinquished its sales lead with only 21,202 units sold for the month of February, a sharp decrease of 28.1% vs. the year-ago period.

The Toyota Yaris subcompact was a standout with 9,758 units sold, an accelerating increase of 64.3% vs. the same period a year ago.

The Honda Fit’s total February sales of 4,326 vehicles also proved to be a stunning success with an increase of 61.8% over February of 2007.

MINI Cooper sales for February were up 38.4% to 3,415 cars compared to 2,368 cars sold during the same period a year ago.

DSR*: Daily Selling Rate - There were 25 selling days for the February 2008 sales period vs. 24 in 2007.

In Canada, Toyota Hybrid and fuel efficient Non-Hybrid automobile sales were highlighted yet again by the Yaris selling 1,516 units, up 57.5% versus the same month in 2007. The all-new 10th generation Corolla saw 2,824 new owners, up 29.1% from the year earlier period.

For the second month in a row, the Toyota Camry Hybrid outsold the Prius at 402 vs. 198 units and was up an astonishing 65.4% compared to the February 2007 sales period. The Prius saw an increase of 15.1% year-over-year with 198 units sold. The HiHy saw 108 models sold, up 41.6% compared to February 2007 sales period.

Big 5 Overall

Chrysler sales fell 14.0%, GM sales were down 12.9%, Ford sales were off by 6.9% and Toyota saw a decrease of 3%. Honda on the other hand saw an increase of 5% overall, breaking the rest of the industry's downward sales trend.

Of note again, the recently redesigned Accord is having trouble with another disappointing sales decline of 12.7% from the year ago period.

Smart ForTwo sales figures have yet to be released.

Re: February 08 Hybrid and fuel efficient non-hybrid sales – Non-hybrids take-off!

Still had a small tax credit this time last year.

Some waiting to see what the 2009 (& even 2010?) will bring.

General decline in the economy hurting all car sales.

???

Just some possibles

Maybe a cause/effect with the similar rise in TCH sales?

Re: February 08 Hybrid and fuel efficient non-hybrid sales – Non-hybrids take-off!

Yeah, CR is hanging out near the tailpipe too much:
Quote:
Highs: Front access, turning circle, hatchback versatility
Lows: Acceleration, handling, vague shifter
The Yaris is the smallest and least expensive car Toyota sells in the United States. It actually ranks at the top of the list in both reliability and low cost of ownership, but those factors are not included in Consumer Reports' basic vehicle score.
Right, because why would an economy car be scored on econmomy - we need to score it on PERFORMANCE!

Re: February 08 Hybrid and fuel efficient non-hybrid sales – Non-hybrids take-off!

Oddly enough CR also noted the Yaris was one of the cheapest cars to own over the first 5 year period taking into account purchase price, depreciation, repairs, insurance, etc. . .

Re: February 08 Hybrid and fuel efficient non-hybrid sales – Non-hybrids take-off!

I have owned my 2007 Yaris for 17 months, and it has a bit too much power, if you like to get excellent mileage. My handling at 44 lbs pressure in the tires is very good. I have no shifter problems, I like my 5 speed manual. No problems, great mileage, inexpensive to own. Love it!
Happy with my decision to purchase it.
